He definitely said Tomlinson, and that the adelaide clubs were keen on him. I guess we can forget that for now as he signed in October.

True but all their talented kids like bontempelli, libba, macrae will be looking at boyds contract and thinking it's only fair if I get a massive increase in dollars.

That's the trouble with overpaying for potential.
There are no examples of this. Its the opposite.

Players are not dumb. They realise the realities of the market. You need to pay overs to attract talent.

You think Tex is upset about our offering to JC? Or do you think he realises that we would need to pay more to lure him over and that he makes the team better? Do you think that if we signed JC for over 1 million a year - Dangerfield & Sloane would demand more money or would they be content to take a little hit to accommodate him in order to make our team a contender?

Absolute Rubbish. You develop a strong and successful club both on and off the field and they will come.

Hawthorn acquired their talented listed through low draft picks from there, they built their success. That success attracted top shelf talent in Lake, Gibson an Frawley. These three players in particular are paid no way near their market value. Geelong is the same as the Hawks, they have a hierarchal system in play to pay their players, their top end talent is paid no way near what they are worth.

Paying overs continually will eventually destroy a list and a Club.

Of course there is. Bontempelli has already asked to renegotiate his contract.

JC is different he has proven himself and everybody can see the player he will become. Even say Gunston when he left or Aish now no problem with paying overs they have shown enough class. I agree players would have no problem with paying extra to get these guys.

Boyd is yet to get a kick at afl level he could be the most expensive flop of all time. Bontempelli, macrae and libba have shown they are up and coming stars of the future and this guy that can't get a kick is getting 4x what they do? I think it will end in tears.

Interesting.

It might sound like semantics - but what you are arguing isn't the point of whether its a good idea to overspend on potential - its whether Boyd has shown enough potential to justify being overpaid.

Jeremy Cameron has had one good season. You don't pay him 1.2 million based on that. We would be paying massive overs on him based on his potential. Aish had a pretty decent first season - nothing spectacular. Once again paying him what we will need to pay him is paying him on potential.

You said yourself that Gunston showed enough when he left to justify being overpaid. He was 20 had played 14 games and kicked 20 goals. Boyd is 19 has played 9 games and kicked 8 goals, despite being an actual KPF (which take more time to develop).

If we got Aish we would have no problems within the group about paying him overs. Same goes for Boyd. He is a 19year old 200cm beast who was the highest rated junior footballer in the country. Its a risk, but a very good calculated risk.

I guess your right. I would argue Boyd hasn't shown anything at afl level to suggest he has star potential (fair enough maybe he has had 1 year and is a true KP). The dogs are going out on a limb with that size contract. Plenty of dominant big juniors that don't make it!

I think there is a big difference between Boyd getting that contract and a JC getting that contract.

Boyd didnt just get his contract based on his potential. He got it because also this is what it takes for a player to defect to cellar dweller like the Bulldogs.

Its bloody risky, he could end up being a Chris Dawes and never amount to anything.

Can't argue with any of that. I think they would have preferred to give JC that contract.

I think they wanted to give it to Jonno Patton and it was all locked in. When that fell through they went for the next best thing in Boyd.

Will put my house on it (someone else's house ) that Boyd will not be a flop, in fact I think the bulldogs will win that trade by a mile after griffen has 3 good years and Boyd is still around in 2024

What if he amounts to a solid Casbault/Dawes type. The trade is fair enough and well done to the dogs for pulling it off. It's the $1 million a season that troubles me - he could be the next Jon butcher. I would have liked another year or 2 exposed form when you are committing that money.

In 3 years time, that $1,000,000 will look like chicken feed.

The salary cap will increase by 60 to 70% over the next 5 years. Even if he turns out to be a 40 to 45 goal forward, in 3 years time - the doggies will still be a massive winner in that deal.

Don't think so mate. He will have to be a top 10 forward at minimum to justify that money. If he is the next Liam Jones they are in trouble.
