Analysis Post game Pies vs Lions

Apparently the official AFL interchange steward doesn't count Qtr time changes but Champion data does.

Really?

Shouldn't the stat follow what the rules say?

If the interchange cap rule does / doesn't include interchanges between the quarters, then the counted stat should / shouldn't count them as well?

It has elements of 2010/2011 in the sense that it's all about pressuring and tackling the ball carrier. No question.

The difference relatively speaking is the 2010/2011 version was all about pressing up, keeping the ball in the front half and overwhelming and scaring the opposition into mistakes in our half to create scoreboard opportunities. This years version is more a reckless, less organised charge at the guy with the ball and do this all over the field in the hope of generating a turnover. Ultimately we need to add an element of polish and chemistry to what we're looking to do, and that's something badly lacking for the current gameplan, but with coaching of situational positioning and a better understanding by the players of where they need to be, when, it can potentially be a gameplan that can work well for this group. So from here it's about the execution of the gameplan and getting the players not only to buy in but also have all the players learn and master the system.

Well hopefully Chemistry and Polish come the more the team plays together

Yes, I was really pleasantly surprised, just wish he had been more truthful when he left.

I missed it;( What did he say?

Still have a pit in my stomach everytime i see him. I know it will go away with time. Feel like a jilted lover at the moment;) How could he leave me? I was the best!;)

Finally got to watch the replay of the game. Just a few thoughts:

As mostly happens in footy, it came down to Effort. For most of the first 3 quarter we just had more effort. Defensively are guys were just applying so much more pressure and there was always an extra man running to the contest, which means we were able to get those contested possessions out to our man, and offensively the guys were running and creating space for each other.

That was the difference for the first 3 quarters, and it was every guy on the park needing to be part of it. And it made the difference to every other part of our game.

I don't think our disposal was particularly good, nor was our goalkicking... in fact, as Bucks' said, put through of couple of extra kicks at key times and the Lions wouldn't have had a sniff at the end.

Our decision making going forward looked much better, but how much of that was because of just having more guys presenting and creating space for each other? (and then with more guys sticking their marks, and getting on the scoreboard, it makes it much easier for the inside-50's to not be Cloke centric).

Obviously everyone was gassed by 3QT, and it then took a bit effort to pick it up again for the last 10 minutes or so... and it really went back to the basics of guys just getting back and getting to the contest.

Also:

Grundy - was clearly the best ruckman on the field for the first half (not sure how much we could've said that last year) and did so basically rucking full time... and he did well to keep providing a contest throughout the game, but was clearly gassed after 3 quarters, the issue is still going to be what decision we make with the Ruck spots going forward. Personally I think that once Witts is match fit, we should really try to play both of them together.

White - pretty much at the level we want him to be playing, and he can be a useful member of our 22. Kept presenting well in the forward line and up the wings, took his marks, kicked a couple of goals, and worked really well with the rest of the forward line.

Swan - I think he did pretty well and think people have been a bit harsh on him post game. Provided pressure and kept getting to contests. Made some poor decisions going forward but at least he was getting to the ball regularly... I think he still has the quality to be in of the first selected each week, he just needs to realise that there are now some limitations in his game and he will have to adjust how he plays.

Agree - Playing both Witts and Grundy together is the Best Solution and Grundy said that is what Both want to do

I think that you can watch it on the Footy Show web site but it was very good.

In tight finishes like tonight and when you are knackered, if you keep moving the ball forward (which he did), that to me is a plus.
In fact tonight I thought he really stood up and played a ver team orientated game, always looked at option.
I can see him being a big part of anything we do this year.
Showed real leadership.

Exactly! Anybody that has ever played footy knows that the aim of the game in the wet is to force the ball forward at all costs, which is what Swanny did time and time again :-)

Great to see his running patterns getting back towards where they were when he was at his best, also looks like he has gotten that burst back that we missed so much last year...can't see anything but positives in his performance considering the conditions and the fact he's coming off surgery and had a limited pre season!

Really? I thought the new limit was 120?

Yeah you've got your standard 120 and then 3 at each of the quarter breaks. It largely comes down to how you want to count them CD counts all AFL just the in match ones.

Swanny's gonna be fine...just needs a few matches to get his touch back...had to give myself an uppercut...I thought he was average but then saw he got the ball 30 or so times...Come ANZAC day and he'll be on fire..

Plus one for the sub so 130 overall. This accounts for the diff between the Afl and CD numbers 112 vs 122

I was away for the weekend and just watched the replay.

It was a pretty messy game in tough conditions with more fumbling than you would normally see.

Players that stood out to me were Sidebottom, Langdon, Toovey, Pendles and Adams.

Cloke tried hard and looks close to some good form. Swanny also got himself where the ball is but just kicked quite badly.

The umpiring was quite terrible and the Lions got several goals from shocking decisions late in the game.

Had to laugh when a journo asked Leppo at his presser (paraphrasing here) whether his AFL best midfield has been drinking their own bath water and believed their own hype. Hilarious
How did Leppa reply?
