Great team.

I doubt that anybody else will do one...

FINAL TEAM:
B: D Morris, M Scarlett, R Hayden
HB: C Newman, T Croad, M Mattner
C: M Priddis, B Kirk (vc), C Bateman
HF: R O'Keefe, M Pavlich (c), B Gibbs
F: M Campbell, D Bradshaw, Al Davey
R: A Sandilands, L Power, M Boyd
I/C: D Petrie, D Cassisi, T Johnstone, X Ellis

PICKS:
#6 - Matthew Scarlett:
With my first pick I opted to pick in my opinion, the best full back of the competition. As a general rule, I started to pick my spine first, as good midfielders are easier to come by than good backs/forwards.

#9 - Matthew Pavlich:
I was very surprised that Pavlich was still available at pick #9. One of the best forwards in the competition and also one of the most inspirational captains.

#20 - Daniel Bradshaw:
In hindsight I probably took Bradshaw a bit too high (Lloyd #58, Hall #66), but at the time I was pleased to have my CHF and FF set in stone.

#23 - Aaron Sandilands:
With Cox already taken, I wanted to ensure that I wasn't lagging behind in the ruck stocks, and took Sandilands at #23. With Petrie able to ruck while Sandilands is off the ground, this duo is one of the best in the competition.

#34 - Trent Croad:
Probably took Croad too high (Lake #43, Hudghton #55, McPharlin #57, Fletcher #60), but I have always been a fan. Finished my spine which I was very pleased with.

#37 - Brett Kirk:
The first midfielder I took and a mini-steal at pick #37. Tough as nails in and under player, underrated in my opinion.

#48 - Chance Bateman:
After taking Kirk with #37, I wanted an outside midfielder, and Bateman is just about the best in the competition at that. Had a somewhat breakout year and was an important part in a premiership midfield.

#51 - Luke Power:
Was tossing up between Power and Sewell for this pick. Ummed and ahhed for a while, then decided on Power. Sewell ended up being picked at #52, so it was clearly a tough call.

#62 - Dale Morris:
All-Australian back pocket this year and one of the premium backmen in the competition. Can play on smalls or talls and gives a lot of versatility to my backline.

#65 - Ryan O'Keefe:
Was fairly surprised that O'Keefe was still available at #65, but I guess these kind of players slip. Wanted Robert Murphy for my other forward flank, but didn't eventuate.

#76 - Drew Petrie:
Steal. Petrie is underrated. Can play back, forward or in the ruck, and once again gives my team a lot of versatility. More than handy back-up ruck for Sandilands.

#79 - Marty Mattner:
Probably should have taken another midfielder here, rather than a back flank, but still, Mattner's a fine player. Was very pleased with my backline of Scarlett, Croad, Morris and Mattner, with Petrie floating in when necessary.

#90 - Matt Priddis:
Needed a midfielder. Was tossing up between Priddis and Boyd, was glad that Boyd slid a further 3 rounds and I was able to take him at #107.

#93 - Roger Hayden:
Could have waited a few more rounds and picked Wirrpanda if Hayden had been taken, but wanted to take him as soon as possible. Possibly the best small backman in the competition.

#104 - Bryce Gibbs:
Was once again thinking about Boyd here, but opted for Gibbs. Adds to my midfield rotations and can kick a few goals.

#107 - Matthew Boyd:
Finally took Boyd after a few rounds of nearly taking him. Was pleased that he slid this far, definitely underrated and one of the Bulldogs' best midfielders.

#118 - Chris Newman:
Steal. Surprised that he slid this far - I even overlooked him... Probably would have taken him at #79 if he had come to mind. Possibility for Richmond's captaincy this year and strengthens my backline more so.

#121 - Alwyn Davey:
Took a small backman here to crumb Pavlich and Bradshaw. Decided that Davey was the best one available and took him. Matt Campbell and Lindsay Thomas were considered.

#132 - Domenic Cassisi:
Cassisi has always been one of my favourites - big fan. Would have liked Salopek too, but didn't happen.

#135 - Travis Johnstone:
Went for the best available midfielder here. Johnstone would rip it up, considering he doesn't have to put up with the tag (Kirk, Bateman, Power, Priddis etc).

#146 - Matt Campbell:
Thought about this one for a while and thought that I'd go with another small, crumbing forward. This would allow Davey to play up the field a bit more.

#149 - Xavier Ellis:
Rapidly improving and will be one of the competition's best in a few years, in my opinion. Played a big part in the Grand Final.

STRENGTHS?
- Spine (Scarlett, Croad, Pavlich, Bradshaw)
  • Ruck rotation
  • Defence

GAMEPLAN?

Use Sandilands' height to advantage to win the majority of the ball. Get the clearance through Kirk, Power and Boyd. Give it to Bateman or Priddis if available and bomb it long into the forward line, trying to get Pavlich and Bradshaw in one on one contests. Davey and Campbell to crumb.

Croad to mainly play on the opposition's best forward. Scarlett to go to the second best and provide a lot of run. Newman and Morris to rotate on the third tall/floating half back. Mattner to rebound primarily and Hayden to the best small forward. Petrie is also available if Scarlett/Croad are being beaten.

Gibbs, O'Keefe, Ellis, Johnstone, Davey, Cassisi, Boyd, Power, Pavlich, Priddis, Kirk and Bateman to rotate through the middle.
