WALSH%20Phillip150193.jpg

Strategy & Innovations Coach: Phillip Walsh
Birthdate: March 15, 1960
Playing Career
Collingwood Football Club(1983) - 22 Games
Richmond Football Club (1984 - 1986) - 40 Games
Brisbane Bears (1987 - 1990) - 60 Games
Coaching Career
Geelong Football Club: Strength & Conditioning Coach
Port Adelaide Football Club: Assistant Coach
Had a 122-game career with Collingwood, Richmond and the Brisbane Bears between 1983 and 1990, as well as stints as Geelong’s strength and conditioning coach and most recently as a Port Adelaide assistant. As the strategy and innovations coach, Walsh is charged with devising ways to combat opposition sides.

Not a bad option, he's an oposition coach at WC, wonder why he's never mentioned.

I agree, its the most imposrtant position in the team so they have to be very thorough. I don't know why Scott Burns isn't being mentioned anymore. Unlike Watters who's only been ass coach for 1 year, Burns was ass coach at WC for 2 years and he's been learning off who I believe with no doubt has to be the Coach of the Year. What they have done at WC is nothing short of amazing going from LAST PLACE to top 4 and a prelim final in 1 year is Coaching at its best. He will bring alot of Woosha IP with him.

Leon Cameron would be great for the same reasons, 2 years at Hawks under 1 of the other best coaches in the league. Rocket would be a decent option too, you can't beat his experience and I'm sure he'll know exactly who he'd want to coach with him. I think if Cameron came on he could persuade Rocket to come on aswell as an Assistant or "Director of Coaching" as they like to call the senior assistants.

But is say NO! to Williams or Tudor. The others are way better options.

Watters has coached WAFL as well though.

Yeah i know, but at the highest level didn't he only come to Collingwood this year? And he didn't coach AFL level before. I was just comparing him with Burns because no one was talking about Burns anymore and he has been at AFL level for 2 years. Doesn't matter though, from the sounds of things Burns isn't even on the table. My preference would be a Leon Cameron Coach Rocket (head of coaching) combo anyway. Leon would make it happen. Its the job Rocket would apply for anyway with another club if he didnt get the head coach job with us.

and coached Subiaco to two premierships.

I reckon that is a better indicator of someones coaching ability than being an assistant coach at an AFL club because you still don't know what they will be like if they are a senior coach and running the show.

On top of that people like Malthouse have spoken quite highly of Watters coaching ability.

I'm pretty happy we're going through so many candidates. As long as we have it sorted say a week before trade week I'm sure the panel will find us the right coach.

They did it last time.

pretty sure burns has said he doesn't want to move back to melbourne, hence removing himself from the saints position.

Article today has Burns saying he is not ready to be a senior coach.

as posted last week, Watters will be announced after the GF.

Signed and sealed

CC

Why wait until after the GF then? If what you're saying is true. Might as well start planning for next year ASAP, with trade week and drafting coming up.

St Kilda doesn't owe any other clubs favours, least of all the filth.

Watters has been asst coach at Coll for 2 years - before that he coached Subiaco for 3 years and 2 flags.

FYI Subi are in todays WAFL GF, suggesting Watters left the club in good shape (he inherited it in good shape too from Peter German 2004 & 2006 premierships, & who has Willy in the VFL GF).

Does German have BO because he sure can coach.

Your playing list is a bit like ours was at 2005/06. Cherry ripe to win a flag now.

With this in mind you could do worse than to have Neil Craig for a couple of seasons. You guys already play a similar style to us and he may be able to get the extra out of your guys to win a Grand Final.
Think back to 2005/06 when we were flying, and it is because of Craigy's coaching with our mature players who were all peaking.

But it would only be a quick fix to steal a flag IMO. He is not the best coach of younger players.

Gary Ayres...... Undefeated season, unbelievable effort to take a non AFL alligned club to a premiership. First time its been done since 2000.

Starting to think he's the right man for your lot. Considering the coaches who are available, Ayres would be a great choice.

Wouldn't mind if Ayers brought Galea along with him as well. Very impressive, would probably be an improvement over a Gamble type. Could give him a crack at least until Siposs develops.

:thumbsu::thumbsu: agreed i was just going to post about him. Any idea how old he is? Stuff Siposs i reckon he'd be the future if he plays like he has this year

I think he turns 27 in January next year, so he's getting on in age, but he could still be worth a crack, considering older guys like Pods and Callinan have been given a shot.

Should definitely consider in any case.

Was he a late developer, why was he never drafted?

Dean Galea is 24.

Is he? This page says his birthday is on the 11th of January, 1985.

Either way, I'm happy to take the punt on him in the short term as a low round pick, PSD or rookie pick. If he can provide a strong marking target inside 50 and provide an improvement on Ryan Gamble's output, it'd be a worthy investment, even with the KPF stocks we have.

Eh might be thinking of someone similar, if it's listed take that and disregard me. :D
