Really hoping they do an M. Blake and only given Murdoch 7 more games so that we don't get Murdoch junior under the father/son rule

That makes sense......

When I was a boy, John Years was my first football hero....until Polly arrived.

Yeates as I recall it was a much maligned player...unfairly IMO. Didn't know Rice ever captained...must have been before my memory banks checked in.

Thanks for that Fred. :thumbsu:

The interesting this is that Geelong played Hawthorn four times that year!
"We beat Hawthorn in the grand final — in fact the in last game of the year we beat Hawthorn. We beat them in the last round of the season, and then we beat them in the second semi-final and then we beat them in the grand final.

"We actually played them four times that year, and we drew with them in Round 7 and then we beat them three games in a row.’’

I’m not sure about that. He suffered a crippling ankle injury and came back from surgery quicker than anyone has. Not surprisingly he looked downright ordinary in the QF. It’s easy to confuse recovery from injury with age/loss of form

The guy has never been quick so loss of pace won’t be a factor.

To think he was overlooked by some clubs in the 2006 draft because of a dodgy knee

Joel was a standout junior track and field athlete. "He was the state hurdling champion from under-10s through to the under-15s, and in one year held every running and jumping record at the Bendigo Sports Centre, except the 100 metres sprint."

Hawthorn rejected him.

Speaking of milestones:
"Selwood's 21 votes in the 2014 Brownlow Medal count saw him set a new club record for most career polled Brownlow Medal votes by a Geelong player."
Four Robert Rose Awards - the most of any current player in the league
Only player in VFL/AFL history to win the AFL Rising Star Award and play in an AFL premiership within the same year: 2007
Youngest player in Geelong history to play 200 senior games (27 years of age): 2015
All-Australian: 2009, 2010, 2013 (C), 2014 (C), 2016 (C), 2017
Carji Greeves Medal: 2010, 2013, 2014
AFLPA Best Captain Award: 2013
AFLPA Robert Rose Most Courageous Player Award: 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014
Michael Tuck Medal: 2009
AFLCA Best Young Player Award: 2008
AFL Rising Star Award: 2007
AFLPA Best First Year Player Award: 2007
Geelong F.C. Most club votes in Brownlow Medal: 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015

Regarding returning after his ankle surgery, apparently Joel said there was no way he would not be playing for Dangerfield's 250th game against the Crows.

The NO4 jumper to be duel Brownlow.
I just really, really want Joel to win a Brownlow! Remember when Ablett won his second? They were neck + neck, you could see Ablett wanted Joel to win.

EDIT:

For the doubters

Ablett received three votes in the final game of the 2013 season, beating Joel Selwood by one vote + Dane Swan by two votes.

"He paid rich tribute to his father and Selwood after the count, saying they deserved to be Brownlow Medallists.

Ablett added he hoped to only poll two votes in the last round so he could share the Brownlow with Selwood."
ABC

"Ablett also said he would have been rapt had Selwood won the medal on his own."
SBS

"He said he was "shattered" to have stolen the medal from former teammate Joel Selwood with three votes in round 23."

Remember it well, my first Premiership as a cats supporter, my hero was John Devine.

I didn’t get that impression when I watched him, he looked very disappointed when Jimmy won it too.

He’s very competitive so it doesn’t surprise me.

Devine was larger than life! Devine became the Geelong coach in 1986, after the sacking of Tom Hafey + recruited players - Garry Hocking, future captain Mark Bairstow, Billy Brownless, Bruce Lindner, Gavin Exell, Barry Stoneham + David Cameron.
Why did he receive a six week suspension? Can't find anything about it.

Devine was despised by a few players from all accounts.

I know there was a rift between him and Mark Jackson which caused a bit of tension around the club.

They didn't see eye to eye at all.

As I understand it Devine was trying to do the right thing by the club..it was almost broke but the players looked at him like had stepped out of a time machine and really knew nothing about "modern footy".. he just wasn't someone the players respected ..perhaps they really didn't know much about him. ..what was the time difference between him playing and coaching.. 20 years?

It was 20 years. Finished playing in 66, first year as coach was Mark Jackson's last as a player. Jacko could play a bit too. That's generally ignored given his antics.

Well many may not agree, but Jacko, while a competent footballer, was just the sort of guy you don't want playing for your side. If you set a game plan, you would have some reservations that Jacko would adhere to it.

I always thought that he was very UN-Geelong like. Not a bad player, but crude in his application, and very much self centered rather than team orientated.

I can see the counter argument, but for me, he's not a player I would have recruited.

It was no great mystery. Jackson was a full forward and a pretty good one. He just couldn't play anywhere else. After the first two rounds Devine wanted to try our new gun recruit in Billy Brownless at full forward. In those days that meant dropping Jackson (echoes of the Roach and Taylor problem at Richmond a few years earlier). Given he'd kicked 6 in the opening round against Fitzroy, Jackson didn't like it. Like many things it would be handled way better these days.

No doubt Devine had spent too long away from footy and had difficulty relating to the players, but the entire club and almost entire footy system was dysfunctional then. Too harsh to pin it just on Devine.

In reality it was always going to be a struggle that year because we'd lost one of our two best players in Williams, as well as Toohey and Bolton. Plus Hafey of course. When you look at the years before and after we weren't a terrible team. We look back on 1986 as when we were rubbish (it was the last time we finished bottom 4), but it was more of a blip than a sustained pattern.

He was an interesting character that's for sure.
I thought Jacko was terrific, especially his biffo lol when it was kind of allowed. Didn't he belt Gary Ayres in the face in Geelong v Hawthorn Round 12 1985 game? + GASr was reported for throwing the ball :rolleyes::rolleyes: That was the game where Matthews broke Bruns' jaw.

I rather like the characters of the game like Jacko + Acker lol
