Resource Potential Port Adelaide father son players

JACKSON Mead is a step closer to following in his dad's footsteps at Port Adelaide after the Power officially nominated him as a father-son selection.

He is expected to attract a bid somewhere in the second round of the draft, but could also drift into the early 30s, which would be the ideal result for the Power, who hold picks 12, 18 and 29 as their early selections.

Mead is a smart player who won All Australian honours after a consistent carnival for South Australia, and was picked as a forward.

He is clever around goal and also able to collect disposals through the midfield.

Now that's officially done time to trade out 29. There's no way Adelaide aren't bidding at 28, even if they aren't really interested. If we still have 29 them bidding at 23 wouldn't surprise me, even if it's a touch early. Them 'forcing' us to pay that pick would have been raised more than once by Roo and Smart. Spite Port, benefit Adelaide, has always been their order of importance.

All true but even adelaide know that's a dangerous game to play with a whole lot of possible father/sons coming thru for them in the coming years.

They have probabkly already asked for a gentlemans agreement whereby we don't bid on Borlase.

Personally I want us to bid on Borlase just to prove we want him and he should be ours and it matters to us.

Need to get the girls team up and running
Yeah spacing it out so that we can have 30 years of Wanganeen girls playing for the club's AFLW team. Think his oldest daughter from his first marriage is 18 or 19 and first girl from second marriage is 6.

It would be hard to coach your son because you would have obvious bias, it would be hard to delist/drop them. Could cause drama at home etc. I get it. Hopefully Taj is the next Dusty Martin type and there won’t be any issue

Putting this in here as a reference point more than anything, as there was a post about Borlase's eligibility last night and another today in the Draft thread

Daryl played 246 games for Port between 1985 and 1998. Borlase's total includes preseason cup games and games played in 1997 and 1998

The 200 premiership point games and finals rules for the clubs allocated to Port ie Magpies games only upto the 1996 SANFL Grand Final are counted. Trouble is the SANFL used to count preseason cup games in their official totals. From the AFL Rules - 9 May 2019 version

8. Father/Son Rule
8.1 Players Eligible – All Clubs
Subject to Rule 8.4, a Club may include a person on its Primary List or Rookie List if
the person’s father played 100 or more Senior Matches (being either Home and Away
or Finals Series Matches) with the Club.
8.2 Western Australian and South Australian Based Clubs
........
(iv) The Port Adelaide Football Club may include a person on its Primary List
if that person’s father played 200 or more Senior Matches (being either
home and away or finals series matches
) at one of the following clubs
prior to, but not including, 1997:
(A) Port Magpies Football Club;
(B) Woodville Football Club;
(C) West Torrens Football Club;
(D) North Adelaide Football Club;
(E) Central Districts Football Club; or
(F) West Adelaide Football Club.

The AFL clarified Borlase's position at this article in May 2018 (also mentioned other potential father sons)

Who is eligible: A player must have played 200 or more SANFL games for Port Adelaide before 1997 – the year the Power entered the AFL. A contentious case is one of Darryl Borlase and his son James, who is a key position player at Sturt and a chance for the 2020 AFL Draft. Darryl was credited with 201 SANFL games for Port when he played in the 1996 SANFL Grand Final, but that was stripped back to 177 games when the AFL declared Escort Cup games were ineligible. To make matters worse, James, a member of the AFL's Australian under-15 team last year, is part of Adelaide's Next Generation Academy because he was born in the Middle East.

The reason James in in Adelaide's NGA zone is that he lives in Netherby which is in Sturt's zone and Port are allocated to WWT, Norwood, South's and West's metro zones. If he lived 1 km or so to the west of Unley Rd and lived in Hawthorn, Lower Mitcham, Colonel Light Gardens he would be in the West Adelaide's zone and that means he would fall to us under our NGA zone.

Reason why Daryl didn't play 200 games before 1996 ended, was he was injured a lot. He missed 1988-89-90 and 1995 flags due to injuries, but won 1992-94-96-98 flags. If he didn't get injured so much, he would have 8 flags like Greg Phillips, Paul Northeast and Neville Hayes, been inducted to our Hall of Fame and James would be our father son.

He played 3 games in 1985 and Port between 1986-96 played
24+24+24+25+25+23+24+25+26+25+26 = 271 games.
So he played 174 of those 271 games to go with the 3 he played in 1985 to get to 177 eligible games.

Pity those 24 preseason games he wasn't injured in couldn't be swapped for 24 premiership games.

I thought that the reason our father/son cutoff was 200 compared the WA clubs' 150 games was because of the pres-season/night games being counted by the sanfl issue.
Surely this is inequitable - it should either be 150, not including preseason, games to match the WA clubs, or 200 games including the preseason games. It's like the afl have thrown in another hurdle to stop us getting access to father son players. The club need to grow some balls and fight this one properly

Nope.

In 2001 when the AFL redrafted the father son rule they asked the WAFL and SANFL to submit data to make a fair rule for the sons of the champion and long serving players of those comps to be considered.

The SANFL counted preseason games in their totals, the WAFL didn't, it like the V/AFL kept separate records.

It all goes back to the 1960's when you had national carnivals and players missed several games a year and the 3 big leagues set up Club 200 and picking up state games and preseason/night series games for players who got to 200 games in total and giving those players some financial and non financial benefits if you got to 200, when there was little money in the game.

The dopey pricks at the SANFL forgot about all this and not reading the proposed 2001 AFL rule changes about only counting premiership season games, that was the problem.

The AFL tried to work out in such a way that
the number of eligible fathers who played 200 games for the 6 clubs attached to Port, roughly equalled
the number of eligible fathers who played 200 games for the 4 clubs attached to the crows, roughly equalled the number of eligible fathers who played 150 games for the 4 clubs attached to the West Coast roughly equalled
the number of eligible fathers who played 150 games for the 4 clubs attached to the Fremantle roughly equalled
the average number of eligible fathers who played 100 games for a VFL club.

It was a smoothing exercise, but the SANFL presented the wrong data. If the right data had been presented, the eligible SANFL players probably would have had to play 175 games to link up their sons to Port and the crows.

Does a potential NGI kid have to agree to be a clubs' nominated draftee, or can he simply decline their offer to place him on their list of nominations?
I thought that kids had opportunity to decline to be taken as a F/S if they so chose?

That's NGA not NGI. Yes and yes. He already is in their academy, so he is benefitting from being in there. I think he has to sign another form come a month or two before draft day.

It should have been a straight 100 game eligibility for all Port players SNAFL and AFL. Feck the other SNAFL clubs. What lunacy even brought them into the equation. We have no emotional attachment to Pecker/North/West/Central/Torrens players. It makes the whole concept of FS look ridiculous.
