And if he'd stopped trying to push Jade Rawlings in the back every time he got led to a marking contest. I'm surprised he didn't give away 50 on one or two occasions.

5. Embley. Inspirational, and his injury is a huge blow to our season. IMO the worst player we could lose including Gardy.

4. Cox. Stood up around the ground in Gardiner's absence. Was funny watching him go for a run in the last quarter though.

3. Cousins. Along with Embley he was the inspiration for our second half blitz.

2. Wirrpunda. 100th game, and an outstanding performance.

1. Hunter. After Rawlings towelled up Glass early, Hunter did an excellent job shutting him down..

Apologies to Banfield, Jakovich, Jones, McDougall and Staker.

I don't understand the votes for Glass myself, his effort on Rawlings was insipid IMO and gave Hawthorn an easy target early, although he did improve when taken off him. I agree with Frodo, he's not KPP material, but at best a reasonable third tall down back - and IMO Carroll is just as reliable.

On a more positive note, I thought Brent Staker was an exceptional positive from this week's game. Did not look outclassed out there at all.

It's not so much a run as a big ol' lope...

Agreed wholly. Some of his work on half back and into the midfield was quite good later on.

Glass - two weeks in a row he's been thrashed by his chief opponent early so that we are in a losing position. That's no disgrace (Tredrea and Rawlings are excellent and good opponents respectively), but you have to remember that his main job is to beat or at least break even with that player. Both players calmed down a bit when Hunter was put on them. Then Glass does quite well around the ground, but his usefulness there is limited because of his wobbly disposal by foot. He's certainly trying hard and we don't have a better option atm, but.....

McDougall did OK - and better than before, but he has a long way to go. He may look good on TV from a long way away, but at the ground he doesn't exactly dominate. We picked him high at the draft and the expectations have been very high (probably unfairly so). He's taken a long time to get in the team (remember he played the last 2 games last year and has hardly played this year). Yet going forward this year he will be an important player - a tall forward or back to take on the best KPPs in the comp. Is he up to it? Well, we'll see - that's his challenge.

It was obvious to everyone at the game who I spoke to, plus the papers, plus even Ken Judge on the radio (amazing isn't it) that our top 4 players on Fri night were Cousins, Embley, Cox & Wirra in whatever order.

Stats - don't be ruled by them.

But reality is that stats do rule. I am even told that some umpires ask for the stats before giving Brownlow votes.
With BFPOTY I never look at stats before voting. The only anomaly is that often my voting changes slightly after watching the TV replay. You certainly see a different game on TV v being there. Doogs is a good example. He certainly looked a lot better on TV. Mind you I thought Staker did okay but the TV raps about him having a rising star performance were way over the top IMO. He hit two easy goals after the game was over in just over a quarter of a game of footy o the field. Not a lot more.

5 - Cousins (Captain class)
4 - Cox (Stepped up back into his best form)
3 - McDougall (Best game yet - solid & no errors)
2 - Embley (Becoming a vital cog - will be missed)
1 - Jakovich (Reliable)

Apologies to Wirrpunda - an excellent game marred by just a few too many mistakes.

5. Cousins
4. Cox
3. Embley
2. Jakovich (The great man comes into my Video store :) )
1. Staker

Was not impressed with Glass at all. He did do better after the half, but needs to do more when playing on dangerous forwards. Elementary mistakes from him costs us at times.

I actually thought he did quite well. He forced Rawlings to lead long and wide in the first half, and at the very least always made a physical presence in all contests. Was a bit lucky not to give away a 50m penalty with his pushes in the back, but otherwise he did alright.

Yes Rawlings took a lot of marks, but how many of them were within scoring range? Glass did well IMO.

Surprised I'm the only one giving anything to Collica. I thought his work (particularly as a loose defender) was pretty solid.

It was quite a solid effort by Collica. He was executing his two-handed punches well, plus the roaming backman bit went quite to plan as well. But I wouldn't have rated him in the top 5 eagles on the night, perhaps the top 8. The good news is though that he did enough to retain his place in the side which I am happy about.

IMO, he makes our HB line all the tougher and much much stronger. He played well for a bloke who hasnt played much AFL this season. He'll get better as each week goes on imho!

I didn't say anything to suggest he didn't make our team tougher in the backline. Or that he won't get better as eack week goes on.

I agree he is a a 'plus' addition to have in our side.

I couldn't quite fit him in for a vote. Good game though, and seemed to get better as the night wore on and he adjusted to the pace of the AFL.

A pleasing performance because it's almost a year since his last AFL game and it takes time to adjust.

BTW. Rawlings took 9 marks against Glass whilst Glass was on him. 9 marks is good for a whole game,

yeah I know!

My votes - I thought we were pretty average from middle of 1st qtr to half time, but maybe the hawks were just more desperate than us. The second half was great hard at the ball footy!!! Damn shame about Embers, who has been amazing all year and played a great 31/2 qtrs again.

5 - Embley
4 - Cousins
3 - Cox
2 - Wirrpunda
1 - Hunter

Some interesting choices ahead this week for the Saints game. They have some quality talls in the fwd line so our defence will be tested again.....shame about Josh's hammy as well.

Yeah - good point :D :D

Well we certainly caned the blue baggers, but with big Frase back from suspension, Reiwoldt at CHF, Hamill from HFF and maybe Kozschitzke (he might be more defender?) it could be a challenge.

Having said that if our midfield plays well like we have most of the season we can starve their supply. With Gardy, Fletch and now the mighty Embers out the others will have to step up!!!

I just dont think the saints will be as easy as the ladder positions suggest - but I hope I am really, really wrong and we absolutely FLOG em!!!!

:D :D
