Yes Yes I am the Pou fanboy whatever. I am going in defence of Mattaes.

Firstly, wtf is going on with his TOG 60% terrible. I assume RTB is using him as a short burst sub whilst hebuilds up the fitness post corkey.

That needs to put his hame into context them.

15 touches
4 clearances
5 tackles including some run downs.

OK Here me out. He is not going as badly right now as we think he is.

I will start with the eye test and what he needs to work on

I agree currently, he looks a bit rushed, and not quite right with his timing espescially coming out of a stoppage. On the run, he seems better but he is a mid so that is more of the issue.

The overhead handballs. Still has 1/2 per game and I agree needs to stamp it out

I want him to become more of a marking threat which we know he has.
Getting some easier ball. A bit like Windy, I think he is doing a lot of tough unrewarded physical work in tight but ot always getting the cheapie. Whilst in practice this might beubseless, it grows confidence to accumulate. Think Sheezel, Windy, Daicos.

Lastly, he needs to use his legs more to get out of the stoppage. To me that is the skill that will unlock him. At the end of the 2024 that was what he was doing, against the Lions, Crows and Swans. We saw his effectiveness and decisioin making improve. It was after his spell in the twos. I am certainly not advocating for this. I think he just needs the coaching renforcement to keep driving his legs because we know he can.

Improvements
- On the other hand, I think his tackling and defensive pressure hs actually improved. I saw over the last two weeks his efforts including a great run down tackle.

- I think whether people want to admit it or not, POu has improved his ability to get his arms free in tight and break through a tackle and dish off a small handball. The big bodied mid move. This too me is massive, at the very least it shows me he can become like Josh Kennedy type. Over the last few weeks, this has been noticeable.

I think once he is free out of the stoppage his decision making has improved, mremarkebly. Here is the thing, there were a couple times on the weekend where he was out and then should have just kept going. He will get there.

Another thing, I know training is not everything, hwoever at training and in the inal preseason game you can see when he puts it together he will be a player. I will continue defending him untill I think he has a real good run at it.

This is what he can do

His form is a worry but the bigger issue for mine is where did his speed and athleticism go. Only 21 but somehow it’s vanished.

Can you give an example of how he has lost his speed? Do you mean explosive / burst or chasing , field running speed? Or both?

Good post. I’m not a Pou fan anymore but its nice to read different opinions.

Don’t forget about his game in 2024 against Carlton when he got 10 coaches votes playing full time Mid. Thought he was going to be a superstar, but he hasn't played a good game since.

He looks so low on confidence at the moment. Starting to wonder if he’s homesick or just not fitting in with the players.

He used to be a spark plug, but plays so timid now and with no emotion. Dare I say it, kind of Billings like.

I think he’s just very hard on himself. When he’s confident the energy is there and he’s a bit of a spark plug.

His burst and acceleration. Go to the goal he kicked against Sydney at 0:58 in the post above mine. Gets the ball, barely breaks a sweat but bursts away and kicks it. And his goal against Adelaide in the wet the week after is another example. 2-3 steps and he’s gone, now he looks like he’s got concrete boots on.

I dunno what the reality is but he's coming back after a year out, copped a corkie and apparently theres been a virus rip through the group. Ad to that Steele and MacLobster aren't around to do the grubt work and we have a very very very inexperienced midfield. I think he's just finding the going a bit tough atm and fair enough.

So that means it is either a chronic injury he is carrying (which perhaps explains the 60% TOG we are seeing) or he has lost that explosive speed for good due to the injury.

i won't bore anyone with Ai and i will spare myself the insults, but anyone can check. It will take 3-6 months to 'load up' Pou's body to get back to pre-injury burst speed.
Of his four injuries, the (OK just this bit cos i can't spell, 'Femur Stress Fracture is by far the most damaging to explosive speed, followed closely by the Plantaris Tendon Rupture'

Lol IDK if this is directed at me and I am not sure if you are aware of how these forums work. You are entitled to your opinion and I am entitled to mine. You made a thread about Pou and I made opposing POV. So there you go.

Ironiclly if you dont like it then ... as you said. hide the post.

These guys are probably the youngest most inexperienced midfield in footy. It's easy to play free when you have Macrae and Steele etc playing there too. They take heat and you play your own game. Last week Flanders a 24 year old sub 100 game player who has played minimal midfield was our most senior mid and he's out the back waiting to be fed.

As they develop they will start to pay off. They are getting forged under pressure and kept up with a double premier who have an elite midfield. You don't get that by going into a shoot out. We tried to minimise impact. These guys would have had very defined roles and markers. I think for 3/4 the coaches would have been ecstatic with performance.

The corkie has been a set back this year. I think playing through it is going to be good for him long term. He wasn't terrible against Brisbane. I reckon a really good game is just around the corner.

I think we tend to bag guys if they're not producing elite football but there has to be a transition period and Pou unfortunately has had his injury setbacks.
