If the purpose of the double-header is to maximise crowds, then the AFL has shot themselves in the foot by scheduling the games so early on Friday. Even in the past, stand alone Friday Night NAB Challenge games at AAMI haven't started til about 7:10pm, so I can't understand why both games are on so ridiculously early. There's a reason why Friday Night games are scheduled for 7:40pm or 8:10pm (8:10pm is my preferred start time for any night game anyway).

I don't finish work til 5 so it'll be the mad dash down to AAMI after work (through peak hour). It'll mean I'll miss the bulk of the Port game (I was actually interested in watching St Kilda seeing as we're playing them in round 2), but at least I'll be there just in time for the Crows game (which is the most important thing at least).

The NAB Cup GF is played on Friday in Melbourne due to the 'Bushfire Relief Concert' at the 'G.

Im guessing the SANFL have requested the double header so they don't have to open the stadium up twice for what would be very minimal crowds. And having them on Friday will mean they dont have to pay penalty rates to staff. Hence they're only opening up the Members Section.

And Port cop the 3pm timeslot as i figure the SANFL/AFL are assuming more people will rock up for the later game if it's Adelaide.

Certainly a good idea having the Double Header, however having it on Friday will certainly minimise crowd numbers, especially for the 3pm game.

Suits me alrite! Finish work 9.30am! Go and catch a couple of games of footy, be home by 10ish, and get my four hours sleep before work Saturday :thumbsu:.

Spot on, its all about saving costs, I don't think they would have gotten that bigger crowd on a Saturday anyway and would prefer people to come to a ganme in the main season. Playing on the friday also alows the players to have the weekend off. Some of the Melbourne clubs play their NAB challenge games are played on a Friday so its not unusual.

What would be the reason why this wouldnt be on Saturday?

If I dont have to work then ill be making the drive down for the games, but I may be one of about 50 for the Port game.

On a Saturday...double header, free entry for AAMI/Season ticket holders, great value...you'd be pushing 10k at least id say. Id even want that to be an annual thing when both clubs are out of the PS cup early.

Seems like a wasted opportunity to me.

I agree, I cant believe how badly scheduled it is. If it was on saturday I would go with my fiance to both game, as it is I do think I will be going as not only is the Port game at a ridiculous time, the crows game starts at 6:30

You are spot on there. Even if it was given a decent timeslot, you would be lucky to get 10k people there. I mean it's the NAB challenge, most people simply don't care about it, even with free entry and car parking, hence the SANFL's decision to try to minimise cost. I'll probably go though, as it beats watching the reality rubbish on tv.
