Here's a thought i find amusing... we smack them yesterday by 10 goals.

Come round 2, Goodwin swings a massive coaching master-stroke and we lose by 16 points... played our hand too early?

Maybe this was going on. Maybe it wasn't.

Maybe it was a match simualtion and we won't know and it doesn't matter lol
With our horrific skills last year, I don't think we can afford to fake that we have horrific skills this year in a practice match to avoid "showing our hand"

Here's a thought.

On Saturday, we got smacked by Melbourne's VFL team.

In Round 2, we will play their AFL team.

On Saturday, Melbourne played like they wanted to win, regardless of the importance of the game.

North played like it was too hot and we didnt want to get hurt.

We need MONGREL in that team. Everytime they put on the jumper. They need to hate to lose, everytime they come out to play.

I'm loving this "maybe we kept our powder dry" narrative.

Yep wouldn't want anyone working our secret herbs and spices.
Indeed.
Someone at club said if our mids and forwards don't learn to defend better we'll finish last again.
We weren't keeping our powder dry.

It’s disappointing but I remember going to Melbourne this time last year and watched the North V Pies practice match and we won by 35 points and looked great. Then, we had the season we had so I’m going to wait for round 1 and see what happens.
Collingwood was missing a few players in that game and people said a pre season match sim game means nothing. This year, Melbourne was missing a few players, and if we'd won, it would be because a match sim game means nothing. It's only when we lose that a match sim game means anything. And then it means end of the world, we'll never win again.

We definitely weren't however this gives us some food for thought and in different conditions we should expect at least a better 4 quarter effort and somewhat different personnel

Lack of skills (still), poor decision making and lack of any sense of desperation disappointed me the most. Yep, just a praccy match but I am not sure your skills are crap in a praccy match but miraculously improve in a real game. Can't remember which coach said (Pagan?) that if you can't kick at 18 then you will still be an ordinary kick at 25. I just expected so much more. I suppose the 'real' praccy matches now will be a better guide.

I can't work out which is preferable; The ridiculous unfounded optimism based on pre-season training and intra-clubs EVERY F&$KING YEAR, or the ridiculous unfounded pessimism based on meaningless practice matches EVERY F&$KING YEAR. It really doesn't take much delving into the pre-season form of every club in the league to realise that it isn't often reflected in the fortunes of teams once the real matches start.

Contrary to the expectations thread, it turned out a whole lot of posters (including me) were expecting more than "no injuries" after all.

There are many reasonable fields of evidence that may prompt pessimism from our supporters. But Saturday's jog around in the heat shouldn't be one of them.

You literally just stated that the pessimism every year is unfounded every year

Have you been in a coma since 2018?

We've won one practice match out of ~10 in the last 4 years. I'd say there's reasonable correlation with the main season.

Collingwood is getting trotted out like some inverse relationship between preseason and season proper. No, Collingwood was an anomaly.

Every year we look lost in the preseason then lost in the season. Hoping to see signs of cohesion and winning spirit in our first up scratch match wasn't a ridiculous expectation.
