This is nice in theory but trial selection under Nicks is always highly indicative of the pecking order

Last year we played this squad against West Coast

Hamill, McHenry and Soligo sat out the first half. Soligo was sub, Hamill and McHenry didn't make the round 1 team.

Beyond that we had Strachan (first backup ruck), Gollant (backup to Burgess in the forward line), Nankervis and Cook on the bench

This was very close to the pecking order. And the order in which we played these guys throughout the year:

Soligo (sub round 1)
McHenry (played round 2, 10 games)
Hamill (played round 5, 7 games)
Nankervis (played round 4, 20 games)
Cook (played round 3, 15 games)
Gollant played fewer games than Burgess as a backup. Gollant was an emergency and Burgess on the bench

We also had guys like Pedlar, Milera, Murphy and Berry in the team or on the bench. All of those guys played round 1.

If you weren't in this squad, you had to wait much longer to play generally speaking

Curtin (round 8, 7 games)
Himmelberg (round 7, 9 games)
Parnell (round 4, 1 game)
Schoenberg (round 12, 4 games)
Dowling (round 14, 9 games)
Taylor (round 17, 9 games)
Bond (round 19, 7 games)
Edwards (never played)
Ryan (never played)
Keane played round 2 as cover for Borlase then retained his spot

The basic rules are that if you make the emergency list or don't play the first half of the trial, you are not best 22 but are the next men up and will probably play early. If you don't make the squad at all, you are far off getting a game and probably won't play until the second half of the year (if that)

It's nice to believe that Schoenberg and Taylor are just being given a chance to play their preferred positions. But the reality is their non-selection in the trial squad means they aren't close to AFL selection
History certainly says you are correct, however Murphy wasn’t in the A’s last week and he’s playing. Taylor and Schoey both played full time mid in the 2’s with no forward time that I saw. I can’t honestly believe they see Murphy as a midfielder in the AFL so maybe it’s simply that they are looking to get minutes for them in the positions they see them playing if they make the league team.

I know people have said Taylor has played forward in the AFL side, however whenever I watched him at the end of last year he was predominantly through the midfield, and Schoey when he got injured was certainly playing midfield. I personally don’t see any natural forward play in either so don’t really mind if they are depth for our mids at this stage. There will be injuries this year and they will both get the chance to show what they can be if they are good enough.

If I'm being kind to Nicks you'd say he put Taylor in the SANFL because his fitness is still a WIP and they want him to get a full game into his legs rather than a shorter game time he'd get in the main side against Brisbane.

Nicks hasn't really don't much to deserve the benefit of the doubt though, so it's probably just the usual of him overrating effort again and how you actually perform if you're a seasoned player is largely irrelevant.

Taylor played forward last week and was good, he made room for Murphy in the midfield. This is why Taylor should be sub as it give us flexibility with injuries and has shown he can play as a forward at the AFL level, kicked 3.1 as a forward against Sydney last year.

Very basic warm up session today. In fact they said to the boys it’s a dress rehearsal for our warm up tomorrow night. They had a bit of stationary kick to kick for 5 minutes then were asked to move for the next 5. Probably to blow the cobwebs out after the flight. Then “running” drills starting behind the goal line running into the middle. Not much effort expended to start with. Followed by repeat drills changing the action on each leg. Lunges on one version. Hip flex on another. Jump up and pretend to mark a ball on another. High knees. Scoop low. And final go was a sprint with a turn mid stride. Those that had footies in their hands would kick or hand pass to trainers as they got close to the middle.

These were the exercises that had Crouch go to Burgo for some treatment (about 10-15 minutes on the ground in the middle of the ground). Looked like he was working on his hip, lower back area. Thilthorpe was also struggling with this drill(s) and took his time to stretch out throughout the drill. He was last to finish every leg. Everyone else seemed to cope well. This was followed by more stretches.

Breaking into smaller groups they carried out a number of routines kick, hand pass, run rinse and repeat. Crouch rejoined them at this stage.

They then gathered around in circle while Nicks, Dawson (and Tex) talked about strategy to the group for tomorrow night. Hard to pick it up. They then broke into their groups. Defenders, mids and forwards.

Crouch and Soligo working on scooping up low rolling ground balls with a trainer for five minutes. Crouch looked to be moving ok at this point. Obvious groupings were then Pedlar, Laird, Rankine, Soligo, Dawson, Keays, Murphy, Peatling, Hinge. Backs were Keane, Nankervis, Bond, Murray, Worrell. Tex Fog TMurray Thilthorpe. On looking though photos Jones and Dowling were there but didn’t seem to be in any specific group. Murphy spent some time in deep discussion with one of the trainers while stuff was going on around him.

After about 50 minutes the lads left the field, said g’day to fans (Dawson impressive and time for everyone) Tex and filthy at the end just gorgeous with a young lady with special needs.

The lads grabbed their kits, snacks and drinks and hopped on the bus to head to their hotel.

Unfortunately nothing really to tell. Took video but they are too big to upload. Here’s a few snaps taken on the phone.

Doesn't explain Dowling or Schoey...

Interesting that Borlase is listed in the squad instead of Butts who I would have thought is the more obvious backup

You'd have to think anyone not injured and not in that squad of 30 is not close to a game

The logic around the squad is that its the best 23 plus a few extra who are pushing for a spot. Since this is the final hit out the best 23 will come down to this trial. I didnt watch the showdown trial but my take about Butts is maybe he is either sore or simply not performing. Borlase is showing a bit and showed some good progress last year. So much so he really isnt the problem on our list. So I am not upset to see him. The season is a marathon not a sprint.

With just two trial games and match sims under our belts round 1 selection is always going to be a bit of a guessing game. Every side is in the same boat. It doesnt help with the rezzies not starting for another month and we are reliant on Sanfl trial form where some of our guys are playing Sanfl u19 and reserve level players. But the VFL sides dont start until the same time as the Sanfl so its good every club is in the same boat for a month.

I don't fully agree with this. Our round 1 side will be the 22 playing in the first half of the trial against Brisbane with a few minor adjustments for player availability

Only reason Murphy got a game was because of Rach & Max being injured, surely!! Even so Taylor should of go a gig before him.

Well this is Davies first litmus test to see whether behind the scenes he accepts Nicks penchant for rewarding mediocrity. If Murphy comes out and plays 3 quarters for half a dozen mediocre possessions which even on a good day is what we can expect from him, will Davies accept him near the best 23 over and above better form players. Imagine if Dowling comes out in the Sanfl like he did last year and demolishes every side week after week while Murphy is sitting there getting his 8 possessions in the AFL. How can that be justified.

I meant in terms of the club knowing fully what their players form and experience offers us compared to other players. No doubt some players will be selected on trust alone rather then trial performance. Sorry, I didnt mean from a supporter perspective. Every club is in the same boat. They will have a fair idea but it wont be until between rounds 1 and 5 that players are found out where they are at.

As for Murphy, maybe he is purely in for side balance as AnB will surely be only given a half. So who knows.

Walker named ?
This is the one that confuses/concerns me

If as mentioned he would be rested - and games with long flights - then him going to Brisbane is odd
