Had a look at the Calder v Western games today, might put some thoughts down in the next day or two.

Calder shared their talent across the two games, whereas the Jets played their best side in the second match so the standard was a bit lop sided. Calder won the first game quite easily, whereas I'd say the Jets would've won the second by a couple of goals.

Hopefully someone will have a report on Kayne Murphy from Calder who was taken to hospital by ambulance, looked like a broken leg...he was in a lot of pain. Wish him all the best.

What a bugger, I watched the first quarter of that game and he was doing well.

Made it during the second quarter of the 2pm calder vs jets game....didnt see you there footyman, sorry.

Anywho without knowing i did get the idea that calder were without a few of there better players. Saw Luke Mitchell in the crowd with his ankles taped and thought there was no way he was in calders seconds. At the same time the Jets were more or less at full strength.

Looked as if Kretiuk has opted for a ball retention/stop, start style of play this season and it looked to be working, albeit against a weakened Cannons outfit. Saw the Jets string together mutiple kicks for the first time in about 12 months. Ben Casley showed some strong pre-season form playing all over the ground. Certainly would have done him VM chances no harm. Good to see Morris back and in form after about 10 months out with that shoulder. Got a bit nervous when he copped a few knocks but he's built himself up and took them well. Another looking very strong is Jake Allan, I can see him being a key in the engine room. Very strong in a tackle and good in congestion running low 10's for a 3km time trial. Could be one to watch in 2010. Also liked the look of Courtney Hylton.

For the cannons, thought Mitch Wallis was a class above most others on the field. Didn't know too many others out there aside from your usual customers Prestia, Maddern etc. Interesting to see the brother of Ben Warren and son of Brian Taylor out there.

Pretty sure he played in the first game was wearing no 49 I think.

I had heard that he was struggling with an achilles problem over the pre-season. Good to hear that he was up and about this weekend.

No worries Bachar...i should of messaged ya! Next time.

I'd estimate Mitchell played a quarter and a half of the Cannons early game, before he came off injured. After marking the ball about 35m out he gave it off by hand and in the following seconds of play got crunched when his teammate went to feed it back to him. Not sure why he didnt just got back and kick the goal - should be a lot more confident in front of goal than he is. Didn't reappear, but wonder if they intended to use him for part of the second game as well.

Agree with your comments on Wallis, a steal for the Bulldogs as father son.

i jsut heard from my sources that oakleigh played well against northern in there first game really showing something oakleigh for 2010 without there main man andreww gaff!! with there young players coming in with there experienced top ages should make out for a well balanced team in 2010!

Meli is going to be really exciting at TAC level. Terrific kicking skills and a bit of speed! I thought he fumbled a fair bit early but settled. Usual suspects for Calder- Wallis, Prestia, Schroeder, Mcleod. New players that ipressed me were Jordan Angus 201cm ruckman- I think he may well wear state colors this year. Alistair Kefford looks to have grown, Another tall Brandon Grenfell looks a real prospect and Nick Robertella was classy out of the backline. The Knights would have been disappointed in their footskills. I think they will be a little more competitive though. I hung around to watch 16s play and the Knights have a FANTASTIC group of kids. They wont be in the doldrums for much longer.

Just been and watched the Murry vs Bendigo game, and what a shambles it was..... Bendigo did not kick a goal for the entire game whilst Murry kicked 20 odd... Also Murry had half there side out and the game was only 15 min quarters would hate to see whats gonig to happen in the real season..... I think any of the Bendigo boys who have a home club who is a chance of playing finals i would be leaving now to join them, cause ur side will not win a game for the year.. and unless dustin martin was playing in that side no Bendigo boy is gonig to get drafted.....

So if anyone will give me $2 for pios to finish wooden spoon, ill have $10000 on it thanyou

couldn't agree more with you on the 16s. How goods hrovat? that first bounce break out of the centre was nothing short of spectacular. best on ground by a long way i thought. other good players were bonnadio celebicianin and irving

you are correct Davis 24, the Pios are a major dissapointment and half been for the past 5 years. They pride themselves on how many players get drafted from there; but the reality is that the only ones who get drafted are the ones who would have got drafted no matter where they played i.e. sellwood x 4, martin etc, their system is not comparable to the other areas. They had good players over the last 5 years but their structures and game plan (if they have any) are poor, I am afraid that the season is going to be very long and hard. Normally you can accept when a team is down for a couple of years as at times the players are not up to it, but not for 6-7 years there has to be something wrong.

The major issue i see is there disposal it is terrible, insted of making the young boys run 3 km time trial ect, maybe they should do lane work for a whole training session trying to improve there disposal by foot.. And in relation to your game plan point of view, i think ur correct in saying they dont have any.. Wouldnt be surprised at all if i see players throughout the year who no they are not gonig to get drafted, to leave and return to there local club.

oakleigh will be a very strong side this yearrr!! very good game against western yesterday. so watch out oakleigh are charging ahead!

The Bendigo Pioneers biggest concern is their coaching structures over the years they overlooked a home grown legend in Peter Dean, who then went to Murray, Rohan Warfe was there and left, Phil Carmen did the same; any one who tries to put any philosophies or structures that could help are ignored. Apparently Carmen left because he said to the other coaches that if the Pioneers keep structuring the way they do they will never win, he was told by one of the coaches to keep quite as they have been coaching there for 5 years, his reply was thats why then you have been down the bottom and with that he left. This was over heard by the parents, as it happened at a quarter time break...... something has to be done!!!:(:(

AFL Victoria gave the "Coach of the Year" award last year to the Bendigo coach!

I reckon they need massive changes too, the place has been a shambles since Rod McPherson left.
