Food, Drink & Dining Out Pre-Drinking Alone

It's so you don't spend $100 on booze out on the town

I know, I get it. Just think the term "pre-drinking" is a bit wanky.

Ignore me, I'm fixating on a minor issue that grinds me gears and no one elses.

To answer the OP, the only downside of drinking alone first is not pacing yourself to match the inebriation level of your mates.

I prefer to match the inebriation level of my mates. So meet up sober and all get drunk together. If for some reason they had got a start on me I would smash a couple down quickly to catch up a little.

We used to meet up at one of our houses before heading into town. We jokingly referred to it as "foreplay".

I think it's a very city thing too. Whilst it still happens in the country, with nothing more than 10 minutes drive away, it really isn't necessary to load up before heading out (except of course to save $$$). I know people that run home from the pub to poo and make it back in time before the next round is called.

I've done it a few times, would do it a lot more, but I don't live alone and if I'm going out drinking I try to get out of the house as soon as I can.

I enjoy it. Good way to save some coin, and there's just something to like about sitting down on the couch listening to whatever you want or watching whatever you want while you get a few beers in you on a Saturday night and it puts you in a good mood I find.

Only negative for me has been that it suddenly takes me far longer to actually leave the house and get to my destination. And once I ended up shockingly hammered, well past the level of my mates which wasn't good.

Once I'm sitting down with a movie or some games that is where I want to stay. Bugger going out and not having a say in the atmosphere after being teased with that.

I think it's more just a convenient and easy word to use instead of saying 'Yeah man we're going to Edgies house to consume drinks before we go out tonight' - it's 'Yeah Edgie is having pres'. When you think about it, it is a bit of a wank but imo it's just getting pissed before going to a club, nothing much more to it.

Can't you just watch a movie with a couple of bevs and then head out?

I'm glad off the rails and edgie are collaborating on this one

I don't go out as much as I used to when I was younger but pre-drinking wasn't as much of a thing back then because drinks weren't as expensive.

I can understand why young people are into pre-drinking these days though as trying to get pissed from scratch in a bar will cost you well over 100 bucks.

They do the same thing in Sweden where drinks in bars and clubs are even more expensive than here, the bars there don't really get going until around 10pm as people are at home drinking before they go out. We knocked off a bottle or two of vodka in our hostel before we went out there to save money.

Pre-Drinking is one of those Gen Y terms, back in our Gen X days we used to just call them warm ups to getting pissed.

Have you ever entered a GD thread without some tenuous, banal reference to Gen Y? Like your generation were cooler and edgier because you called it something different.

I'm not saying we were cooler or edgier because we called it something different although I agree with edgie that pre-drinking is a wanky term and doesn't make much sense when you are actually still drinking.

Gen X definitely had better music though, that's not even up for debate.

Why perpetually reference how old you are? It's bizarre, insecure behaviour.

People younger than you aren't that different.

I guess for me, nights in are nights in and nights out are nights out*. One of the best nights I've had was where we pre-drunk while watching movies, went to pub, left a bit early to keep watching manly movies. That sticks out to me. After Aliens and Boondock Saints, socialising to the top 40 didn't compare.

*Since before I was 18 I've been working sparrow fart hours on weekends so these big weekends out trekking round town are something I've never been part of, so maybe I don't understand.

No you aren't that different, the Gen X v Gen Y or Millennials is always talked up in the media though, there's even a Gen X v Millennials Survivor now.

I don't take any of that stuff all that seriously, most of the time I mention the Gen X v Gen Y stuff I'm just taking the piss, I don't actually hate Gen Ys.

Quite often when I've had drinks with mates at one of our homes before going out I have a better time than when we actually go out somewhere and then you think we should have just stayed home.

You can usually have a better conversation about stuff at home than in a noisy pub or nightclub and you can choose which music you listen to as well.

The only downside is that you can't pick up chicks at home but more often than not that doesn't happen anyway even if you go out somewhere.

Drinking alone is no "sadder" than wanking. If someone wants to sit alone and drink 6 beers every night then go for it. Humans have been finding ways to get off chops any given time, any given place for thousands of years. It's just easier now but quite a bit more expensive.

I often wonder if there is ever a time when a drug can be taken that gets you high with no side effects (dependency, comedown, cost) if it will be looked upon as badly as current drugs that have negative side effects.

Thoughts on it?

I'm currently downing a six pack of Fat Yak before heading out. I find, being an introvert, if I spend the pre-drinking time by myself I'm more engaged and enjoy myself than if I pre-drink with mates and then go out.

Often, I'll end up uninterested if I spend too much time with others. I see lone wolfing the pre-drinks as a necessary action.

I'm going to watch the movie Knocked Up and then enjoy a beer in the shower.

You guys?

F oath. I wouldn't have a session on my own but a few to wet the whistle before a night out is a must.

Once you get a bit older knocking back.a six pack by yourself will become a common thing

I find it rare to go a night without a beer but I still hate being drunk alone. Sometimes I knock off work and can't wait to have five or six beers but in the end, it ends up being about three stubbies over an hour and the last one ends up getting warm...

If you're getting genuinely pissed alone, you're probably not too healthy, and doing it regularly is a worry.

But drinking two, three is totally cool. There are worse vices and ways to relax.

As for pre-drinking alone? I think it can be pretty lonely feeling. I've had friends who live in Ringwood and shit like that come out to the city. I don't really fancy getting a train there at 6, then heading back in at 9, so I've had beers at home and ended up getting there a few times. Once or twice they've bailed or I've lost interest, and the feeling of being that drunk at home by yourself sucks nuts. I just get incredibly melancholic and nostalgic and it's honestly not a very good place to find yourself sitting in.

Honestly, these days I'm fairly comfortable with just turning it down if I'll have to 'pre drink' alone. It's pretty hard pummelling beers at a 'social rate' when you're faffing about on the internet and watching Adelaide v Richmond on Friday Night Footy. The beers with your mates, that first one when it's still sunny... that's basically the best part of the night – that's the camaraderie – to me these days, it just seems utterly pointless.
