Pre-Grand Final bye?

It's rumoured that in the near future it will be a mandatory 21 day break from concussion. I'm not strongly for or against the pre-GF bye but the arguement that it will prevent missing a GF due to a PF concussion will soon become obsolete

Welcome to bye month.

the 21 days at lower levels is due to lack of dedicated medical care AFL clubs provide, i see no evidence it will change soon

FWIW As a Dees fan I had to wait 14 days between destroying Geelong in the preliminary final and then smashing the Bulldogs in the grand final, was an excruciating wait. Do not recommend.

How does this have anything to do with the "Finals Bye"??? The bye was 3 weeks ago and the concussion occurred on Friday.
If the BYE was pre Grand Final he would be allowed to play. He would fit into the 12 day concussion rule. The post season BYE is ridiculous. We must try and give the best players the best chance to play in the biggest game of the year!

They are the rules and that's that. He will be sitting in the stands looking like he could play in a heartbeat, but of course he won't be, the silliness of the finals BYE has now been exposed. The best players must be available for the Grand Final and every chance given to them to do so. This was always going to happen at some point, unfortunately of all the Geelong players he would be the one i wouldn't want out of the Grand Final team. I think Geelong will start favourites, but the door has just been opened a little for the Pies or Lions?

How long should the pre-GF bye last? 3 weeks to recover from a hamstring? 12 months to recover from and ACL rupture?

Didn't happen according to Garry Lyon who continuously stated that last night was Bailey Smith's 1st every preliminary final making next week his 1st ever Grand Final. 2021 didn't happen according to him.

The pre finals bye was brought in because Brad Scott made a mockery of selection in the last week of the regular season in 2015.

Don’t think there should be any break after the H&A or the GF to be honest.
Season is long enough as it is.
I thought it was Ross Lyon with resting like half his Freo squad.

There shouldn't be any bye week around finals, but if they insist on having it, it makes more sense to do it before the grand final. Before finals itself just cheats the top 4 teams and gives 5-8 placed teams an advantage.

Genuinely forgot about this happening (thanks mainly to our ridiculous gov at the time but thats another issue) and I actually l went to the game and loved it so perhaps it could work.

Still prefer no byes at all tbh but its almost certainly going to happen

It's unfortunate but it's the reality of a contact sport. Stewart isn't the first and won't be the last player to get injured in a PF. Some will miss 1 week, others will miss 6, either way players will get injured in the PF and miss games.

We can't keep making reactionary decisions on the back of calls from unfortunate topical incidents.

Also, if a team wins through the QF and PF, that's two byes in a very short space of time, not exactly the ideal prep. It also reduces the benefit of winning the QF getting the week off to freshen up, and I do think it kills a lot of hype and momentum for the GF, especially for the neutral fans in that week.
But its not necessarily the same thing as an injury. He may be injured. He may be perfectly fit . We dont know yet and the afl dont give him an option to play if he is fit. Thats the difference.

Topical, of course. I'd bring it in.

PS Chris Scott last night said he'd like it brought in this year in time for next week if possible. Clearly joking, but Richmond fans ... GO!
I guess we should bring that in for a Grand Final, and yet I feel sorry for a player getting a concussion in a semi final and missing a cut throat prelim.

Why? Soo doesnt get all the best players in the one game. Half the players in afl are victorian or close to it. So vic vs rest is actually evenly matched and gets all the best players in one game.
Because there's no tribal state investment in a randomized team. It's as silly as those AFLX teams from 2019.

I understand the logic and premise for Byes before Finals and the GF - but I'm a bit old school in the sense that I see sport as a test of attrition as much as anything else.

Last man standing sort of thing.

Just play. If you get hurt and miss, stiff shit.

What a load of rubbish. Concussion is an injury and a very serious injury at that.

Brad and Ross Lyon

not a fan. Imagine right now, the grand final between Brisbane and Geelong is another 2 weeks away.

I remember back in 2010, when we had the draw, that second week of waiting for the grand final took away a lot of the enthusiasm and tested the anticipation for the neutral.
