Pre-Season Draft

My understanding was that first selection in the preseason draft is no longer handed to the last team, instead being drawn between the bottom 4 sides to avoid anyone poaching uncontracted players.
Please anyone correct me if I am wrong on this one.
But if I am right, why the hell does the Herald Sun continually claim that Carton has the first pick in the preseason draft?
Have they got no idea?
Today they are claiming that Carlton is still after some uncontracted players? How exaclty are they planning to secure them?

Off memory (Westy Boy had made a post about it on the main board), if a team wins more than 7 games, then they're excluded from the lottery. Since Freo finished with 36 points and Richmond 28, they're excluded - so the lottery is between Carlton and St.Kilda.

Spot on... 5 is the number of wins needed to be not given compensation picks in the National Draft for being a total basket case of a club... ie Carlton...

Yes less than 5 wins gives you a priority draft selection in the National Draft less than 7 wins and in the bottom 4 means you partake in the lottery for draft order in the pre-season draft. This year only Carlton and StKilda are eligible for the lottery. I think Carlton are still talking to out of contract players as they know that they'll at least have second pick and want to ensure that someone they want is available.

After what happened to Fabian Francis last year I think you may find that the better players are unwilling to nominate for the Pre-season draft.

After the National draft all teams have to submit their lists and player payment details to the AFL. This resulted in Freo, along with a lot of other clubs including ours, being excluded from the Pre-season draft as they were already committed to paying 100% of the salary cap. Fabian Francis who had already signed a contract with Freo was stranded and ended up playing in the WAFL.

This example and the fact that StKilda and Carlton are in a lottery for the first pick could mean that quality players are not prepared to take the risk.

And didn't he then do his knee ?

Poor bloody guy. It will be interesting to see if Freo honour their commitment to him and pick him up as a 29 year old midfielder one year out of the AFL recovering from a Knee reconstruction

No they've already come to "an arrangement" and he's returned to Adelaide. AFL career over.
