Cj was decided a few weeks back. Posted on here:) hopefully we see him get a few games asap! Has a bit of x factor.

We were interviewing guys over the last few weeks. Doubt we would waste the time unless we were still open to a few options. If we decided on CJ, it was less than a few weeks back (but maybe before the draft last night)

I'd say during the draft when there was no one left at our pick we wanted

We would never have considered Knoll after drafting Ned Reeves

And I agree with previous comments - CJ is a far better prospect than anyone else taken in the draft with the possible exception of Marlion Pickett.

If you look at the highlights package of Pickett, you can see why Richmond picked him, despite his age (27) and despite his current injury which possibly keeps him out for the rest of 2019 - and despite his checkered past.
He has unbelievable freakish qualities.

So what is the reason this draft is being seen as a success and lead to mid season trading of listed players.

Surely most of these rookies could have been picked pre season or pre 2020?

Most wil play in vfl sanfl neafl or wafl exclusively. Which didn’t actually need a mid year draft to happen

There you go. Great recruiting by Richmond.
They picked up 2 players for nothing in February and May. Both drafted into a side already with depth.
Sydney Stack was a revelation and great value for most of of the year.
And Marlion Pickett was a great risk - 1st game and amongst the best players in a premiership side.

God he looked so clean. That's quality recruiting. Take a punt on the talent and watch it flourish. We seem so conservative of late.

We were once the leaders in being innovative unfortunately recently we seem to be very vanilla

Hope this strategy changes this offseason and we start taking some risks. That’s what late picks / rookies are for

When you're on top with a great best 22 and strong depth you've got the luxury of making some risky recruiting moves to potentially extend your window or improve the strength of your list in the now.

Hawthorn took a risk with Dayle Garlett in 2013 that potentially could have made our team even stronger at a time when it was already one of the strongest. It obviously didn't work out but it also didn't matter as our depth was such that we could absorb the failure. We currently don't have the list quality or depth to afford to potentially throw away a second round pick.

Pickett proved nothing , his team was dominating all game so easy to stand out st Richmond

Really?
I thought he proved a lot.
Recruited at 27 with an injured hand. Only plays in the VFL side in the latter half of the year.
Best in ground in the Richmond VFL premiership.
Then in the rare position of playing his first game in an AFL grand final.
Admittedly the opposition was weak, but he showed impressive coolness, composure and skill and couldn’t really have done more than that. Named their 4th best player.
IMO, that’s an achievement worthy of some praise.

Astonishing he looked right at home in his first game being a GF. Consider Finlayson, who had a cracking year, had 1 touch for the day.
