Can someone enlighten me how carlton were trying to steal a unsigned player lol bombers did it in the rookie draft getting a zone player. Imo bombers should be banned from drafting as thats stealing apparently šŸ˜‚

I do note the hawks are gonna sign a long term ruck type.which is a odd way to go about it as he will take years

This seems more likely. Carlton had 2 list spots left after the Docherty injury and we invited Gibbons and Cottrell to train on the 12th December.

We potentially had another spot on the 20th December when Pickett went down, then another when Bugg walked away.

We may have looked at Stack in December but he chose the Tigers.
Yep, likely SOS had a crack before he decided to train at Richmond.

He comes from a volatile background and Dimma and Clarke have put him under their wing. Not sure he would have worked out the same way at the Blues.

In saying that, heā€™s got a LONG way to go.

Haha....when has a player been drafted and then mentioned that they want to be at another club.

Nathan Buckley, for starters.

Obviously Richmond was Stack's club of choice, but at least one article suggested the signing was brought forward to curtail interest from another club, without naming Carlton.

Nathan Fyfe went out of his way to avoid being drafted by Freo. There are many other examples.

It's not like there is any reason Stack wouldn't want to play for Richmond, certainly not suggesting that, but Fyfe didn't exactly come out and say "bugger" either when Freo was drafted. Was the whole "Pavlich is a great role model", "love staying in WA" etc.

Not sure what we're debating or why, but certainly Fyfe isn't an example of a player not spitting out the regular cliches about being excited by being drafted by the club he was drafted too.

Sydney makes 11th hour bid to fill final list spot
https://www.afl.com.au/news/2019-03-07/sydney-makes-11th-hour-bid-to-fill-final-list-spot

SYDNEY is set to make an 11th hour bid to fill its final list spot on Friday, flying two state league players to the Harbour City for medical screenings.
Just seven days out from the pre-season supplemental selection period (SSP) deadline, South Adelaide's Hayden McLean and former Magpie Sam McLarty will jet into Sydney.

With confirmation third-year key defender Jack Maibaum is to be placed on the long-term injury list after rupturing his ACL, the Swans have the ability to replace him prior to March 15.

It has led the Swans to enquiring on both ready-made talents to bolster their key position stocks ahead of the season.

The Swans can also opt to add a second player to their list should they choose to place Kurt Tippett on the inactive list, an AFL spokesperson confirmed.

Like Hawthornā€™s situation with Will Langford, the Swans re-rookied Tippett for 2019 with the knowledge that he wonā€™t play.

While the window to have players such as McLean and McLarty train at AFL clubs closed last week, the Swans will attempt to learn more on the pair when they meet on Friday.

Overlooked for the past two drafts, the 20-year-old McLean this year crossed from Sandringham's VFL side to the SANFL to further his football resume.
Captain of the Sandringham Dragons in a TAC Cup side that featured Andrew Brayshaw, Bailey Smith and Max and Ben King, McLean also represented Vic Metro in 2017.

Then playing as a key forward/ruck in the VFL last year, the 197cm prospect trained with St Kilda ahead of the National Draft before he missed out on being drafted.

McLarty has this year signed with AFL production line club Williamstown, fresh off the Seagulls having four players join AFL ranks ahead of 2019.
Michael Gibbons (Carlton) recently joined former Williamstown teammates Ben Cavarra (Western Bulldogs), Lachlan Schultz and Brett Bewley (both Fremantle) in winning AFL spots.

After two seasons on the Pies' senior list, McLarty was cut at the end of 2018 while holidaying in Italy.

Playing as a defender as well as forward/ruck in the Pies' VFL side, the 197cm McLarty failed to make his senior debut under Nathan Buckley.

The Swans' list management team was due to meet on Thursday ahead of the pair arriving in Sydney on Friday.

Should McLean or McLarty be selected by the Swans, they would join Gibbons and eight other players to be selected via the SSP.

Richmond pair Sydney Stack and Mav Weller joined Shane Mumford (GWS), Zac Clarke (Essendon), Corey Wagner (Melbourne), Keegan Brooksby (West Coast), Tom Campbell (North Melbourne) and Matthew Cottrell (Carlton) via the new rule.

While McLean or McLarty would be placed on the rookie list like the other nine players, they all have the same playing rights as any other AFL player.
Hawthorn is also weighing up the decision to use Langfordā€™s spot ā€“ or put Tom Mitchell on the long-term injury list for the season ā€“ and add beanpole ruckman Ned Reeves.

Should other clubs with vacant positions ā€“ Carlton, Gold Coast, GWS and Melbourne ā€“ opt not to fill them before March 15, they can carry over a selection to the mid-season draft.

I think the article dies indicate the initiative is actually working to this point. It was always going to have limited scope.

It gives lower ranked players an opportunity and clubs a chance to mitigate bad luck through injury loss at the wrong time.

Jonathan Marsh to the Saints. I think heā€™ll be a good pick up. Was surprised no one was into hom draft time.

Also thereā€™s an account on twitter suggesting saints also into ex blue Sam Rowe. Not sure on that one.

I received this same info earlier today.

I certainly don't claim to have good sources but this came from an ex-Blue who played with Sam, so could be correct...

Reckon it's great to see Carlton/Richmond as the preseason unfolded and then Hawthorn/Syd/Gold Coast/St Kilda and Melbourne use this rule.

It's crazy that teams had to finalise lists in November and couldn't replace guys who were injured over summer or hold a list spot for a guy to show he's worth it with a big summer.

I wouldn't be surprised to see more clubs do it next year

Going for an inside mid seems like a really smart move from the Suns. Sure Thompson is a defender and you guys are very weak with tall defenders right now, but was even worse for you in the inside mid stocks.
Should visit the Suns board to read the discussions on Will Brodie. They have a good young inside mid there, but he's in Dew's dog house. And that's after the Suns let Lyons go in the off season to give their young inside mids more opportunity.

Sadly Brodie was in the bottom group of 2km trial , and he is not Rayner forward/mid . He is only good in one position ,if KPP like Lukosius and Corbett are ahead of you in 2km time trial , something is wrong no matter how good you are as inside mid . Lyon is a great example why Brisbane use him as a forward in JLT .

Where did you get the idea that Brodie is in Dew's dog house? There were probably 10 coaches last 2 years Brodie interacted with. At present, Brodie has 3 development coaches and 2 midfield coaches to work with and of course there is a match committee. For sure it's not Dew's only decision, quite contrary. Right now he is behind Bowes, Fiorini, Miles, Swallow, Miller for inside position. He may also had interrupted preseason. He will get opportunity once season progresses. Hopefully, he adds strings to his bow as beside great contest work he struggles outside or forward and can't play HB.

Yes, I watched Brodie to do extra running after Lions practice game and he was pathetic. Academy players were killing him. I still hope he had some niggles during preseason otherwise his endurance is terrible.

If I am not mistaken Powell get JLT games because he is in Top 5 in 2km trial. Dawson emergency also in Top 5. You can compromise a bit as a forward , engine room like midfield no way .
