Training Pre-season Training 2017

Was a warm day for training and they were kept out on the track for near on two and a half hours so it was a solid hit out fitness wise if nothing else - the last 20 odd minutes were a series of run throughs at about 80% full pace and was pretty gruelling after a longish session with the balls

No shows / part time participants :

•No slycanui or Cole as expected due to injury
•Petrie and shuey were both absent presumably because they were at the AFLPA meeting. That's a guess but it makes sense.
Waterman was also missing as far as I could tell - certainly didn't see him
•First year players (Rotham, Gorter, Rioli and Watson) did their usual reduced minutes as their training loads are managed. Didn't do the end of session running
•JK and Venables did the initial stretches then went to the top oval and played with each other. Bayok joined them after a goal kicking drill
• McInnes and giles did some light jogging before doing light scale ruck work in some full field drills. Didn't real exert themselves as they recover
• gov, butler, lecras and hurn weren't involved 100% but did a lot more than previous sessions and were in the main group rather than ostracised like before
•priddis and mutimer did everything except the runs at the end so they're all but back to 100%
•nelson had his lower leg looked at by a trainer at one stage but went back out and rejoined. Looked fine but was held out of the runs
•as mentioned Barrass didn't do the running preferring to flex and do some handballs
• Mitchell waddles when he runs and only does about half of the runs. Is always trailing the last group

Going out so will post a bit more about some individuals later

"JK and Venables did the initial stretches then went to the top oval and played with each other."

Probably just having a laugh too.

Yeah he's pretty much just ******* about. Very cheeky. Fun to watch

Must be a lot of effort to tailor training to each individual.
How many staff are on hand?

There's a small army

Nico looks after the first years almost exclusively
There's a fitness guy with giles and McInnes telling them what to do then goes off and does something else, checks back in from time to time
The rehab group (jk and friends) have a trainer with them
The line coaches - hickmott, graham, cox and Pratt look over their guys
Longmuir runs a fair bit of it overall whilst simmo wanders around the middle with his whistle barking out encouragement or expletives as necessary

Then there's assorted waterpeople, trainers, ball collectors etc

It's a long long way removed from the clubs beginnings when they were operating out of the boot of a car

Not really with what they did this year with a members-only scarf or beanie.

This year's pack is a huge upgrade on previous years :thumbsu:
But I guess some will never be satisfied. Or have never operated a computer.
Well some of us older members used to get Caps and our kids got footballs . All we have had for years is a pin a lanyard and a book the whole familky has to share . But no some of us old bastards arent happy

Other random notes :

• Mackenzie is training really well and is back to full fitness. Doing the runs he was in a group with masten, gaff, lamb and sheed who are all strong runners. Was always at the front of the group. Definitely wants to win his spot back
• hill continues to improve his fitness
• Mitchell's hands are so quick it's not funny
• Matty Allen is making some good strides forward and for a strong build is covering the ground pretty well
• it's a pity Tunbridge can't stay fit/has no football brain because he's an absolute bull. Really powerful body that would be ideal for crashing through packs
• Bayok is truly dual sided - did the goal kicking drill and kicked left and right footed without any noticeable difference in action. Does lack penetration in his kicks though as he was struggling to make the distance from 40m out
• Rotham has an awkward ball drop. Doesn't seem to affect his open field kicking but his set shots at goal were on the ugly side. Can also see it being an issue in congestion
• lamb continues to impress. Can't fault his work rate
• Gorters set shot goal kicking was surprisingly good - 40m out on a 45 degree angle shots were going straight through post high

For the benefit of Jootube who wants the eeyore report, bearing in mind it's preseason so nobody is training badly as such :

• Masten hasn't been particularly noticeable so I won't say he's struggling but there's a hungry group pushing their claims
• ditto Schofield who has a battle on his hands to ward off Mackenzie
• Nelson needs to improve his kicking if he wants to play in the midfield
• Brophy is a nice bloke by all reports but he's a class below the rest of the group tbh and with Gorter, Rotham and Watson all brought in playing a similar position he's got the job in front of him to last beyond 2017. From a list balance pov we delisted the wrong cat b rookie
• karpany copped an angry spray from simmo after ******* up a kick in his right - "if you can't ******* kick with your right, use your left ffs"
• Yeo still has decision making issues - full field drill working through a zone and he was taking too long to pick an option

Finally, there was more urgency in today's session and Simpson was pushing them harder. I think they've been easing into things until now but that's over - heard him say something like it's only going to get harder

Venables will spend much more time in the middle and generally on-ball, if the Shueparisons are anything to go by.

In any case the kid is a couple of years off I'd imagine. Be nice if he comes on quick (like Willie) but if it takes a little time that's not necessarily a bad thing either.
Comes on quick like Willy?

Rioli is 21 Venables is 18.
