Stewart is a reeaaaaal stretch. One step away from including Hawkins because he rucked in the forward line (a massive part of Geelong's ability to score).

Two simultaneous thoughts should be going through the brains trust at RSEA:

  • How do we improve our midfield?
  • How do we succeed with the midfield we have?

Our midfield looks fine now. I think our outside brigade is probably one of the best in the league. Geelong's last flag had a super pared back midfield but run and rebound all over the ground and used intercept and rebound as an attacking weapon. Richmond won three flags barely ever winning clearance.

Plus Lambert was running through the midfield- #46 in the Rookie Draft (Sincs #1) - gun when Richmond were at its best & constantly overlooked by all the other teams. As I recall Pagan was calling for Clubs to draft him and Richmond finally took a punt.
Yep, very underrated (Edwards too)

Ah Chee was a speculative pick. Daniher and Dunkley were free agents so they didn't have to give up anything for them. Sure they gave up a bag for Cameron and Neale. Cameron wasn't a superstar when they got him, I'd say its pretty similar to the way we got Henry in terms of where they are at in their careers, although they are very different players.
They did some fantastic business on all fronts, but 70% of that grand final team were drafted players.
I can't see us trading for a messiah figure and praying they'll take us to the promised land, we've gotta have enough good players as it stands to prompt a decent player to want to come and play for us.
If one or two of our kids can propel themselves into stardom then it'll take us a long way.
Daniher I'll give you, Dunkley they traded a first and second for. Ah Chee cost a second, Cameron a first. They weren't speculative picks or cheap. No one is disputing they haven't drafted well to get where they are, but they don't win the flag without trading top picks for top players.

We're going through the drafting stage now and will need to make some hits trading or in free agency in years to come or we won't get there.

Couldn’t agree more with Cro19. The Brisbane list was of course built on the draft (everyone’s is) but most of the recent premiers have topped up with trades and free agents.

Lions with the ones you have all mentioned plus the yet to debut Doedee, pies did lower cost trades with Mitchell, hill. Geelong brought in danger and Cameron. Dees paid up for May and Lever, tigers brought in Lynch for their second two flags.

I see a lot of worry on some club boards about giving up picks too early to trade in players (freo fans were having an aneurism about the cost of Shai Bolton) but draft picks are overrated.

People on our board were whinging about the cost of bringing in Neale in the trade period in 2018 and wanted to wait until he was a free agent. Morons.

I watch a bit of the Cats vs Hawks game yesterday, and I feel like our midfield has a way to go, although the addition of McCrae will be good, I think we're down a little on sheer breakaway mids who can get the first touch and run out of the middle.

Still plenty of question marks around our midfield.

MaCrae is going to be a good get but not for long. Steele doesn't seem the eilte midfielder he was at his best.

Dow and Clark are probably at their peak and aren't getting much better.

Phillipou is the one kid I'm extremely confident will become a quality mid. Outside of that, Windhager and Garcia may be good mids but not definite.

Travalgia is a gun half back that we want to become a mid. Pretty rare you see elite mids that haven't played that role as a junior. May happen but I wouldn't pin my hopes on it.

We still need to be adding top end quality to that list.

travaglia played quite a bit of mid as a junior and really exploded in the back half of his senior year there as well

I definitely think there are short-term question marks with Pou's injury and uncertainty around our younger guys, but long-term I think we can be pretty confident

Steele was elite at the start of 2024 before he copped a knee knock. Then post-bye, when his knee was a bit better, he started dominating again alongside the returns of Dow and Clark

Long-term, we only need a midfield setup of 4:
Pou will be a permanent fixture
Steele will be around for a bit longer
Macrae will be here for 2-3 years - in that time we'll get a mid from another club to be his successor
I'm quite confident from watching training that at least one of Windy/Garcia/Dow/Clark/Hall/Wilson will be long-term guys for us in the engine room

Then you have guys like Travaglia/Tauru/Boxshall who might be ready when Steele retires

And I'm sure we will continue to attack trade and free agency for mids

Training Report 18/2/25
Went to training today - first time in about 15 years!
My 2 cents worth:-
-The Viking is running - stayed out when everyone went in. Good style! Glides across the ground.
-Wood and Sinclair running laps - Wood picked up the pace later in the session doing what looked like 200m sprints.
-Marshall running on the far side, was running around cones - testing that pelvis ?
-Clark and Garcia running laps together.
- No sighting of King ??
-Ross the boss came out about an hour into the session.
-#28 Barrat impressed me - good size and neat skills - was doing extra running afterwards
- Boxshall impressed me as well.
-#40 Hall, I can see what everyone is saying - clean below his knees and nice skills. Looks fit.
  • Stocker looks fitter!
  • I thought today was pretty standard session - maybe they have backed them off with the intensity? I thought I would have seen some match sim.
  • Heath looks a good size.
  • Cordy one on one did not impress.
  • Hill and Nasiah just jogged laps then went inside - in good spirits - didn’t look injured.

Hopes rest on Pou, Windy and Hugo.

I reckon most oppo fans and some Saints fans are underrating the impact Macrae will have. He isn't washed, he hasn't lost his ability. The last two years the dogs were prioritising getting games into D graded like McNeil and a few others. Macrae must have pissed off Bevo because if you're picking a best 22 for the dogs, Macrae would still start in the centre for them right now, if he was there.

He's an upgrade on Crouch, he will be a bit of an accumulator but his supply will be better and he will lead by example.

Macrae, Steele, Windy and Garcia (Clark and Jones if required (Jones was playing like a star for most of the last 7-8 games last year) fills me with a lot of confidence. Pou would have been starting in the guts if it weren't for his injury.

a lot of competition for spots.

We win 14 games and finish 7th

I find it hard to see how we regress given how much went wrong last season.

Losing Dougal will challenge our ability to handle the genuine 2m forwards however Ross has built a career on ensuring dirty/slow entries.

It also opens up a spot for Hammer in the back half who could we show he’s our CHB for the next decade.

Thanks for the report.

Was Windy out there? Someone mentioned he was running laps last week.

The Pou ahead of schedule

I think at the end of season 2025 we'll be able to see some clear improvement from 2024, but that doesn’t mean it won't be utterly torturous in getting there.

King was in the gym at the end of the session. I don’t know how much work he did in there.
The Viking looks like an impressive athlete.

I was watching the 2016 gf the other day, he was massive in the last quarter. Bloke is a gun, really can't believe we have him could still have many good years ahead too.
