Agree with all this. Our biggest issue is our best players are all aged 28 and over - all the A graders you've mentioned besides NAS are 29 and above and Wilkie is turning 29 in 3 weeks. Hill and Wood are also over 30.

This is why we need the younger core coming through to elevate and support them while they have 3-4 years of good footy left. If we time it well it can work, but we need things to go right. It's a better position than in 2017 when we were on the up but our only A grade player was Jack Steven.

And probably need to have a run at a serious finals campaign before they start to drop away. Collingwood and Geelong both have recent flags with similarly uneven list profiles.

We at least have a huge pool of A grade to elite potential coming through. I'd say that we have a pile of guys with massive internal growth left.

Nas, King- still tracking like the elite FFs, Phillipou, Wilson and Owens don't take much imagination to see as top tier players.

Windhager, Henry, Garcia, Hastie, Schoenmaker, Sharman, Caminiti, Keeler etc all have high level potential.

Then guys like Dow, Clark, Stocker, Carrol, Hall, Byrnes, Moose, Collard just have to become solid consistent players with a couple going up a level and they are easily the type that can hold together a core.

Then we have. all our new kids that I haven't included but Tauru, Trav, Dodson, Barrat all look like they could be best 22 player in the next 4 years.

If we have a decent injury run there is enough there to be a very good side in the next few years. Most players will play until their mid thirties if they are a high level player.

If anyone is going to training today, may you please give an update on the rehab group and if they are increasing their running ?

Also an update on if King is out there ?

I’ll be grateful 😃🙌

Spot on.
We are walking a very thin tightrope.

We desperately need the likes of sincs, steele, wilkie, marshall, hill etc to ALL remain at their current level for at least the next 3 years.

If father time or injury catches up with any of them and they slow down (even a bit) in the next 3 years; our list is going nowhere- even if the kids like pou, wilson, owens etc become the guns we hope they will.

Joey Montagna spoke about this with Jake from SaintsTV

We need the younger brigade to "bridge the gap". Joey mentioned 2004/2005 prelims as examples of this where Roo/Dal/Ball/Lenny were genuine stars at such young ages which brought the club into contention as guys like Harvey/G-train etc were still around. Then the 2009/2010 era was when the older guys had retired and the young guys were in their primes as superstars of the comp

We need Nas/Pou/Owens/King/Wilson to step up in 2026 at the latest and replicate what Roo & co. did to give that Steele/Wilkie/Sinclair group a shot at a flag. Then we transition into a new era supported by the entire group of young guys topped with the Dempster/Schneider/Gardiner/Ray type trade-ins to have another push. Then ideally you just keep repeating the process as generations of players pass, just like how Geelong have done it

exactly, started as another half back flanker too (for a quarter), I remember cheering his first uncontested mark lol, crazy to think how good he was, it's only now im older can I appreciate how bloody lucky we were, how rare players like him are :*(

The fact Rooey kicked 70 goals in 2004 and won the AFL MVP as a 21-year-old CHF is mind boggling.

Not saying we need a player to make that jump - although it would be nice - but shows how lucky we were to have talent performing that well at a young age.

Gehrig kicked over 100 that year as well.

Training report 20/2/25
Roh, Sincs, Wood, Tauru running laps
Doogs arm in sling on the bike in the gym, Paddy Dow next to him.
Henry in handball drills. Running confidently.
Boyd, Caminiti in full training, same with Barrett.
4 in Rehab, run throughs and kick to kick.
Lively handball drills to a leading man. Stocker very vocal. Very clean. Barrett, Said and Jones lively.
Group splits up to forwards, mids and backs. Caminiti with the backs. Mids and backs split up half with bibs.Forwards kicking it about.
Henry starting in mids, with Travaglia Dodson, Hall in bibs, Macrae, Steele, Boxhall, Clark Boyd in black training tops. Boyd v Doddon then Heath, Henry in the thick of it. Hall winning the ball.
Split into two groups, across ground non contact ball movement. Naz smooth mover for black team.
Great spoil by Dodson for team purple. Ross stops the drill to talk about positioning.
Impressed with Stocker, organises the backline, lots of talk, directing the play.
Great spoil by Hastie for team purple.
Team Orange changes with team purple. They are attacking, team black defending. Stocker with great spoil for team black.
Hill out of defence to Hall who catches and handballs to support in one action for successful attack.
Hill being used to open the angles for leading support runners out of defence.
Now purple is the new black as the go head to head with orange. Henry joining in in all drills so far. Purple defending.
Jones dynamic and lively, Hugo intense as ever, can't believe Barratt is 18.
Good to see the relatively healthy list, only Tauru, Dow, Pou and Howard not available for R1. Blokes like Henry unlikely but back in full training, Rehab guys doing ball work, Roh doing some light ruck work, all running strongly. Wood, Roh, and Sinc should be available R1, depends on how underdone the players mentioned are.
Half ground, forwards v backs, no Max King BTW.
Henry, Clark, Barratt sits this out and off the track.
Half ground match sim.
If we can get Arie to even gop afl standard, we have an absolute weapon. His boot is not just huge, but his 30 metre passes into the corridor are laser like accurate, hit Macrae on the tit, who uses his class to find a leading forward.
Hammer with the forwards now so I have no idea.
Hard running high energy 10 minute drill. Higgins looking good around goal.
Finishing off with bag work. Here are some shots.

Think Milney kicked around 50 in 2004 as well. That's over 220 goals in a season from 3 forwards. :eekv1:

Imagine getting over 220 goals in a season out of King, Membrey & Higgins. They combined for 85 goals last year as a comparison.

Not sure how we didn't win the flag in 2004 with those sort of numbers.:sadv1:

Great report. Thanks for the detail.

I hate to say but it seems highly unlikely King will be right for round 1, given how close we are and how limited his involvement has been in the last couple of weeks

In Round 8 2004 v Collingwood we kicked 21 goals, all from the six forwards (Gehrig, Riewoldt, Koschitzke, Hamill, Milne and Guerra). Impossible now.

Really a non presence. A lot of development to do. Never involved enough. Seemed only time happy was when jumping on the bag.

Not one of my favorites. Don't know what the coaches and List Manager saw to give him 3 years on a contract. Another year of development and maybe he clicks at sometime.

If anyone is going to training today, may you please give an update on the rehab group and if they are increasing their running ?

Sinclair, Wood, Tauru and Marshall in rehab. King not sighted.

That's a bit disappointing. Hopefully he sorts himself out. Lots of talent.

Another crazy thing about those stats is the low disposal numbers. Only two of our players collecting over 20 disposals. Look at stats today and plenty of players are racking up low-impact 40 disposal games.

Football is now basically just basketball with kicking.

Pass the ball around the arc looking for an opening, until you see one and go in close for a shot.

Whereas it used to be basically netball with kicking. Ie- passing to one on one matchups in set zones.

If I started watching football now, I don't think I'd like it as an elite sport.

Too bland and sterile.

If the interchanges dropped I think we'd revert back to more positional play and thus more one on ones. It makes for much better viewing and we might see a few more 100 goal seasons.
