Pre-season training...

Okay - so I have a late start on a Monday morning... and I happened ;) to be driving past Freo Oval on my way to work and guess what??? There was some action out on the ground!! So what else could I do, but stop for a bit (and get waaaaay behind for the rest of the day mind you) and have one of my "little squizzes".

Only 8 guys out on the oval, doing some sprint work, then they ran a few laps - then I had to go, so not sure what happened after that.

1. Hase - no strapping on his knee, looking lean, was leading the pack in the lap running.
2. Gilmore
3. Peake
4. Ibbo (took his shirt off when they started laps.... *swoon*... ;))
5. Brock
6. Pratt
7. Connelly

and the surprise...

8. Chris Smith  Obviously must have been told he'll be redrafted if he impresses on the track during these next few weeks.

So there ya go. :thumbsu:

Many thanks Mrs Purple ,hopefully Peake is going to make this his year if he/s getting on the track early and hopefully putting in those extra yards and fitness he needed last season:thumbsu:

also went down for a look this morning. Haze looks great hopefully luck is on his (and our) side this year. Could not believe my eyes when i saw smith out there, wonder what the go is. As IP said the guys took part in a 3km time trial, smith came in first and Peake 2nd about 25m behind him. Haze looked really good running and then doing some kicking afterwards no real sign of his knee limiting him.

Yeah I left after the first lap, so I missed out on the whole run... Hase was leading it out when I was there. Chris Smith is quite the runner - didn't he lap a couple of guys in the first 3k time trial they did last pre-season??

Wonder what the story is with him. Seems strange - they could keep him on the rookie list for another year without needing to elevate, or they could just elevate him to the senior list and be done with it. Odd that they would delist a rookie then ask him to keep training...

I'd say he was delisted just in case there was a better prospect available. If there isn't, redraft him. No harm done and nothing lost.

I think he has always been in the top few runners since being at the club.

It is very strange, must be a few at the club who see something in him

When you delist someone then they are available to evry other club. So if there is no-one better than him, and he is selected by another club, then we have someone not as good as him. The logical problem is that a rookie list spot is hardly a big commintment, and delisting but letting him train implies to me that he has attitude or fitness issues. Show he is over them and he'd be considered.

Indeed. But obviously if we are willing to take that chance, we've already made the call that he's no superstar and we can afford to risk him going to another club.

he has definately shown that he doesn't have fitness issues and from reports the kid has a great attitude, i think it is just a case of he hasn't quite cut it this year in the wafl and they might give him another chance if there isn't anything better available in the drafts.

This is my take on the whole saga of Smith. Freo have delisted him and the only reason they are having him around is to help out the other not so fit people during the pre season, like a running mate. With his supreme fitness he will push the others to keep up, which will get them just that extra bit fitter, this all however is not what has been said to him. He thinks that by training the house down he might get re-drafted. Little does he know he is nothing more than the rabbit at the greyhounds, boound to go round and round and round and round.

Treating players like that even if they are on the lowest rung of the list won't be a good way to encourage loyalty, or an attitude of "playing for the jumper". I would be ashamed of the new leadership at the club if that was actually the case, and don't believe tha it would be. at the very least, the door would be open a crack for him.
