Looking forward to it too. Hoping to get down to their one and only game in Adelaide - not til Round 7 though. Although looking at the fixture, I may also be able to get down to the game against Gold Coast at the Swinburne Centre, as I’ll be in Melbourne that weekend for the AFL Grand Final. I’ve yet to see them play live, so another steep learning curve begins.

Its team photo day.

The girls have been on a pre-season camp, been in training since June -- we are about 5 weeks out from the season, should we be concerned that Sheridan is still isn't in the country yet?..

Depends on the reason she is still to arrive.

Yeah.
And I suppose its not the first time the irish girls have started pre-season late. I think in the first few years, they didnt arrive until a few weeks prior to round 1.

Could well be still doing all the running and general fitness work, might even have someone helping her with some kicking and general footy touch work. Time will tell. The longer she remains away, the more likely her start to the season being delayed becomes.

Wasn't this originally in Geelong?

Given how ordinary the surface looked down there the other week, they may be trying to minimize games played there so it’s pristine when their afl side hosts home finals there.

COLLINGWOOD skipper Brianna Davey is on track to play in the season opener against Sydney despite battling an ankle injury during the pre-season.

Davey has spent time in a moonboot this winter and on Thursday completed a training block indoors at the AIA Centre before supporting her teammates from the sidelines.
The 29-year-old was still an active participant despite her limitations, helping direct traffic from the boundary during drills and providing encouragement during breaks.

Davey also had ankle issues last year, carrying the injury through chunks of the season.

The club confirmed she is still "on track" to play the Swans in round one, a Friday night match on August 30 at North Sydney Oval.

After an injury-hit 2023 that included just two games due to foot and knee issues, dual All-Australian Ruby Schleicher looked particularly sharp in defence alongside veteran Stacey Livingstone, with the pair entering their ninth AFLW seasons.

Jordyn Allen looks to have had a strong pre-season and was pushing up well on the wing, while Brit Bonnici was carving a path through the middle of the ground.

Small forward Grace Campbell was limited in her training and only ran some laps, while Lucy Cronin and Charlotte Blair were in non-contact vests.
Fellow draftee Georgia Clark was firmly ensconced in the forward line with a spot in attack now on offer after Nell Morris-Dalton was ruled out for the season due to a back injury.

Irish rookie Muireen Atkinson (pronounced "Merr-n") is set to line up in defence in her debut season and showed a clean set of hands, while former Blue Annie Lee will join her in the backline.

Recruit Kalinda Howarth is only an outside chance to be seen in the early rounds of the season after the ex-Gold Coast Sun had an arthroscope on her reconstructed knee, but she has since been flying through her rehab.

I don't think ive been excited for a pre-season/season to start like this one. With our new recruits and talent from the draft

Big second year for Lucy with no Livingstone to support her. Does she now take the best key forward?

Hey Jen2310 any training updates as ground level please?

Ash is one obviously I'm keen to know about.
Is Bri on track?
And also, despite Frederick now settled in the ruck and having a presence, who is going to be her chop out and pitch hit as 2nd Ruck? Fowler and Evans both been delisted IIRC? .... but I am not aware we have any targeted ruck that are being groomed which is a big worry. Love to hear people's thoughts on this.

-------------

And in other news, geez it's really disappointing the AFLW / Collingwood can't update players pages. There's no excuse. We want the comp to strive and be more professional yet simple admin tasks that can be done by an intern just don't get done.

I'll head down one session this week and check things out.

The girls did an intraclub tonight, AFLW x VFLW. They played 4 quarters, it was really interesting and fun.

Some things I noted:

  • Georgia Clark who was a young key forward last year, is being re-made into a defender (assume because of livingstone retiring)
  • Tarni White looks to be playing in defence.
  • Ruby is playing in the midfield
  • Sabrina spent 99% down forward with Imogen Barnett doing the rucking. Not sure how I feel about this. I feel like Sabrina is too slow for the forward line. Didn't we realise that and it didn't work?
  • Amber Schutte seems to be a preferred defender for Team A
  • Ash Centra kicked 2 goals and spending her time CHF with bouts on ball.
  • Violet Patterson seems to be in Team A, and she's quck, running down the wing.
  • Eliza was on team B, but she did change after half time, like a few others. it was mixed up after a while. She's got some competition for a forward role now.
  • No Sign of Bri.

Was listening to ABC this morning and they were discussing loss of $50 million in AFLW. Think it was Nathan Bourke that said they shouldn't see it that way as the AFL still give $35 Million a year to Brisbane, GWS and GC men's = $100M.

He said that it also doesn't help with the times the women play, sometimes mid week when the supporters can't get to games. Also didn't include the growth in female football from juniors to seniors and how it has helped local football with finances.

He said that they shouldn't use the word 'loss' as they don't consider the donation to the AFL clubs mentioned a loss.

Thank you Nathan Bourke.

Thank you Nathan Bourke.

The term "loss" is very harsh during the establishment of the AFLW league. Was always going to take years to achieve real relevance in financial terms, especially given the fragmented way it was initiated. While I don't disagree with the sentiment of Bourky's comments, AFL men's teams can point to the money they generate through both TV rights and game day earnings to justify the distributions to clubs who aren't pulling their weight. The women's comp needs to do better but will continue to struggle unless there is a fairly drastic change in scheduling
