Anyone one down at the club know how coffields going? Seem to see and hear about hunter Clark a bit but not much about nick. How do they stack up in terms of talent and who seems the more ready/likely to play games next year?

Coffield embracing AFL life

New St Kilda recruit Nick Coffield didn’t have to wait long to find out how tough an AFL career would be.

Taken at pick eight by the Saints in the recent draft, this year’s Northern Knights skipper was pushed to his limits in his first training session.

“I shot myself in the foot,” he admitted. “I didn’t eat or drink enough and mid-session I had a bit of a spew. Other than that, it’s been good. I’ve made sure that I’ve been preparing for sessions well now.”

While it was a tough start for the 18-year-old, he’s quickly thrown himself into the AFL life and is thoroughly enjoying it.

He said that while the workload was a little tougher than he had expected, it wasn’t anything he couldn’t handle.

“I’ve absolutely loved it and all the boys have been so welcoming,” he said. “I’m making the transition from being an unemployed 18-year-old to a footballer.

“Growing up, what kid doesn’t want to play AFL?”

Coffield is training four to five days a week and said he was slowly getting used to the long hours. Still living at home at Eltham adds a few more hours to the day.

He’s getting up at 5am to make it to Seaford in time, meaning a lot of early nights.

He said that once the club moved back to Moorabbin, he might look at moving out of home to cut the travel time.

Coffield is training in the midfield group, despite spending the majority of the TAC Cup season playing for the Knights at half-back.

He averaged 21 possessions for the Knights this year and averaged 22 possessions while playing for Vic Metro at the national championships.

His maturity and leadership skills were something that also stood out in his last year of junior football.

Long term, Coffield said he saw himself as a big-bodied midfielder.

As well as learning St Kilda’s game-plans, Coffield is quickly getting to know his new teammates.

“I didn’t really know anyone before coming in,” he said. “I’d met Jade Gresham through the Knights, but that’s about it.

“I’m trying to sponge off everyone … it’s about trying to get knowledge off them.

“I didn’t know what to expect at training – I’m just giving it everything.”

Coffield said his focus was on making sure he did everything he could to be the best footballer possible.

While an AFL debut next year would be a dream, it’s not something he’s thinking of just yet.

“I’ve living in the moment and trying to embrace it all,” he said. “We are in early December, and come March or April, if I’ve been stressing about when I will get a game, I would be insane.

“I can’t wait to be in the midfield and get some games. It’s every kid’s dream.”

I kept saying at the end of last year we should try him on the wing. He's got some pace, bravery to hit the packs hard at speed, loves a one on one contest and can spread and at times gets himself into trouble running ahead of the play to make a link up option. If you get him further from defence what was a liability can become a strength.

You forgot he kicks the ball a country mile. With space on the wing he could be damaging by foot.

All those years back, he was the kid who kicked out to Spencer White for that celebrated goal. Must have gone 60 metres to hit Spencer.

Not the worst idea I have ever heard. Because lets face it, we have enough HBF'ers to sink a battleship

I have a concern about that

If he moves onto the wing, who does he displace? Newnes, Sinclair, Billings and Acres all play on the wings, so does he take the place of one of these guys?
So if we'd got Gaff who would have made way?

If Newnes is the weakest link it means we are tracking pretty well.

Sinclair is unlikely to be displaced if he continues like he has. Billings will play somewhere. Probably Acres as well.
I "think" I'd rather have Newnes in the backline than Savage but i'm not sure.

Weakest links for me at the moment are - Savage, Newnes, and who-ever plays as the small forward , Lonie, Long etc, and i'd have loved to have had a Newnes or Savage in 2010.

I reckon Savage has moved ahead of Newnes on late season's form this year. A bit concerned about Newnes' decision-making coming off half back.

It's a really interesting question. The thing with gaff is he just runs all day so I'm not sure we'd need a winger on the bench to help him out.

We've got some serious depth now albeit a lot of it is potential. But think about it this way, when was the last time we'd have two top 10 picks running around in the reserves (clark coffield)?

I can't even remember if billings played with mccarrtin there

Discounting Freeman for obvious reasons here given he was a trade

Newnes massively underrated on here! Do yourself a favour and rewatch the tigers game... and while you’re at it pretty much the whole season. Oh and the last 2 seasons... we’ll be going extremely well if newnes ain’t making the 22
ven better idea watch what happens when gets injured in games our backline shuts down

Yep. I feel like Newnes is one of those players you have to watch live to really appreciate. Cracks in hard, never gets beaten one on one and always follows up with huge second efforts. He would be a nightmare to play on. His only knock would be disposal inside 50.

Mav on form is easily our least impactful starting 22. Then maybe Webster/Savage.

Just shows how good our depth really is.

I'm not buying that the 26YO who has played plenty of VFL has moved past the 24YO who has not played a VFL game since 2012. Not in the selectors eyes anyway.

While its true he is a consistently good player, he also didn't perform as well this year as he did the previous season and didn't improve in the same way some others in his age bracket did. The game where he was concussed this year did show how important he is to the side, but he would also want to show some improvement in his game next season otherwise he could be spending a few weeks at Sandy.

Newnes has two top 6 and 3 top 8 finishes in the B&F inside his first 6 seasons and is rated in the top 100 in the comp.

If he's anywhere near being squeezed out we're going bloody well!

Was IMO in career best form prior to his mystery disappearance about half way through the 3rd quarter of our first game v Richmond this year- when he was on track for 40 disposals, but then didn't play the last 45 or so mins of the game, and from that point on he was never the same, so may have been carrying whatever put him out of that game.

Didn't see him training the other day and wasn't in the top 5 of the recent time trail, either (meaning he prolly didn't run it), so maybe something's still up.

Yes. And especially the Collingwood game. Watch Newnes and Treloar and I think you'll be delighted with the comparison.

Won't be a popular comment, but on the basis of current impact rather than potential GOATness I think you have to add Acres to the list of weakest links.

Then in terms of most likely to miss games I hope you will have to consider Steele, Dunstan, Armo and Stevens as unless they can genuinely fill a role other than pure Inside Mid I'm hoping only two of them play - in that case there's likely to be a fair amount of rotation because of the standard of the replacements.....

Especially the game in which he got knocked out early in the piece against Sydney. Our whole backline drive was nullified as they put more work into Roberton.

Newnesy is a GOP, a dependable foot soldier, solid citizen - nothing against him but he's not more than that at this point and one has to wonder if there is genuinely another level to his game. With over 100 games under his belt it is fair to doubt it.
True but so’s Geary, but what he brings to the team is massive even though he doesn’t star. I’d rather someone with potential make way then someone who has done their role consistently for over 100 games.

Sure but this is about competition for spots which is increasing more for Newnesy than Geary.
Newnes won't be the one making way for others initially, he plays his role but there's no real room for complacency.

Newnes, he's ben worse since moving from the backline.
Very much disagree with this. Moved out of the backline about 3 years ago and has comfortably played his best footy on the wing since, in particular last year and the first 2/3 of this season.

2014 was the last year he played down back and he was nothing special there, averaging just 20 disposals per game and even having considerably less rebound-50's than he had from the wing this year.
