Predict how good will Tomic be...?

On the news, they said he was complaining about playing past his bedtime.

Surely, SURELY, he was taking the piss and just sarcastically joking.
When Lleyton retires, he will surely hand over the mantle of Australia's most hated sportsman to Tomic. What is it with Australian male tennis players being tossers? We won't mention Klein ...

I can honestly see Tomic being the biggest tosser tennis player Australia has ever produced (yes, bigger than Newcombe, the Poo and Hewitt). He thinks his shit dont stink. He is ready and willing to make flimsy excuses for his losses. He totally disrespects the best national player. He is unsportsmanlike. He simply acts like a complete tool, even accounting for his w***er dad.

Screw Tomic. I honestly hope he goes nowhere now. If he has that kind of attitude at 17, at 25 he will be an unimaginable prick.

What I take from his comments is that in his honest opinion, pitting an inexperienced 17 year old against a top 20 player in the world in a game starting at 1030 and finishing beyond 2am is absurd.
What I take from his comments is that he rates himself a little too highly. If he wants to be a Andy Roddick and be outspoken in press conferences, he should wait until he's someone relevant. He has already caused more controversy than most players do in their entire 10 year careers.

Here we go, the whiners at it again.

There are brats, and then there are brats. McEnroe was a likable brat, as was Safin. Roddick is far worse than Tomic currently is and he is enormously popular. Quit the self-hating guys, that's far more un-Australian than anything Tomic has done. Disgraceful.

Tomic is definitely top 50, goes without saying. How close he can get to being our next number 1 will depend on how much he improves his mobility. The jury is out but assuming he can get his movement to a respectable standard....top 5.

For ****s sake, this thread isn't about how big of a knob he is, it's about how good he is going to be.

I reckon he will at the least make a few Semi's down the line, if he ditches his Dad and works hard on his serve and forehand.

He has a decent all-court game, seems adequate at the net and has terrific defensive capabilities.

When he matures a little more physically and can match it with the big hitters he will improve rapidly IMO, just needs as much experience as possible in the Grand Slams.

Yeah, yeah... Hewitt's a douche, Djokovic' a douche, Roddick's a douche, Nalbandian's a douche. - Get over it! It's tennis. The most competitive cut-throat sport there is. There's no time for making friends or doubting your own abilities. Certain personalities are better suited for success than others. That's why Hewitt has 2 grand slams and Guccione struggles to stay in the top 100.

i don't think he will be the next great hope for australian tennis and the experts shouldn't be heaping this on him. he needs to improve in nearly all aspects of his game and look too distance himself from his father for his career

No shit, this would be the case of most tennis players under 23.

Serve seems a bit weak, other than that looks pretty good. Has the crazy father that will make sure there be no outside influence (like Hewitt).

Im sick of people being so critical and getting sucked into media crap. He made a comment about the match being on too late (which it is) and the media absolutely run away with it. Anyone who actually listened to the press conference or knows anything about the kid and has heard him speak would know that he's not a brat. And anyone with any sense should know that they should not be playing at 2am.

The fact that they Aus open officials wont fix the scheduling because it doesnt fit in with Channel 7's desire to play Today Tonight is a joke. They should be starting it earlier, its not just bad for the players but also for the fans. Its highly inconvenient to have to stay up til 2am to watch the end of a match. Unfortunately the authorities just crumble to channel 7.

Anyway all that crap is unimportant. We should be talking about how good he is. He's a 17 year old Australian, probably the best junior in the world in one of the worlds biggest sports. In any other country in the world people would be loving it. But here the media are just so driven on writing crap which will sell and apparently they can make money by hating on a young kid who is trying to acheive a few things.

I think his game is quite good, he seems quite unique. Possibly similar to Andy Murray. No shit he will have to improve. And obviously he will. The next four years he is only going to get better as he grows towards his prime age.

Geez lets give this kid a chance and not start hating on him, he is representing Australia and he is going to be a gun. He will learn how to handle the media w***ers with time. His on-court temperament is exceptional and he is obviously sort of controlled by his dad who seems like a tool. The quicker he can get out of Daddy's reach the better.

I concur with this.

Don’t get me wrong I’m no apologist for the kid and his father who I believe is the on really responsible for all the stupid acrimonious horse manure happening outside the tennis court.

But for goodness sake I’d imagine none of the other 3 self-respecting Grand Slam organizers would have scheduled an unknown pimply lowly ranked teenager for a prime time slot, not even if he represented the country the event was held in.

It reeks of utter sad desperation and cultural cringe that a network and the organizers of a prestigious sporting event have to pin their ratings hopes on a promising (but still very much raw) up and coming teenager.

Because that’s the main reason why he was “gifted” this slot, it certainly had little to do with doing him a favour or else his match would’ve been first up.

It may come across as a whinge but I think Bernard and his dad are absolutely spot on in this instance. Whether he should be grateful for the opportunity is beside the point, scheduling his game with Cilic after the women’s match as idiocy at its finest. It basically killed off any chance of winning, however slim, before the game even started.

Other pain-in-the-arse no-hoper teenagers may be partying till the wee hours of the night but it’s not at all surprising that a kid genuinely interested in reaching the top echelon of his sport would be going to bed fairly early every night to stay healthy and achieve his dream

I'm sorry sir but Cilic had to play in the exact same conditions so I do not know how this is a relevent point?

Cilic is a mature pro and a potential Top 10 player with 4 or 5 years of top flight experience under his belt so putting him on at this time slot makes perfect sense. Any complaints coming from his mouth could be correctly labeled as a whinge.

Tomic on the other hand is an inexperienced kid starting out yet to prove himself on the big stage, he has no business being on the main tennis court at 1 o'clock in the morning. Any responsible organizer worth his salt (especially considering he originates from the same country the even is played in) would have not contemplated going ahead with this lunacy for 1 second, no matter how tempting in regard to the ratings.

Regardless of who is playing it shouldnt be on at 2am. I dont know any other sport which is played at that time, it just isnt good for anyone. Maybe he shouldn't have said anything but who cares, his overall point is correct. This whole problem all stems from one evil corporation: Channel 7.

LOL, match started at 10pm, it was just unlucky for Tomic it went for 4 hours. The organisers have no control on how long the match goes for. If you're selected for a primetime slot, you know you have to play later, prepare yourself for the later start instead of whinging in your post-match press conference, I mean really most people thought he was no chance of getting a set. Those comments from Tomic disappointed me, but defiantly won't hang it on him, he's only 17.

bingo

the match started at 10 remember not 2 am. if this bloke wants too compete with the best, he has to realize he will play in all sorts conditions. in new york they go well past midnight in night matches for crying out loud. it was a 5 setter and at night people should realize matches are going to go long into the night with any players
