Predict how good will Tomic be...?

Im sick of people being so critical and getting sucked into media crap. He made a comment about the match being on too late (which it is) and the media absolutely run away with it. Anyone who actually listened to the press conference or knows anything about the kid and has heard him speak would know that he's not a brat. And anyone with any sense should know that they should not be playing at 2am.

The fact that they Aus open officials wont fix the scheduling because it doesnt fit in with Channel 7's desire to play Today Tonight is a joke. They should be starting it earlier, its not just bad for the players but also for the fans. Its highly inconvenient to have to stay up til 2am to watch the end of a match. Unfortunately the authorities just crumble to channel 7.

Anyway all that crap is unimportant. We should be talking about how good he is. He's a 17 year old Australian, probably the best junior in the world in one of the worlds biggest sports. In any other country in the world people would be loving it. But here the media are just so driven on writing crap which will sell and apparently they can make money by hating on a young kid who is trying to acheive a few things.

I think his game is quite good, he seems quite unique. Possibly similar to Andy Murray. No shit he will have to improve. And obviously he will. The next four years he is only going to get better as he grows towards his prime age.

Geez lets give this kid a chance and not start hating on him, he is representing Australia and he is going to be a gun. He will learn how to handle the media w***ers with time. His on-court temperament is exceptional and he is obviously sort of controlled by his dad who seems like a tool. The quicker he can get out of Daddy's reach the better.
Agreed 100%! Great post. :thumbsu:

I really like Tomc, and I really hate the Australian media and most of the public who are so eager to find a new Hewitt to hate, it's pathetic.

Absolutely ridiculous that Tennis Australia scheduled him to be the 2nd RLA night match for the second year in a row. I would've thought we would have learnt our lesson from last year. Why wouldn't we be giving our best junior the BEST chance of winning possible? A day match on MCA with 5k Australians cheering madly for him would've fit that bill.

As for Tomic's game, wow, the improvement's he's made in 12 months is outstanding. For someone so tall who doesn't move overly well yet, he gets virtually everything back. Above everything else his defensive game and ability to remain in the rally was what impressed me most. :thumbsu: He's definitely got a unique playing style, doesn't appear to have a whole lot of power but he can flatten it out when he wants to and he has 'easy' power. Seems to be able to contain the oppositions power which is a great ability. Serve needs a lot of work, not sure about the whole ball toss and technique but in saying that, it's a serve where not a whole lot can go wrong. Needs to get more cheap points with that height though but I'm confient that'll come.

Great prospect, I was so impressed with his performance against Cilic and he's got tremendous upside. I'll be supporting him every step of the way and it'll certainly be worth it because he's going to achieve a fair bit just as long as he continues to develop and work hard on his weaknesses. I do think he's the real deal though.

Cilic's form is also boosting Tomic's 5 set loss to him.

Guess it also shows how bad Cilic played that night, but maybe that was because he just couldn't handle the unpredictable game of Tomic.

Either way, I'm behind Tomic 100%, good tournament for him, 2 wins in 2 years isn't a bad record at his age, and he will only get better.

He is clearly the only hope we as Australian tennis fans have of a grand slam contender over the next 5 years, as Hewitt is finished as a contender and no one else seems to be close to showing the talent required.

I hope Cilic beats DP, makes Tomic look even better.:)

his moron father blamed tilley for his sons loss. bernard blamed the loss on the schedual. never gave credit too the bloke who one. they are both idiot that think their shit don't stink. he was lucky too get on rod laver arena and even get into the draw

He clearly showed that he deserved to be in the draw.

But yes I have no idea why they think he should be on Rod Laver. He should be on MCA, not even Hisense. Keep some perspective there.

Do I agree with his father. No. But do I agree with the schedule no. The mens match should always be first on the night session unless you start the night session at 6:30pm. It is unreasonable for spectators to have to watch matches that finish early the following morning. Was he lucky to be on Rod Laver. Maybe, but if I remember there were barely any decent matches on that day anyway.

This is the big league Bernard, you should be treated equally with everyone else. I don't give a shit if your 17, boohoo past your ****ing bedtime. Hewitt and Baghdatis both played til 4:30 in the morning and they didn't have a little sook. Again, age doesn't matter this is the mens tour, if your play on the mens tour then age is irrelevant. Numerous matches over the years have been played very late, especially a few years ago in 2008, same year as Hewitt/Baghdatis where the heat pushed ALOT of matches back into the early hours of the morning on the outside courts. Don't see them whinging.

My opinion is Bernard should shut his trap, he should be grateful he got to play on centre court when he's still ranked in the high 200's. Blaming the scheduling for his loss is ridiculous- your not that good yet dude. Still got a fair way to go before you can be with the big boys. There are numerous kids out there that are same age as him who have just as much potential as him but maybe with a better attitude. I'd say attitude is going to be the thing that decides whether he will ever fulfill his potential. He's got a load of talent, no one can deny that. But his attitude stinks at the moment. His dads influence isn't helping either, there are quite a few stories around about him and Bernard in his more junior days. Hopefully as he grows older his attitude becomes better.

At this stage I reckon potential top 20. Has some major flaws in his game, at the moment he's getting away with it but against more experienced opponents he won't. Should be changing his style of play as well, needs to play as an aggressive baseliner not as a counter-puncher.

they shouldn't stop a match that has been in progress for some because the clock had reached 2am. the only why could have stopped is because of rain and that would be impossible seeing they use a roofat the aus open or the lights go out and can't get the power back on. the other bloke had to play in same conditions and he's not complaining. this is the seniors now not juniors

The scheduling at the Aussie Open is woeful at times. I lined up outside MCA for an hour to see Verdasco play Koubek. By the time I got a seat, the game was over as Koubek retired hurt. The officials were trying to clear people away from queueing up outside. Point is, the game should have been on Hisense... Verdasco is a top 10 player, instead they had the bloody Williams sisters on Hisense.

Tomic should have been playing on Court 2 or 3... not RLA. It was irresponsible scheduling and unfair to the kid putting that pressure on him.

did they ask the other player? Just because he wasnt ask doesnt mean he disagrees with Bernard. Bernard was asked and he gave HIS answer, not yours, not, mine not the opponent but HIS

just because you dont agree doesnt give you the right thow insults willy nilly because of it (and im taking to everyone posted in this thread as well btw!)

We have another dokic situation where the kid is gong to be shat on because the father is the idiot

If his in a MENS tournament he is treated the same as any other player in the tourny regardless of age.

**** off to Croatia and take your dad with you.

the performance of marin cilic at this year's open should tell everyone that tomic isnt as far away as we all think. It took a very good player in murray to beat him yet arguably tomic had him in more trouble than murray did. Tomic has the brains of federer on the tennis court, its his agility and speed that are the only things standing in the way of being a top 10 player imo. Putting a bit more top spin on his forehand would help too. I would put money on him getting to at the very least the 3rd round next yr. By this time next yr with enough exposure at the highest level this yr he should be more advanced and a better player.

Potentially, so long as the scheduling doesn't cost him as it did this year

I readily believe Tomic will be a very good top 20 or 30 player, but I'm sort of wondering what about his game is going to make him a contender. He's a very smart player but none of his shots are really weapons.

Maybe it'll change as he gets stronger, but I'd have thought if he was going to develop a lethal serve or booming forehand he'd have done it by now.

You'd have thought he'd have done it by 17? Really?

Federer was hardly even playing on the ATP tour at that age. Most players wouldn't have developed a lethal weapon at that stage.

Tomic's serve has a lot of potential imo, as well.

Personally, I think he plays like a woman at this stage and that's what's getting him a few wins against some seniors. They're probably not used to playing someone like him. It could have something to do though with the fact that he's still growing and they don't want to put himon much of a weights program yet.
