Djokovic and Safin obnoxious?

Djokovic is slightly better now that he never loses (who wouldn't be?), but he had a very tainted reputation in the early years.

Safin gets a mention only for his on-court poor sportsmanship. I realise he's quite approachable off the court.

Tomic really hasn't done anything yet to warrant the term "obnoxious". He exhibits confidence I suppose. But it seems like if you're not a complete gentleman like Federer and Rafter, you're the other extreme!

Would Federer and Rafter be such gentlemen if their skills weren't a class above their opposition? Rafter had weaknesses, but he was the best volleyer of his generation - and we've never seen anyone as talented as Fev.

Rafter espescially is a gentleman, but I can imagine it's easier to be the nice guy when you're so good.

Too early to say. However he reads the play really well for such a youngster and has a huge range of shots. He's had an attitude problem in the past. If he can remain on the straight and narrow he could be something special.

Going through the juniors Tomic appeared like a bit of a brat, but he's sort of mellowed now- he's much more likeable.
He was a kid back hen and still is

How many teenage boys do u know don't think they know it all when they are at 14, 15, 16 - not many

Having said that, he's growing up as a player and a person & good on him

Federer was a dick when he was Tomic's age. He admitted being a hot-head in his younger days hence not dominating till he was in his early 20's

His temperament and composure have been excellent so far.

Agassi was a real brat when he was first starting out too. A lot of it comes from being pushed to extremes by a parent. In Hewitt's case he was very much the focus of his parents, to the point his sister was neglected. To Tomic's credit he seems to have figured out being a brat won't get you many admirers quite early on.

Whether I like it or not, Tomic will most likely reach the top 10 in a couple of years, realistically. Having said that, I don't rate Tomic as highly as most tennis fans do.

still prolly a private dick, Rafter was an arrogant twat, Steve Waugh was a serial philanderer on tour... we dont know public faces irl, all we know is a public conception of them.

I find it very hard to believe Rafter was a dick. Where does this come from?

As for Fed, he doesn't take losing well (see him crying and taking away from Nadal's moment in the 2009 (??) AO, but like Agassi, he's grown largely into a statesman of the game.

Looks like a while back I said he wouldn't make Top 50 any time soon. Not sure why I said that, obviously a bad call. Anyway, I haven't seen anything so far that makes me think he'll be top 10 soon. He just doesn't have any weapons. He's having a phenomenal tournament, and it could be a while now before he ever plays a Slam again without being seeded, but top 10 could be a bit much within the next couple years. Hope to be proven wrong though.

he had problems with the Woodies in a doubles game, just because he plays well to the media, and the media sell him as the "sorry mate" genuine australian, does not make it true. Remember him ridiculing Hewitt that he could not be successful with "women", well, this is indicative to the one who is alleging, is it not?

I have some sympathy for the original call, but on showing 30 months ago I do concede to myself.

Who was the young guy, aussie jnr, world number #1, Reid? in juniors?

And Donald Young.

I feel happy (or sad) for Gavin Hoppers kids, cos I know he woulda had them on the PED (read pun intended) so they could make the top line. What he should have realised, that athleticism limits, and a 5'2" girl at 100lbs dripping wet, never gonna tennis player make. Like Donald Young, and Reid(?) their ethleticism is potential limiting for the current epoch of pros.

all the locker room have been talking bout him for 12 months. That is instructive.

I also saw him 30 odd months ago, and the physique was too long, looked gangly, and uncowarded (in bdy moevement), I would have read this like red+black. But this is a player who plays on another level, and the movement, and raw power (lack of) at 16, were obscuring the reality for me. He would make David Foster Wallace write on tennic. 'respek'

If the locker room talks of you, that is the ultimate imprimatur.

And the androgens have rectified court movement, this will never be a weakness. Did Andy Murray have the sublime movement, before he got in the gear, ie. when he was 19, could he move like he does?

With the headband he seems to be sporting the same look as Novak Djokovic

He is not as formidable a player as Novak Djokovic, not yet anyway, I dont think Australia has had a history of 'formidable' tennis players

Top 20 for sure now you would have to say.

At this stage you'd give him a chance against anyone outside of the big 4 on hard/grass.

Wimbledon is obviously going to play a big part in his ranking for this year. And his schedule comes into it to.

He is a bit unlucky that both the Australian Open and Wimbledon lead ins are short. He will probably have to go hard at the US swing like Fish, Isner etc do to get the ranking towards the top 10 eventually. It's hard to see him ever doing much on Clay.
