I know its not half way through the season, but lets get a few predictions for the remainder of the year.

Here's me sticking my neck out.

1. Essendon to be defeated by Carlton in Round 20 on a wet and miserable night at the MCG in July.

2. Collingwood and Geelong to both miss the finals handing Bulldogs and Fremantle a place in the eight.

3. St'Kilda to win all their interstate trips, but no games in Melbourne.

4. Matthew Lloyd and Scott Lucas to seriuosly hurt their knees preliminary final day, thus costing Essendon a place in the grand final.

5. Port Adelaide to win the wooden spoon (big surprise there)

6. Carlton to make amends for last year and knock off a galant Hawthorn in the GF.

7. Nathan Buckley to get suspended after the AFL step in to report him for hitting Darren Bewick in round 22.

8. Shane Woewodin to take out the Brownlow medal ahead of raging favourite Peter Riccardi.

9. Colonial stadium to get their icketing situation right by the cricket matches in August.(maybe a bit far fethced)

10. End of year ladder

Essendon
Carlton
Kangaroos
Hawthorn
Richmond
Melbourne
Bulldogs
Fremantle

Okay, seeing as we're in fantasy land here, this is what I reckon.

Collingwood fall away after a great start and fall into eighth place. Brisbane storm home to pinch second pipping Freo by a point at the Gabba, denying the dockers their maiden finals appearance.

Nth defeat St Kilda to take 3rd spot, dooming the saints to a winless season. In a novel twist, Tim Watson retains the coaching position after the entire senior playing list resigns.

Richmond maintain their recent tradition, and knock off Carlton on Rd 22 to fill 4th place and relegate the blooze to an elimination final against the McGuires.

Geelong and Melbourne fill 6th and seventh, the Demons somewhat fortunate to scrape in after the Weagles lost their entire score in the final minutes of their Rd 22 clash for having 19 men on the field thanks to a field umpire who never made it past grade two maths.

Onto the finals.

Week 1

Collingwood defeat Caaaarlton by a point after trailing deep into time on by three goals. Inspired by Brownlow favorite Buckley's 176 possessions, the pies storm home with Sav Rocca roosting home the winning goal from a kick out after being switched to full back in what is later hailed as a master stroke.

Geelong defeat Melbourne in triple ET after the scores are level at full time, ET and ET2. Leigh Colbert kicks the winner after a shock move back to his old club mid season, following a protracted and bitter legal battle with the AFL and Roos. Colbert cited
the Roos pending move to the QAFL as the reason "I just want to play in a premiership side".

Brisbane easily defeat the Kangaroos (Carey kicks their entire score.) at the Gabba in a lack lustre affair. Denis Pagan later blames the rd22 clash with St Kilda for mentally affecting his players. Alistair Lynch chokes on the football after opening his mouth once too often.

Essendon survive a first half scare against the Tigers, the turning point coming when
Scott Turner attempts a shirtfront on James Hird and instead knocks out a team-mate. After trailing by 3 goals at the main break the Dons win their way into another preliminary final. "I just hope we don't lose this one by a point" says Sheedy in his post match press conference.

Disclaimer: I can't be stuffed working out who'd play who so I tossed a mental coin.

Week 2

The Collingwood revival continues, with the Pies coming back from another seemingly hopeless position against the Tigers to snatch the spoils. Buckley stars again,
though is said to be disappointed at falling short of the ton, picking up only 98 possessions this week. After going out in straight sets the Spud gets peeled.

Geelong defeat the Kangaroos with Colbert holding the dangerous Carey to a single goal. A collision between Pickett and Archer registers at 6.5 on the Richter scale. Mooney takes an overhead mark.

Week 3, The Prelims.

Dons V Pies
Cats V Lions

In a scintillating first half Matthew Lloyd and Sav Rocaa put on a goal kicking exhibition, kicking 17 between them. The Pies eke out a slender lead at 3/4 time after Lloyd is sent off to write 200 times "I must not stage for frees", as Lucas can't quite keep up with Sav. In the dying seconds Dean Wallis marks a kick out at the fifty, balks around the entire Collingwood team and slams through a sausage after taking 16 bounces. The Siren sounds. The margin, 1 pt. This time the Dons in front (about bloody time!!!).

Brisbane defeat Geelong in the other prelim, Alistair Lynch kicking the winning goal after recovering from last weeks asphyxiation. Ben Graham kicks a league record three goals from Full back, later prompting a plea from Lions coach Leigh Matthews to his players "What ever you do don't kick a bloody point or we're stuffed!" Mooney fails to take a mark.

The Brownlow. A four way tie between Buckley, Hird, Crawford and Ezra Poyas. "We just loved his name" one anonymous umpire was quoted.

The Grand Final.

Matthews accuses the Essendon players of taking performance enhancing substances during the press conference. This leads to an all in brawl between both coaches and captains. No charges are laid, an AFL spokesperson is quoted as saying it was "Good for football".

Carlton to lose their court case. John Elliott and Joseph Gutnick get tarred and feathered as the pre-match entertainment on Grand Final day.

Essendon win their 16th flag after overcoming a valiant Lions side by 6 points in what everyone agrees is the best Grand Final since the '89 epic. Lloyd kicks 10 to equal Hudson and Pratt's record. Hird wins the Norm Smith after an enthralling battle with Brisbane captain Michael Voss, each player picking up in excess of 30 touches.

And I'm knackered so that's it.

* Essendon to go through the home and away undefeated. The motivation to keep the streak alive will be enough to give them all 22 victories. A come from behind win against Geelong in Round 11, and a surprising 12 point win against the Tigers to be their closest calls.

* Matthew Lloyd to kick his 100th goal against Carlton in Round 20. Dan24, relieved at finaly getting the chance to run out on the ground after all this time, gets his head on TV, whilst patting the great full-forward on the back.

* Essendon to meet Carlton in a preliminary final. Essendon will be down early, and we will all get that sick feeling in our stomachs. But the boys recover for a 28 point win.

* James Hird and Dustin Fletcher to tie for the Brownlow medal.

* Melbourne to win their way through to a Grand Final, but to come unstuck against the Bombers in the "Big one"

* An important player to be up on a video charge before the Grand Final.

* There will be outrage as members of clubs miss out on Grand Final tickets.(Big prediction, there)

* Port to get the wooden spoon.

*Essendon to win the:A.)Grand Final
B.)Ansett Cup
C.)McClelland Trophy
D.)Coach of the year
E.)Brownlow medal
F.)Coleman medal
G.)Vince Lombardi Trophy
H.)World Series
I.)NBA Finals
J.)FA Cup
K.)Plus the team wins a gold medal at the Sydney Olympics

Whilst I am dreaming ...

Essendon finishes top with 20-2 record (losing to Geelong Round 11 and Kangaroos Round 13)

Other top four are Melbourne, Carlton and (in a surprise) Richmond

The 5-8ers are Hawthorn, Kangaroos, Geelong and Sydney

The wooden spooner is Port Adelaide

the 9-15ers are Collingwood, West Coast, Western Bulldogs, Adelaide, Brisbane and Saint Kilda

The main feature of the finals is the Kangaroos making an impressive run from 7th to the preliminary final where they are comfortably accounted for by Essendon who barely get out of 3rd gear.

Melbourne will be the other GFinalist after an epic prelim win over a gallant Richmond.

And in a major upset - Melbourne will get up for its first flag in 36 years after running all over the top of Essendon who had a 4 goal halftime lead.

Sound plausible ?

Maybe, just maybe ... ;-)

A good year for victorian clubs

It is remarkably even between 2 and 14 and any one of those could join Essendon in the Eight (They won't miss now)

One trend is that Victorian clubs now make up the eight so weight of numbers suggests the top 4 will be victorian, and positions 5-8 at least two victorian.

This means with the new finals series that of the top four, there will be no advantage in first over fourth, as the only built-in advantage for 1st and 2nd is homeground. More important would be to play a team out of form and/or one you play well against

It could be the best chance in years for any victorian club (except the poor old saints) to make the Grand final, even if they do eventually lose to Essendon

In dreamland, the Hawks new era begins in what is now called the night of roo slaughter.

Thompson becomes the feared and unstoppable goliath of the goalsquare. Holland reduces all opposition to cramp induced wreaks at the end of every game. Rawkings takes the hanger of the year every other Qaurter,Harford plays to how well he thinks he can every week. Crawford wins the 1500 for Australia and the triathalon as well from D.Chick, Young gets his shot at the WWF title but is blindsided by the Butcher Vandenberg just as he is going for the peoples elbow...........

sorry really getting lost in fantasy land now

Now way Vanders would turn on a fellow Hawk
biggrin.gif

For the rest of this season for real?

Dons to drop maybe one no more than two.

Brisbane storms home to late charge at 2nd possie after late run of home games at the gabba.

Glut of teams fall between 3rd and 12th. Percentange to decide up to four spots in the eight.

St.Kilda Port and Freo bottom three teams Richmond to be down there to when the players realise they are playing above themselves and injurys to stars cant be covered forever.

Carlton to play in Brisbane again but be elimanted from first week of finals after a 200 point shellacking and half their team passint out in the heat (oops their are those dreams again)

Finals to be a bore fest as most wait for the GF and Ess vs whoever

GF Dons vs Brisbane in a classic with Boris to kick from fifty on the boundary in front of the members after a Lloyd hanger, he cant take the kick because of damage on landing and Boris is nearest according to the umps, when everyone agrees it should have been Lucas.

and Boris lines up and HE

please continue thread here...............

Certainly SB you blokes are looking alot (and I mean a helluva lot) like 1997

It took untill the Preliminary final to finally knock you guys out when I thought you were at best a 6-8 team

but again you blokes seem to over-achieve, even in a average season.

Boris looks up and he........

Notices a lawyer running up to him. Apparantly someone had noticed that Dean Wallis wasn't properly registered as a Essendon player, and all games involving him are now null and void. Essendon are stripped of all premiership points and their place in the Grand Final.

St. Kilda in a Max Hudghton led revival that saw them go on a winning streak that was only ended at a preliminary final loss to Essendon (I KNOW Grendel mentioned that St. Kilda finish bottom 3, but allow me some poetic licence) are now given a Grand Final spot, the game to be played the following week.

The Saints go on to win the Grand Final, Max Hudghton wins the Norm Smith which goes along neatly with his Brownlow and Premiership medals, and this time, he leaves the ground with tears of joy. A nation rejoices and Sainter celebrates with a quiet slab or two.

BA

Yeah, we do look a bit like '97 with all the injuries and that....we just got to get all our players onto the paddock before we can even start thinking about competing with Essendon.

It's a weird season though....quite a few teams seem to go through 3 or 4 game winning streaks before emarking on similarly length losing ones and then switching form again.

Have the Swans turned the corner yet?

(Log in to remove this ad.)

There is no way the Swans are out of the slump just yet.

We were all very grateful to come away with the points last Sunday but it was hardly a convicing performance. Thank god for Ports terrible kicking for goal is all I can say really

But on a more positive note it was encouraging to see

- Greg Stafford play well in ruck
- Adam Goodes grab a couple of contested marks in the goal square
- Jude Bolton continuing his morph into Paul Kelly
- Robbie Ahmat finally starting to fulfill his potential
- Cresswell and Schwass disposing more effectively
- Dunkley taking alot of great marks at fullback.
- Eade leaving players where they are instead of playing musical chairs all the time.

But we still need to concentrate on what we are doing more - and for the whole 4 quarters as well. Silly turnovers and even sillier skill errors cost us dearly in the first quarter but it improved a little after that.

Bloodstained Angel maybe I missed it, but in your predictions of the Final 16 this year you didnt even include Fremantle, or did you expect them to be kicked out of the league before the season was over?
smile.gif

Thanks Shinboner,

Though if we ever win another flag my celebrating would have to include more than just a quiet slab or two! I would love to think what our supporters would get up to if we ever did win one another permiership. The celebrations after the 1996 Ansett Cup was big enough!

I will settle for a win over Carlton and a Max Hudghton Best on Ground performance

BSA and I were the only ones to correctly tip an Essendon-Melbourne GF when these posts were written half way through the year. I also predicted us to beat the Blues in the PF.

I keep on telling people I'm never wrong, but they just don't believe me !

What's your predictions for this season??

Essendon to beat Sydney in the Grand Final. If Sydney don't make it, I at least expect them to finish second on the ladder, or thereabouts. Just got a hunch.

The big faller, will be the Western Bulldogs. Richmond will also FINALLY make the finals. Don't be surprised if the Tigers are well entrenched in the top 8 too !

Well since we've opened a topic that was first done in May, Probably cause somebody wanted a gloat - not naming names.

Did anyone else notice my Brownlow Medal tip?

Was any of that for real?

For one thing Geelong, Hawthorn, Melbourne and Collingwood will all definately make the 8

Collingwood finished 15th. It's amazing how people are so sure of things. Instead of saying they "think" such-and-such will hapen, they say they "know" such-and-such will happen.

Oh well.
