Yeah, but i think that Fev could be one of those types of people who really benefit from being given the oppurtunity to be a leader.
He does seem to be one of the main off field leaders of the club and obviously one of our best players on it, so i think that he deserves a shot at being a leader of our great club.

Don't think I'm bagging Fev out here -it is quite the contrary!

IMHO what is best for the CFC is for Fev to focus on regaining his 2006 form -he hit patches of pure magic where he was untouchable on the lead, spectacularly pulling down anything in the air over any number of opponents, bombing goals from as far out as the centre square on a regular basis, and, when given more than half a second to gather the ball and drop it onto his boot inside F50 would more often than not put it through the big sticks. With the much improved delivery from our midfield, 100 goals is a very achievable return from Fev in 2008 and in so doing, he will provide inspiration and instill confidence into our younger talented players.

If this is leadership, then by all means, he would qualify for the leadership group.

But if being in the leadership group would create additional responsibilities for him to focus on during games, then I would suggest it would do more harm than good.

Judd as the skipper
Stevo as the VC
Murph and Gibbs for the long term
Simmo B/c he earned it last year
and finally, Walker because he may just be ready

apologies to Waite and Fev

Simmo captain :thought he did a good job last year
Stevo vice captain: has earnt it as long as he is on the park
Judd-because he is Judd but has to do the time with us first before gets the big C
Bryce Gibbs- because I don't want any reason for him to go home to SA
Waite
Thornton- some one must be in charge out back

I've gone for experience there, mainly. Guys like Murph and Gibbs will have their time as leaders, and imho right now is not the time. Let them focous on their game.

That was my thinking as well. They've got plenty of years ahead of them.

Stevens
Judd
Scotland
Fevola
Thornton
+ Possibly Waite. He is no longer one of the kids. He needs to start performing consistently.

Didn't include too much youth as I reckon just let the kids focus on footy. We all know that Gibbs, Murph and Walker will eventually be the leaders of the club so there is no point in rushing things.

In Fev hadn't of had his brain implosions I have no doubt he would be Captain right now, he is the most natural leader we have in our team. Yet it's those frustratingly stupid decisions he makes that cost him. I believe after hearing him speak on footy classified late in the season what he said was from the heart and he is ready to step up. We have heard it all before but he wasn't an integral part of the team back then and he is now a huge figure at the club.

I believe if he is in the leadership group it would be better for him as a footballer, when I have witnessed Fev firing (2nd half against dons round 3, absolutely magical) he can ignite our team like nobody else.

It's a 50/50 call at the moment, both arguments have their merits so I could see reason for either.

+ Possibly Waite. He is no longer one of the kids. He needs to start performing consistently.

CARLTON defender Jarrad Waite says the club has a new-found professionalism under Brett Ratten.
The Blues are two months into their first pre-season with Ratten at the helm and Waite said the coach had introduced a punishing fitness regime.

"There were a lot of games last year where we were in it but our fitness dropped off and we ended up losing by a few goals and that really hurt us," Waite said.

"We've got new fitness people and a new weights coach so it seems to be getting more professional which, is what the club needs."

Waite enjoyed his first full season this year after three consecutive years interrupted by injury.

He finished third in Carlton's best-and-fairest and polled four votes in this year's Brownlow Medal.

Waite said he was likely to return to the Blues backline next season after a year alternating between defence and attack.

"As you get a bit older you hopefully get a bit more consistent," Waite said of his form.

"You've got to get mentally stronger but a lot of the boys are getting mentally stronger after a tough start to pre-season."

The addition of former West Coast star Chris Judd and the return of injured on-baller Nick Stevens have lifted spirits around the club.

However it is young midfielder Marc Murphy who is likely to benefit most from Judd's arrival. "It's very exciting to have Nick back and having Chris in the side," Waite said.

"It's especially good for Murph, who has been heavily tagged each week.

"We all know that Nick and Chris can handle the best taggers, so it's looking positive."

While he hoped to emulate his father Vin Waite's feat of two premierships for Carlton, Waite wasn't tipping the Blues for next year's flag.

"I don't know about the premiership this year but it's definitely looking more positive," Waite said.

Fev's leadership evident in: Collingwood game round 7 or whatever it was. Who else was gonna stand up 4 Murph the way he did, hes a roughneck leader we need. Mentally ******ed yes, but he loves the team, he just has a funny way of showing it sometimes.

i say let fev concentrate on running 30 metres in a straight line to mark the tracer bullet like passes from judd (still makes me giggle with glee he's playing in navy blue), murphs & co. then banging them back over the goal umpires head (between the big posts of course).

oh and for what its worth

I just think that as you said that anybody who is capable of kicking 100 goals in a season, (which hasn't been done for ages) is an on-field and off field leader whether they like it or not, because the rest of the group will look up to him and respect him for the quality player that he is.
I guess it all just comes down to whether the club thinks it is best for him to focus on himself or give him the responsibility of being in the leadership group.

I hope Murphy isnt in it. He has had 2 interuptd seasons if you will. First with the Ijuries adn then this year copping the no.1 tag. I think the club sould just give him a year to play footy with no pressure

I reckon Murph in the leadership group's good. He's kinda like the captain to the guys 18-21, being able to relate to them and be closer friends with them than the older guys can, yet also being good captain material at the same time.

Scotty and Thornton could both get a gig too.

Didn't want this to become a "Bag Fev" piece, but his hissy fit last year came on the back on Lance being "rested", and a leadership group meeting to decide who would be stand in captains.
This was a vote by the LG and Waite, Simmo, Scotty and Fev were to take turns. By all accounts at the time Fev was pissed that he didn't get more votes.

Waite went first at Subi vs Freo.......had a shocking game himself and Fev.......well we all know what happened and he got suspended.

Then Simmo stepped up fot eh Dees game and did such a good job the LG decided to leave him with it, and he did great.

The upshot is Fev, after 8 years as a senior footballer, even when he was included in the rotation, didn't have the maturity to behave correctly.

IMO that was his big chance and he blew it.

Too many good potential leaders there now to waste time going back to him.

Waite had a shocking first half -just one of those days where he simply could not get into the game. Had barely had a touch (if at all) by half time.

BUT then showed some very impressive resolve to come out in the second half, kick 5 goals and feature as our best player for the second half!

AND DON'T YOU FORGET IT!!! :p

Cue Pamam comment concerened yet again about my man-love for Waite :p

LOL, yeah true......for some reason the first half is etched in my brain and I think my memory of that game shut down and stopped recording at that point.

I guess the point was that as stand in Captain he had the chance to lead from the front, and by the time he got his own game going we were shot..........but I do concede he had a good second half.

Are all comments re: Fev o.k.?:p

I'm not as protective of Fev, he's got plenty more people out there defending him (and plenty more detractors too) and that's a whole other debate to weigh into.

I've already said why I don't think Fev should be in the leadership group, and managed to remain very positive about him in the process and I'm quite happy to leave it at that.
