Roast Preliminary Final Umpiring Thread

I knew we were in trouble as soon as Freo didn't get the rub of the green on the Friday night and commentators thought the need to mention it.

Of the decisions the one's that really stood out for me:

1. Free against Waite for in the back, despite it being a nudge to the side, whilst in the motion of going for a mark. This was awarded by the umpire off the ball.

2. The non reversal of possession after the high tackle on Swallow who was manning the mark.

3. The Shuey free kick for too high

4. The Jack Darling free against Tarrant for no apparent reason

5. The non decision when Jacobs leg just about snapped in half

Can anyone think of any other shockers that I may have forgot?

Do they also publicise which umpires gave or failed to give free's?
Gibsons non mark call, I have NFI why it wasn't paid.

There is only one way to fix this ( yes it is an issue ) and that would be to have a video replay steward change the decisions from above..this would slow the game down to NFL stoppage levels and would be more of a problem than the bad decisions themselves. Playing at the G in front of Collingwood supporters and Richmond can be just as bad though...the louder the crowd the more it influences decisions by the umps so the real solution is to get your own fans to become louder.
Excuse me if I call you a **** wit..

So its our fault we got molestered because our fans weren't loud enough and yours were?

That's akin to saying the girl was assaulted because she was scantily dressed. Totally ignoring the big issue at hand.

Um is this guy serious, the way to fix shocking umpiring is to get your supporters to be louder and you will influence decisions your way. Okay. I think I have a better solution, What about umpires knowing the rules and officiating accordingly and not worrying about the crowd, the team or the player that they are umpiring to. I think that might be th solution, but I maybe wrong.

When you go to Perth and play WC , you know you are going to have to play with one hand tied behind your back.
Stats back it up , so nothing to argue against. Dosnt happen anywhere else , anyone got a theory ?

Struggling to remember worse umpiring. It really did amount to both a score board and psychological edge for them. Usually I'd say blaming umps is for mugs but if you don't think they impacted the result then you didn't watch the game. Almost threw my pint at the TV at the Jacobs one. At least we can be pretty sure those cashed up bogans will get smashed next week. Actually, I hope they lose with a dodgy free kick after the siren.

Will be watching the grand final partly for the umpiring laughs because frankly couldn't give a shit about the two teams who made it.
Stevic/Margetts/Chamberlin umpiring the grand final would be comedy gold. Stevic the hawthorn lover, margetts- west coast and chamberlin is the sideshow clown between those two. Make it happen AFL and may there be plenty of poor umpiring for both teams next week.

Good, if one of those umpires was crooked so be it. Or incompetent so be it.
But your side was gifted a comeback last night, unlike , as I've said and others have said, like nothing I've ever seen before, the umpiring massacred your opponent , but we'll see you on the MCG next week, and seriously good luck I hope you wish my mob good luck too.

Next week is a new day!

Let's not forget what happened in the Eagles v Hawthorn Qualifying Final two weeks ago. So bad was the bias towards the Eagles in the first quarter - 8 frees to none at one stage - that I actually started a thread on the Hawks board.

How odd that yet again the Eagles seem to be on the nice end of so many dodgy decisions.

WA is insular, secessionist and proudly ignorant - they stick to their own as cashed up bogans are wont to do. It's reflected in fan behaviour at Subiaco, and in the disgustingly biased umpiring. WC much worse than Freo obvs.

As Robert Shaw said on SEN this morning "When choosing the Grand Final umpires I'd omit the six starting umpires from this weekend's games, who've all let themselves down, and instead select the two emergency umpires and the next best of the rest."

Except leave out at the emergency umpire who paid the sheppard against Jarrod Waite, when he was going up in the pack and actually marked the ball . If I have this wrong apologies.

Nope.
They will be instructed to let everything go and pay the absolute minimum.
Will hardly notice them and that's the way it should be.
Will be like chalk and cheese compared to the prelims just you watch.
Won't make me any angrier as I'm not watching it..couldn't give a ****!

As bad as last nights umpiring was, who can remember back to Round 19 2007, when we played the Eagles at the Dome. Possibly the most farcical day at the football i've ever experienced.

AFL Tables tells me 22-19 the Eagles way. Shed some light?

Was pretty similar to last night (free kick count not telling the full story), just some of the most farcical decisions going the Eagles way in the last quarter as we continued to arrest momentum. Cost us the game IMO and probably a home final.
I'm not usually on the blame umpires bandwagon, but it's a game that's stuck with me for a while.

I understand and accept that West Coast were the better side across the course of the game and the umpiring, no matter how poor, rarely affects the outcome of any given game. But that was as close as it gets to being decided by the umpires last night. I accept that they'e only human and they make mistakes but when they result in or deny blatant goal scoring opportunities all against one side then it is incredibly close to having a tangible influence on the outcome of the match.

If it was only North fans complaining then I could accept that our natural bias would be in play. But when the outrage and acknowledgement of the errors come from all football fans, including rational WC fans, as well as the media then I know that we have been genuinely shafted by the umpiring decisions.

Is that right? Did the emergency actually pay a free kick? Are they allowed to do that? I thought there job was to intervene only when there is a brawl or something like that.

It was the umpire out of the play.

Spot on.

Once the mining boom is truly over, they will be left with a giant hole in the ground with a bunch of derelicts in Craig Lowndes jackets wondering where their next pack of Winnie Blues will come from.

No the louder solution is silly. The solution is full time professional umpires, that are not influenced by the crowds anywhere, if the crowd influenced the umpires last night I 'm not sure what your saying , a loud noise shouldn't dim your eyesight, also a n MCG crowd is nothing compared to one sided supporters over here, for example in the GF there will be supporters from all clubs , it happens as well they put nearly 100,000 people in that ground, some will hate Hawthorn not all will be bellowing for the Hawks and lots will be Eagles fans.
The terrible situation we have with the way the AFL has handled the rules and interpretations on the way to protecting heads , which it can't do 100% has made the game confusing and stupid some times, but worse it changes results, that is what the AFL has to klook at , because it is a wide open door to corruption , when that happens our unique game will die.
Plenty of people have been saying for a long time its fixed. I've never believed it, and several years ago had a nasty argument with my sister who said "ah its rigged any way" she is a non football person I was furious , well that mind set is starting to creep into the game from all different people , and the way the greyness of rules is interpreted anything could be happening. Back to the suburbs folks! Last night simply baffled me .
