Agree wholeheartedly with the bolded. And emphatically disagree with the comment by Canada Trinity were "fortuitous".

I think the “fortuitous” comment simply relates to the very good run they had with injuries and the small number players they were required to use.

I note comment about Willingham leaving Blacks. Is he by chance being lured back to Carey?

Adam Bentick, Ross Young , Peter Summers, Andrew Merrington and Chad Jones say "Hi". Steve Gilham, Dan Noonan, Steve Salopek, Jordan Gysberts and Luke Andrews will introduce themselves next year.

Fortuitous with injuries and 'aways'.
To have 14 guys play 18 games and use only low 30's is a great run. With their depth players I think they would have struggled if they had to use 45 like many others.
Not potting the green machine at all. Scribe knew where my message was coming from and headed.
Good to have a little banter here.
Brian is rightly confident. I think St.K has already been enscribed on the 2016 trophy. Perhaps they are even buying caps 12 months earlier this year. Did they get a two hat for one deal?

Not good for Carey. But must add I have read this about Howat for the last 3-4 years on here. He's obviously hunted by $$ clubs every year and eventually stays. Can't imagine in October a decision is made.
Coach also gone. Which means Rice probably as well as they were Marcellin mates. Will need to do some recruiting to stay up in A as they really struggled 2nd half of year and ressies were winless.

Huge losses for Carey with Howat leaving for $$ and Rowe retiring.

Is that confirmed? If so huge that is major blow for the Panthers. Howat has been a loyal servant since his AFL days finished so you can’t really blame him. Based on some of the money being thrown at modestly performed suburban players Howat could command a decent pay cheque. Rowe was still playing really good footy last season so that is a big surprise.

You wonder if this will open the floodgates. I assume they get the hyphen and Cust back from OS but will need a few more to remain competitive.

Heard there were a couple of others down there retiring too. Heard Rice was definitely staying and a couple of Custs mates from Box Hill were likely additions.

I hear Willingham may join his brother at Fitzroy.

Ok, Carey officially in trouble. I hear 6-8 1sts senior players leaving/retiring. For a club that only had 20 to begin with they need to do some heavy recruiting.
Attractive club being in A with great ground, but there's a lot of competition out there where coin is often at the forefront of both chasing club and player.
Perhaps unders premiership players and school will help a bit with new players.
But for me, they are now a clear bottom two favourite.

It's October. Take a deep breath and hold doom and gloom for April. So far Carey, Blacks, Blues, Collegian, Bernies have all lost 6-8 players(apparently-let's see) and the premierships a cakewalk for St Kevins. This season Uni Blues were going to be unbeatable and Carey and Trinity were competing with Collegians for the spoon. Logic would say Carey, Collegians, and Blacks will find losses hardest to cover, but the recruiting drive has barely started if at all.

Agree with much of what you say and it is far to early to be writing off teams just yet. However not sure that Blues were touted as unbeatable, nor did many (at least not in my circles) believe that Trinity and Carey were likely to be easy beats. Most astute judges had Trinity right in the mix while it is widely acknowledged that Carey had the best top end talent in the comp. However quite rightly there was (and still is) a big question mark over their depth. I will say that it St Bernards or Blues lose 6 senior quality players it would hardly cause a ripple. If Carey lose 6 it would be diabolical.

And if any club’s recruiting drive has not started yet I would be absolutely staggered.

The VAFA Representative Team won its first game on their tour of Ireland/Britain defeating the Cork U21 team. However, it's not the 4 games against local Irish clubs playing International Rules that I'm concerned about, it's the last game on the tour against AFL Great Britain. The Poms might want to use it as a excuse to do some rough stuff on the VAFA team. 4 games was enough. What is VAFA CEO Michael Sholly trying to do-create an AFL version of the Ashes?

Extend the junket.

In my view, the VAFA Representative program should consist of Seniors games against SA, WA, the VCFL and the Vic Metro Championship; U23-AAFC games against SA, WA and Tasmania; U19-games against NTAFL, NSW, Queensland. No overseas games at all. Why would a VAFA club want to run the risk of sending of their key players on an overseas tour, hoping like hell he doesn't come back with a serious injury which could derail his preseason training?

Let them go and have a great life experience. We have 3 guys on the trip. Good luck to them. 2016 never even entered into anyone's thinking.

There are more important things in life Jase. Travel and experiencing the world trumps worrying about what you are worrying about here.

No argument that travel and experience is great and injuries can occur with many of life activities so that is not really an issue either however it should not be up to all VAFA to fund such a trip when it is only available to a very, very small number of participants.

I understand that the players self fund most of their trip but there are plenty of other associated costs paid for by affiliate clubs through our annual fees. This is just plain wrong. I have no objection to a group of blokes taking off on a trip and if they want to play some footy then even better but until is comes at zero cost to VAFA clubs then most people will be strongly opposed.

Probably done this one to death and I reckon most here would prefer to discuss talk ‘A’ grade football. I am far more interested in the ins and outs and predictions for next season. If still included to talk about the Ireland thing then perhaps a separate thread?

Geez you must be great fun out on the town Jascave

Jazza's two highlights in his life : 1/ Where the Finals will be played. 2/ The VAFA overseas piss up for there bloated, inefficient staff and hasngers on......

With respect, knowing what I do about one of BF's longest standing VAFA posters, perhaps it's best you take some of his enthusiastic posts with an occasional grain of salt. He sees things a little differently to most of us, and there is a reason for that. ;)

Collegians have appointed Shane Joyce as Senior coach for 2016.
