A nice 6 figure job via 'the network' would be a good guess.
All teams have a list of possibles and friends of possibles that may be gettable. These possibles are contacted and enquiries are made on what they are doing next year. They are asked what type of work or industry they are interested in. The network then goes to work. When a job is found it is then expected that this possible becomes a 99% cert. There have been some who have reneged, but this doesn't normally end well for anyone.
It's a great standard and clean comp to play. This would be another factor.

If VAFA brings in a points system they will find themselves in court facing human rights lawyer Julian Burnside. Players play for free, no contracts, they have to pay their subs and for their playing gear, we aren't the EDFL.

TBH it would suit my club as we have been promoted so under the proposal we get more points than existing A grade clubs, but the bottom line is we don't have a competition like the WRFL where Deer Park spend half a million of players.

Bring in the points

Genuine question - how you think the points system even things up? In the 1st semi last year my club had 19 blokes who went to the school and of the other 3, 2 came through our U19s. The only ‘outsider’ is a country boy in Melbourne for Uni and who only ever played in country leagues and his points score would be at the lower end ofthe scale anyway. Suggest a lot of ‘A’ grade clubs would attract a lower total point’s score than some in D4.

Even a club like SKOBS whose 3 ex AFL players who did not come from the school would be balanced out by the 80% who did.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't the VAFA HQ run a test case across the clubs with Power House in D3 having the most points. I believe Xavs were way under at around 25 I think.

Correct, S Salopek has been at SKOB for three seasons, so he's a 'home club' player. Gysberts hasn't played AFL for three years, so he also doesn't incur maximum points.

I'm excited by the fact that Chris Cain, Sam Critchley, Dylan Conway, Tom Nicholls, Touk Miller, Jordan De Goey etc etc will be 1 pointers.
Under this system we would never get relegated!

In all seriousness, it has the potential to destroy the integrity of the promotion/relegation system. Old Boys schools would dominate the competition year after year. Is it fair that Luke Ball is a home club player for OX, yet if he wanted to play with a club in D grade he's then a 6 pointer? And not get paid for it?

Arrant nonsense.

Perhaps before posting, you should ask him? It's well known within VAFA circles that he has been briefed by a certain long time Premier section club.

The great man is a Patron of an organisation I am involved with, Briza. Placing to one side the likely futility of pursuing the matter he has other matters of much greater moment on his plate than something like this.

Added to which the VAFA have at their disposal many eminent legal counsel whose advice they would take before taking a final decision.

The CEO has made public his view:

“We understand how the points system will work, but we’re not fully understanding of what implications it might have on our competition. We’re really just guessing,” Sholly said.

“At the moment, the VAFA doesn’t have any issues with competitive balance. We’re happy with how we manage our competitive balance through the promotion and relegation system. (But) if by having a points system made our competition stronger and more even, we would participate in it.”

No need for the points system in the VAFA as obviously the vast majority of clubs have either school or junior feeders (some healthier than others) which provide a regular supply of new young players each year. It's really the combination of the stupid $$$ and lack of junior integration in many country and suburban (particularly WRFL and EDFL) clubs which has brought this about. Senior clubs without junior feeders having to sling money at ordinary "footballers" to remain competitive, only to see those same players move en masse to the next club which will pay them $50 a game more.

Not relevant to VAFA structure and culture.

I'm not convinced it is effective anyway. The MPNFL have had a points system for yonks, primarily designed to even-up the comp. The wealthy clubs along the peninsula remain the most powerful and successful.

I would like to see a tightening-up of recruitment guidelines and enforcement though. Bit too lax for my liking. The Milne near debacle being a prime example.

Colourful recruit. Both ink and drink! Let's hope he can be a good role model for the kids coming through....

I seem to recall Edwards coming unstuck a few years back for social activities that extended beyond having a few quiet sherbets!

Kicked a heap of goals for Pines last year so if true he will be real handful for ‘A’ grade defenders. Also means Chopper gets the second best defender, which is also a scary thought.

Xavs usually not shy in announcing new arrivals and this has not yet been published on their usual social media outlets yet. How good is the mail FF?

From the Pines to Armadale in one year, not sure that's happened to many people from that lovely part of Frankston :)
From what I'm hearing several massive recruits coming into A Grade, should be a huge year. Also fair to presume Xavs have had a massive kick in the pants and will be doing all they can to ensure it doesn't happen again.
