The reigning premiers not quite as strong as last season and OX have taken big steps forward. I dont know that the result was a surprise to anyone but Bernies supporters. Blus and OMs close but more due to Blues injuries in my opinion. Nothing from the round changed my view of the relegation battle. Carey in trouble, then Blacks, Lions and OMs duking it out for the other spot.

I don't think it was a surprise, even for Bernies supporters! Under no illusions that losing 100+ goals in the off season would hurt.
Changing my tune, OT's are the team to beat if they can forgo injuries

The gloom and doom predictions about Steinhardt, Hamilton, et al moving on were clearly off the mark. Missing Nicolosi yesterday yet they still comfortably accounted for OC in both seniors and reserves.

Understood OC are traditionally weak in the reserves but I suspect the depth at OT is improving and they should be able to cover injury much better this season. Simply a product of a nice stable playing list with players arriving at the club and staying for the right reasons (to play top quality footy with their mates).

Only one week in but hopefully people will now settle as we can discuss realities, and not speculative projections.

They did beat a side that no one thinks will win more 2-3 games this season. I still have them pegged for 6th-7th.

Think Trinity will be ok (see Maplebet) but yeah Carey are weak. Fell apart last year, have added nobody and lost guns like McQueen, Howat, Bongetti, Reid and yesterday had Smithwick, Sloan and Crozier injured.
Safe to say the side yesterday would be the weakest a Grade side we would have seen in a while.
Trinity will do well to make finals IMO. Xavs, SKOB are certs IMO. De La, Blues and Snowdogs in the mix.

So a team/club which went 15-5 last season, finished 2nd, won the second semi final, and was a kick away from winning the flag, loses none of their young playing list.....but will probably finish in the bottom half of the ladder.

Makes complete sense.

After all, they did get every other side in the competition on an "off" day throughout 2015.

It's a much stronger division this year than last though. It will only take 3-4 weeks to see where most teams are at I think.

I wonder if all these new skobs accounts will go silent now?
2-3 current schoolmates making nuisances of themselves, surprised you would pay any attention to their banter, you're usually better than that. SKOB very good yesterday, De La just that little bit better, well done. Very respectful pre match at the flag unfurling, class act.

Agree SF. SKOB lost no friends. A cracking game that could have gone either way. And if the result shuts up those clowns stalking this forum for a week then that’s a bonus.

Are you able to confirm or deny rumours doing the rounds of T.H King yesterday that Gysberts has quite and Gilham is going os this week for 2 months?

I can confirm that the SKOB runner gave away a crucial 25m penalty late in the last, turning a DLS shot for goal from the boundary into a gimme from the goal-square.

De La's next goal came from a ball-up in the goal-square after a Skobber breached the kick-off line while kicking-out.

Yes I bet the SKOBs runner’s ears are still ringing! Made a difficult shot on goal a certainty. But just a correction - the next goal was a set shot from a mark about 30 out. The goal from the kick out infraction was at about the 30 minute mark and the game was pretty much over by that stage.

Could not agree more Scribe. OT will again be underdogs 16 times this year, and then it will be 'a win for the amateurs' when they play SKOB in the big dance ;)

SKOBS put in a request to the VAFA to unfurl the B Grade flag in front of Xavs.

Gysberts and Gilham. Now that's not good if true. Not good at all.

Not to worry.

SKOBs remarkable depth in playing stocks sees them put 15 Premier standard players (they'd all get a game at OC or OT I hear) on the park at 11.40am every Saturday.

They'll be fine.

We keep hearing Carey have added no-one, but for three quarters, took it right to OT and really should have been closer if not in front at 3/4 time. Given , the last quarter was not great, but the score is not reflective of what was a very competitive game up until then. Carey's pressure and run were causing OT significant problems, however OT's rebounding defence, and slick skills hurt Old Carey every time they turned it over
Carey have certainly added players, just not ex AFL veterans- Cust returning, Thompson ex Box Hill, and a few very quick, skilled youngsters, including one who played at PortM last year, and all who certainly held their own against a very good team that might have been missing Nicolosi, but did have Hamilton in. I also note Fremantle and Rowe are no longer on the 'departed list' that keeps being quoted. On the note of Nicolosi, I would say Smithwick and Crozier would be even more important to Old Carey. Sloan is obviously very much in the same boat as Hamilton, so when he plays, it will be a big bonus.
No doom and gloom at OC, and confident that they will not be holding up the bottom rungs.

Hey Canada,

Where and how do I collect my $480 from maplebet? Following my ton on de la to beat skobs at $4.80 you were offering...

Maplebet always pays Hansie.
Just need you to quote the receipt number you would have been given on depositing the $100 into our account. I can't seem to reconcile the books.
Was very happy with the result btw.
Ring a ding ding...go the bellers.

Canada. You have your ear to the ground. Nobody from SKOBs seems keen to confirm or deny my rumour regarding Gysberts and Gilham. What are your impeccable sources telling you?

Good write up OC.
Whilst I can't see Carey staying up due to the 'hot' year I believe we have this year..your points are still pretty solid. Good luck. Your passion shines through.

JJ, seems that both will be back quicker than you think. Gysberts def hasn't gone. Just working Sats for a while. Back soon.
Gilham only o/s for a few weeks, so back before long as well. Maybe even round 4.
The dreaded Ammos work thing. Hurt many a club. But easier to take than injuries or that mid season travel bug.

So some truth to the Gilham rumour. My mail was until June. The Gysberts rumour is an interesting one. It came from a SKOBs man who told me that he pulled the pin and had quit footy altogether.

In any event the St Kev's network got both these blokes job. You think on that basis it would not involve Saturday work or overseas travel! Wonder if Swisse will do the other A grade clubs a favour and also send Straussy os for while.

Well said. While teams ebb and flow from year to year, there is no such thing as a 'poor' A Grade club. On any given day, while it might surprise, every team is capable of beating their opponent. There's no 200 point beltings being handed out.

With two round to go last year, spots from 4-9 were all up for grabs. Again, in 2016 I think we'll have a couple of teams safe up the top but I think the rest of the pack will be tight.

OM's were being put down as a near certainty to go back down and I thought the Blues would make light work of them but that couldn't have been further from the truth. Blues were lucky to come away with the win. OM's impressed.
