Agree Rooster. We are poles apart.
I just pulled Gysberts out of a hat Scribe.
Could be anyone. That's kind of my point.
At Xavs there have been so many non school players join unders and seniors. Ive loved it and embraced it. And 9 times out of 10 it's been a bonanza for all.

But the core, by a huge margin, has and always will be blokes from the college. They work incredibly hard on that and will never lose it.

If you get more than 2 seasons from Jay Bruno I’ll change my mind;).

No..you have no understanding that anyone can be as a good a buy in as anyone else in all interpretations of buying in.
And secondly...discussing district club junior development has nothing to do with it.
Stick to Maplebet buddy. You are way out of your depth.

Yeah - and my point is that you hope that the players who are recruited into the club buy into the club ethos/culture, as it is in trying times such as now that you need them to roll their sleeves up and knuckle down.

Historically some clubs (eg. old Haileybury, Old Camberwell) have lured ex-elite level players in with minimal connection to the club and been let down in the medium/long term.

Bringing mates of mates in from local leagues or some decent AFL Development League footy is probably going to work better as their footy ego is likely to be less of an issue in a new club environment.

Will be interesting to see how this pans out....

I'll eat my hat if Bruno is there next year.

I have rarely seen a problem with people buying into a club.
Whatevs with an Old Camberwell.
A Grade clubs should back their club, players, committee to be all welcoming and I'm sure you will find that success and good times will flow.

Well hopefully lightning doesn't strike twice. I know a few players/officials involved at the Norwood FC (EFL) which was his junior club. He returned there in 2014 after finishing up at the Kangaroos and they understood he was in for the long haul there.

Fair to say they weren't impressed when he walked out the door at the end of one season.

Don't shoot the messenger.
Who are you to post utter rubbish like this and assassinate his character? You don't know the person involved and to be frank it's no ones business where he chooses to play his football, or not, if Jimmy Jack is to believed.

Chill, Scribe just mentioned his previous club being disappointed in him moving on after one year, there's nothing defamatory in that.

What a load of rubbish some people (not you) have been posting.
David Loats was a 'ring in' to the very same Old Camberwell that was mentioned. 5 years a player, premiership player, team of the century member, senior coach. That worked out really bad.
Stewart Loewe, 68 games, A grade flag, senior coach, assistant coach, school coach.
Tony Brown, similar to Loewe minus a flag.
Michael Blood, no need to post what this 'outsider' did for OX after his AFL career.
Steve Salopek, currently 4th year, premiership player, assistant coach.
Andrew Merrington, blah blah blah.

There's plenty of others, probably hundreds, The debate is ridiculous and without foundation.

Couldn't fault the effort 'mio'. Talent just won out in the end as it normally does. Not a great standard of football generally I thought.
Yep. Saw Qrts 2 & 3 and really the boys really had a crack. However the wheel will turn. Certainly you can tell the difference between A & B!!! Also I cannot have been the only SKOB thinking a certain Ruckman would have been handy. As far as the insider vs outsider arguement goes....been involved when there where basically only ex school boys and with an infux. Prefer a bit of diversity...helps with the winning too.

Heard someone from your august organisation say (think it was the Prez) he had texted him to say he'll be back for 2017. Of course there's many a slip between cup and lip.:)

I doubt Old Haileybury were expecting to be in Premier B for 2008 after topping A grade in 2006.
Winning a Premier C trophy ten years on is a clear example of a club going backwards. At present, St Bernards appear to be on a similar course unfortunately.

As I said - look at the medium/long term result rather than the short term. Also individual awards etc. demonstrate the players were excellent at this level (as to be expected) but query did their dominance and worthwhile individual contribution hamper the development of more modest young players into 10-15 year club 200 gamers.

The Wellers have unfortunately struggled in the bottom half of a Premier C for the last 3 seasons despite the merry go round of ex-AFL players which occurred in the previous 7-8 years They certainly would have expected to stay in B and push to A from 2008 onwards, but that hasn't occurred. Loats coached them for one season in 2009 (got relegated to C from B) despite organising Tim Hazell and Ben Dixon to pull the boots on. It simply didn't work out.

Now both these clubs have difficulties with school connections/junior development. It may be a question of chicken v egg, but I still believe the ideal is building strongly from within, creating a firm club culture which appeals to the sprinkling of recruits who are the cherry on top.

Finally, for every Stephen Salopek, there's a Steve McKee - you have to pick the right ones and hope they buy in!

Has just turned 30 I believe Max. Missed all of 2014 and a fair bit of 2015 following a reco so still got a few years left in him. When he became entrenched at senior VFL level Coburg stopped releasing him altogether. Seems most VFL club do that now and once established they prefer they take a week off than turn our for their local club

Speaking of VFL players, Kenny Ong turned out for Collegians against De La Saturday. Absolute jet. Was squeezed out due to the number of St Kilda players available and Sandy Development League have had 2 byes in a row. Would be a handy addition to the Lions if and when he calls time at Sandy.
Kenny Ong is another Ormond junior

Agree Scribe, but this holy than thou attitude about home grown players is ridiculous. Particularly for schoolboy based / Amateur clubs who don't really develop beyond providing opportunities. If the whole club becomes obsessed with getting in ex AFL players to fix things it is a problem however by and large great to have players down with different perspectives. Hailbury (look at their 19s and ressies) is a rapidly changing school and Camberwell have not been an A section club is my lifetime so they don't really represent a comparison to any Premier club I would think.

Really don’t want to get into another s..t fight with Brian or anyone else but to set the record straight – I was told something at the Rd 1 game at T.H re Gysberts (and Gilham) and simply sought confirmation on here from people who clearly know more about the workings at SKOB then I do.

If we can’t report on or pose questions about arrivals, departures, travellers, injuries etc then we might as well shut this site down. Don’t know why it seemed to touch such a nerve and no offence was intended. Still not sure how it is different to reporting on Cartilage moving to Qld or Xavs guns travelling mid season. The absence of confirmation either way and the fact he was at the ground Saturday tends to support suggestions he will be back in the SKOBs colours once work commitments allow.

In regard to SKOB – absolutely agree that to use 30 players by Rd 3 is a huge ask. As I have said many times I was super impressed by them in Rd 1 and they could have easily have won. While I thought they would find the going tough against Xavs I honestly thought the team they assembled in Rd 2 would account for OMs.

At a pinch I could throw Scotch into the mix too. :D

Looks like they have eschewed all their ex-AFL talent in deference to rebuilding in Premier B using schoolboys and close mates only. This is exactly what OTs did in 2013.

I think they are clearly more relevant to a purely Premier section, discussion.

I will stand corrected on this, but all OS ex AFL/VFL players were from the school. Let Canada get his head around that.................

Didn't Gilbee play at Scotch a few years ago? Surely he didn't go to school there? Scotch are one of the great ammo clubs. I think their issue (small as they are) was their 19s for some reasons have never produced Ammo superstars.

Adam Houlihan, Craig Macrae, you could go on and on. And for every Steve McKee there's a Mark Passadoor.....
As I've previously stated, 6 OX flags in a row on the back of the foreign legion compared to De La Salle having homegrown talent and not winning an A Section flag for more than a quarter of a century.

There is always a counter argument. The last 3 Xavs flags made up almost entirely of players who went to the College.
