Adam Houlihan, Craig Macrae, you could go on and on. And for every Steve McKee there's a Mark Passadoor.....
As I've previously stated, 6 OX flags in a row on the back of the foreign legion compared to De La Salle having homegrown talent and not winning an A Section flag for more than a quarter of a century.
De La have had homegrown talent win an A Section flag in the last 25 years.

They just played for other clubs...:(

Bloody hell mate you are like a broken record. No one worries about where people come from. Diversity at clubs is fantastic but the point is that your natural school or junior feeder is the fabric and it is imperative you get that right.

Despite what some people have said those great Xavs teams were predominantly blokes who went to the College, enhanced with a couple of great additions. I think we all strive for that and Xavs as a club have been able to get the balance right for years. Others, as history has shown, have not.

You seem to be inferring that Xavs is a club full of outsiders. That is absurd and you know it. Once again ...this is not about being a closed shop. Just about getting both your affiliates and networks operating cohesivly.

My club may not have many ‘A’ grade flags in recent years but for a humble ACC school, significantly smaller in students number than nearly every other old boys club in the VAFA, we have sustained ourselves as a strong, respected and viable club in the upper echelons of the VAFA for many years. Taking into account all the circumstances I think you would call this a success.

We welcome anyone from any background but the reality is we don’t have the networks of the APS schools or blue chip uni clubs. We had a decent chop at both Bail and Strauss and thought we were good show for at least one but lost out to the superior networks of SKOBs and good on them. So while we hope to lure a few more non De La people to the club, the reality is that we rely heavily on De La being the club of choice for school leavers. It is not so much a choice as an imperative for us to compete in the higher grades.

Cheers Rooster, nobody disagrees with your De La comments. It's AM and the smiley toungue out faces that are a fraction concerning and ill conceived. He wages his own battle with clouded judgement.
All clubs rely heavily on their own leavers heading to their old boys team. We are all the same.
I just don't applaud Scotch for their new found incredibly successful equal 7th on percentage position in B, whilst knocking a 20-0 club from the same grade. Maybe it's just me...but it screams a little playing the man and not the ball.

I've never been guilty of a 'toungue' emoticon. Although the occasional facetious comment isn't out of the question.

As for clouded judgement I think Rooster is amply demonstrating who that applies too.

Frankly, I think teams who develop from within should be applauded and that it is more likely to bring sustained success and a healthier competition. You see it differently. All grist for the forum mill.

So you think planning, nurturing and building a competitive team predominantly from home grown talent can't co-exist with having a strong network. Odd because I somehow think they sit comfortably together.

I find it hard to believe you are who some claim. Even a failed political advisor and putative PR bloke would be roughly familiar with sentences and paragraphs.

No! I still think you are a secondary student struggling with your last year or so and with plenty of time on your hands. So next time I buy a dimmy from you at Toorak Park I'll be sure to say hello.:p
May be biased but I think of Bernies last year in that mould. 19/22 Premiership players either went to the school or played Juniors/u19s at Bernies. It just happens 2/3 that didn't were very handy players! (Note: Carledge went to the school and people forget Merrington was drafted from St Bernard's)

What about the 3 PEGS kids that were in the side? Are they considered Bernies boys?

Essentially agree but Cartledge was a St Pat’s Ballarat boy. Quiet a few PEGS boys (still is) but to be fair most played unders or 19s at the Bernies and for mine that qualifies as a 'home grown'.

Must frustrate the hell out of the PEGS crew to see some of their best and brightest running around for St Bernards. Having a junior club (from U9s) and strong U19 program is a huge advantage and they do it well.

Collegians had 5 retirees after the last game last year. All went to the school, all played in winning multiple A grade Grand Finals and runners up. Had successes other Clubs dream about.

Total games played.... approx 950. Need I say anymore??

Collegians got a bloke running around from Old Xavs called Matt Jenkinson. Along with ex St Kilda Star Will Johnson, collegians can go okay.

Said before to another post... Jenkinson is a beauty, a good pickup and Will Johnson from the school originaly.

Will Johnson is ex-Wesley, and had played for Collegians before he was drafted to St Kilda (granted it was only a handful of games as he was mainly playing VFL, but he has always been on the Collegians list when not on an AFL one, and before this year had played at least one game a year (from memory) with Collegians for each year he's played VFL.

Rooster, re: PEGS and St Bernards - I think a few of the kids from PEGS have fathers that went to StB and push them in that direction.

I'll bet you wish the fathers, who were De La boys, had similar influence over their sons whom they sent to the APS catholic schools - I reckon there would be quite a few in that boat.

There might well be but I would expect that they would want to play for the club where they went to school, not where their fathers went to school. Notwithstanding that players move on from higher grades to find their level, I can’t think of many De La kids playing at other old boys clubs because their father attended that school.

While there may be some truth to this, I suspect it has more to do the strong St Bernards junior program and pathway into a club with multiple U19s teams, including Premier and seniors in the top grade.

After a few recent seasons without fielding a team it is good to see PEGS with an U19 side this year. The school produces plenty of good footballers. Difficult enough losing them to cashed up EDFL clubs let alone a rival ammo club.
