Looking at the Bernards list from the weekend, if they keep that team on the park then Collegians and possibly even SKOB would be very nervous with 3 rounds to play. Can Bernards survive?

Round 18 could be a cracking finish - Collegians vs OM's and SKOB v Bernards. The top 4 now looks set.

SKOB were ok on Saturday, Blues too good in the end finishing off the game very well. 2.9 in the 2nd half doesn't help either. Shattering to see what looked to be an ACL in the first 5 mins also, cruel game sometimes.

I think the round 18 Blacks v Blues, OX v OT could be ok games too?

Rely on Bernards to upset one of OT or Blacks and beat Skobs. Fighting for survival, they will find something over the final rounds. The team that does finish 9th might even do so with 7 wins. That is very stiff.

Yep sorry mate, I meant in regards to the relegation battle. Those 2 games you mentioned will give us the top 4 going at it, awesome. The Xavs/Trinity clash could decide top 2 so they would throw everything at it. If Blues & Blacks are set then it would be interesting to see how they approach the game.

I absolutely agree with you SF. It is not just about how many but whom and obviously some players are substantially more difficult to replace then others.

My point is there is nothing you can do about so why not just enjoy the opportunity it provides to give some others a chance.

JJ - has the club thought to speak to those running around in Premier B thirds?? Just by looking at the names in the best each week that 4 or 5 of those blokes could walk into the Premier side and be more than very competitive?

I understand that has occurred GY but to no avail. No appetite to train or commit to playing every week etc. Some very good players but most approaching or north of 30.

On another note, while I dont' know this to 100%, I was told that the preference was to go back to having a Clubbies rather than Thirds but they were put in that grade rather than Club XVIII by the VAFA.

Fair enough, Yes some of them are north of 30 and others soon to be, they could hold down key positions, have the pace and football smarts to fill a one to two week gap quite easily.

Maybe they just need to picked and have the decision taken out of their hands.

FWIW who did their knee? Skobber or Uni Blues player?

My thoughts - considering the club is on the cusp of A-section finals, if they still don't want to play and help get them there then I don't think forcing them to play is the solution. Some guys just want to have a social kick with mates, nothing wrong with that.

Valid point, It's just a shame that players of that ability who still have some good quality football still in them choose not to be available when the club would only need them for a week or two?

Most clubs would die for talent like that to be on-hand

Of course, I certainly know if I was still up to it I'd jump at the chance to help the club and play A seniors, but as I said each to their own. Fair old jump in quality from B thirds to A senior too, if they are down there just having a kick they may do themselves some damage if not 'conditioned' for it.

Might seem good in theory but these blokes are miles of playing A grade seniors. Huge step up in class from premier B Thirds to A grade seniors. After a month of training and a game or 2 in the magoos perhaps but right now they don’t have now where near the fitness or conditioning to stand up at this level.

A few are actually not that long out of seniors and even when training twice a week and regularly playing at that level their impact had waned. Could perhaps help out the ressies but not fair to overlook players who have committed, trained and been part of the group since the pre-season.

I think you might find that some of these guys have been training weekly and are not as far off the mark as you think. Still a number of valid points have been raised as to why it's not a good idea and I'm happy to accept them.

I'll just look forward to the boys doing the double over SKOBS after the bye and getting the season back on track

Exactly.......
Hey Carlton I remember (without fondness) how Carey tore us a new one not that many years ago. You were quite kind in your banter so i ask, what has gone wrong this year? Is it just a case of 'one of those years' which happens in AMO footy, especially to the 'minnows' or is it something bigger that will cause the club to tumble several grades?

Back in the day when the ranks of the 'A' grade umps was greater they would consistently rotate them through the lower grades.

Indeed.

And the bye week rotation downwards was always fun...seem to recall a game at Newport when Willy Cys played there one year and Bill Deller telling me how good I was.

Time to pull Benny corin out of the Dino's? Patty mannix looks in good nick - could he help out?

All of the above l think. Our "guns" have all got older and several retirements, interstate moves and transfers of players have taken their toll. It was always going to be a challenging year but injuries have been unbelievable. Not offering excuses but they are the facts. 3 games this year we have lost 2 players before quarter time. Played 42 players this year, 16 of them getting their first taste of senior footy.
We didn't recruit well but that is being addressed. Certainly believe its a hiccup year and not the beginning of a free fall. The spirit among the group is unbelievable, never ceases to amaze me even though there has been some ugly results especially in the 2's recently.
The Panthers will be ok in B and you will see them back in A in coming years. School footy is getting more resources and emphasis which has been lacking in past years.
As for this year my tip is Xavs or Trinity. Trinity were amazing last week with their run and breaking lines. We have Xavs in the coming weeks so l will get a first hand view. To me with a final 4 it doesn't matter where you finish you can win it from any position.

Nice one Carlton. Agree re final 4.
Good luck to Panthers. If you have players on board, school relationship improving and can recruit better than you said you did, then you will get back to A. Getting Rimmingtin, Rowe, Mcqeen or Howat back wouldn't hurt either.
