What would you rather, $1000.00 a game for a year or two. Or a 30 year career opportunity enabling millions of dollars of career income.
This is why we are the envy of all.

So the scenario is. Come to an amateur club , after being on big $ the previous season. Play for nothing , have a 30 yr career off the field & make millions ? Possible , but not realistic!
This means these blokes give up the jobs they have for a better paying career.
Going through the ammo threads of last few seasons & checking clearances etc , the average 'Big signing ' stays a season , some 2 in the Ammos. So they get millions of $$ for a season , sometimes 2? Hope they're good workers !
Your argument is Very flawed & unsustainable.
They get big $$ (maybe it's linked to an outside company eg Chris Judd deal) to 'play Ammo footy'.thats the reality. Gilbee offered HUGE $ to play EDFL with an ex team-mate & had agreed , then back flipped to join Ammos for nothing? PLEASE
To be honest no-one outside of the Ammos even cares if you pay or not , but don't think the 'culture ' of your league is better than the others & that's why you attract these blokes. It's an insult to all the other comps.

You are completely clueless bud. That's exactly what we do, offer better jobs and careers than ppl have now. And sometimes those jobs don't eventuate. Clubs sometimes promise more than they can deliver to land a big fish, and this is why big names sometimes move on. because in effect they were playing for nothing. In the top grades, we have networks that are far, far deeper and richer than any suburban comp sides, and provide careers for ppl far after their footy days are over.

And he's playing for nothing? PLEASE

I will forgive your ill informed comments, as you are clearly unfamiliar with the VAFA and the type of person who generally plays in this comp. Your assumptions are disrespectful to the blokes who turn their back on $ to play with their mates at a good club in a well run comp in preference to reacquainting themselves with 20 new mercenaries every year as the new batch rolls in and the old batch rolls out.

The vast majority of VAFA players, even in the top grades, get absolutely nothing out of it. I have the greatest admiration for players prepared to play for nothing year after year and this tiresome garbage really pi$$es me off. As someone involved for a long time with a strong VAFA club that has never paid a cent to any player I would urge you and the others to please name some names or even better provide evidence to the VAFA. I would like nothing more than to see any club that is getting an unfair advantage caught and punished. But we know it will never happen because all the outsiders ever do is throw unsubstantiated barbs with no proof or credibility.

How any VAFA clubs have folder or been forced to merge in the last 10 years? Zero. How many in suburban or country leagues? Sadly because of the ‘culture’ that exists in paying over the odds for suburban hacks the list is endless.

If I ran a money club it would be very simple, $$$$ for ex AFL and VFL, nothing for anyone else.
Why should some spud get $50 for playing ressies or $200 for sitting on the bench in the ones? No-one will ever match the fabric of the VAFA because we play for the love of the game.

I must say I agree with everything you say Brian.

Merged since 2003 - Prahran, Mentone, Salesian, St Marys, Syndal Tally-ho, UHS, NOBS
Left but maybe not folded Rupo, Bentleigh, Parkside, Brunswick POWER,
Other Clubs have changed names desperately trying to hang on & try to attract players
Bulleen Cobras, Fitzroy Reds to Fitzroy etc

Whoops ROOSTER , looks like you didn't do any research (as I did) before you commented.

Oh & sorry 'Brian Speaking' but your out of touch with reality , 'love of the game' you say please , you name me a young bloke with some footy smarts & a 'mortgage' who's playing for free!
With your leadership it would be the 'Big ex-AFL Stars' , getting big $$ & big paying jobs , I doubt wether Gilbee , Holland etc would be short on a quid. Maybe you should be looking after the young , homegrown talent , the ones YOU call 'SPUDS' , Who give up their Saturday o/t to play footy for clubs like yours.
Very arrogant comment.

Yes fair play VAFA eye but to be fair:

Assumption is a new (or re-incarnated) entity that joined up with Prahran. It was not a merger of 2 VAFA clubs. Mentone Ammo’s took over the Parkdale SFL club and in the process gained access to be a better ground and facilities. Not a merger of 2 VAFA clubs. Salesian lost their ground due to renovations at the school. The merge provided Salesian a ground and St Marys a school feeder (jury out in whether that has been successful or not). NOBS same situation as Prahran. St Pats was not a VAFA club and it is an attempt to form an alignment and school feeder. St Josephs College North Melbourne no longer exists so something of a miracle they have remained viable at all. Again not a merger of 2 VAFA clubs. Uni Reds started life as a Club 18 team. Changed name to Fitzroy because they moved to Fitzroy and are now in B grade (sure all this happened more than 10 years ago?) Chadstone are based in Chadstone not Syndal. Both name changes simply to reflect location.

Rupo to RDFL, Bentleigh to SFL and Parkside to NFL for geographic reasons and all clubs still going strong. Not sure your point there.

Anyway my point being that suburban and country leagues are sadly littered with clubs that have simply ceased to exist. That has not happened in the VAFA.

Enough research for you Steppinup?

It was St Pat's Mentone not "Mentone Ammos" and if they took them over as you say, why would they give up their name? Nonesenical. St mary's and Salesian was a merger-the reasons make for interesting reading but it was a merger just like Parkdale ( albeit not two VAFA clubs)

A lot of words written about $$$$$s or for the love of the game. Does become tiresome, suffice to say the difference of opinion will always remain rock solid.

UB's Gallagher, Gilbee and the other two (forgotten their names) as I said earlier, you may well find they are now working in the AFL. Not a brown paper bag of money on a weekly basis, more a career path.
As for comparing various Comps against each other...........how long is a piece of string??

Interesting Ronald looking back [like old movies] to the VAFA Centenary Year 1992. The following have disappeared [folded/name change/moved league!]
Comm Bank, Fawkner, St Kilda/Sth Caulfield, Parkside, NOBS, Thomastown, Preston MBOB, ANZ Bank, Brunswick, Glenhuntly, Doveton - LOVELY FRIENDLY CLUB, Bulleen United, St Leos Wattle Park, Salesian, St Andrews, UHSOB, Uni Reds, St Pats Mentone, Chirnside Park, FITOB, Boronia Park!
Reference to Rootster!
VAFA is not immune to folding etc

Indeed Eye indeed.

I note wiht interest in your list the reference to St Pat's mentone not mentone ammos!

Perhaps we need the great man Brian on here to provide some input?

Who could ever forget Collaroo Rovers.

Ah, Coolaroo Rovers - the 'club' based on a Pentridge Prison Release Scheme. We played them in their first game at their home ground in Dallas. The game finished about 5 minutes earlier than the final siren with spectators running onto the field for a fight and the field umpire running off and disappearing in his car. Two divvy vans were required at every Coolaroo Rovers game for the rest of the season.

Getting bogged down with semantics here and probably enough said on the money V love argument but to answer the question St Pats did change their name to Mentone Amateurs for maybe a season or 2 before they merged with the SFL club and moved to Gerry Green Reserve. Became Parkdale Vultures - Parkdale to reflect the suburb they played in and Vultures as this was the name/mascot of St Pat’s/Mentone Ammos. Not sure when it happened but reckon it was more than 10 years ago.

Talking of rugged clubs – did anyone have the pleasure of playing St Pius West Heidelberg during their short spell in the VAFA. If Coolaroo Rover were worse than St Puis they must have been seriously bad.

You're right, Rooster, you are getting bogged down.
As for Coolaroo Rovers, I'd played in the bush and the Mornington Peninsula leagues before the Ammos. I have never seen anyone before or since like Coolaroo. They weren't interested in playing footy - just how many punches and snipes they could hand out. Even our goal umpire was knocked out when they disputed his decision. Thankfully we only had to play them twice before they were chucked out. I reckon they had more players reported in one season than most clubs would have in 10 years. All they did was round up some more 'players' from the nick and other areas.

Pines weren’t bad in their heyday in your old league either Rissoles.;)

Rooster is very protective of the VAFA when it comes to player payments or incentives and kudos to him. Things are better now I believe but there’s little doubt incentives outside the love of the game have occurred in the past - other than employment offers. One old boy club used sponsorship arrangements very creatively. The odd refrigerator, telly, washing machine et al would miraculously arrive on the doorstep of a player if they wanted him badly enough. We haven’t always been pristine pure.

The Pines were babes in the woods compared to Coolaroo, AM, even though we did have a shotgun pointed at us when we won a grand final against them.
I have to agree with you that history surely has not been kind to the VAFA with some of the things that have been witnessed in the past. We all have our own recollections. One can only hope that we are moving forward with the right intentions. I know that my own involvement over 30 years has shown that the majority doing the right thing are outweighing the minority.

Could name you 5 young blokes who could be getting paid decent bucks from my club alone. All have bills to pay and mouths to feed but play footy for nothing. Not everyone has the same motivations as you. Doubt you will ever really get it so do us a favour and stop trying.
