Business end of the season and it’s all very quiet on here, the top 4 seem to be locked in but the bottom end of the ladder isn’t! remaining games

Xav’s – SBMT, U.Blacks & Collegians
SBMT – Xav’s, U.Blues & Beaumaris
Uni Blacks – St Bernard’s, Xav’s & Old Scotch
Old Scotch – Carey, Collegians & U.Blacks

At the bottom end it’s between Beaumaris, Uni Blues and St Bernard’s, their remaining games are:

Beaumaris – U.Blues, Carey & SBMT
U.Blues – Beaumaris, SBMT & St Bernard’s
St Bernard’s – U.Blacks, DLS & U.Blues

Looking at the run home this weeks U.Blues vs Beaumaris could be the relegation game if Blues get up Beaumaris is back in B Section, if Blues go down they could be in trouble!

Very exciting stuff!

Scotch haven't got the Top 4 yet... Collegians have to win their last three (very possible) and Scotch drop their last two (also very possible). Will make for an interesting end.

I think Beaumaris will drop with Carey.

Speaking of Carey - How bad are they?

Xavs vs STBM this week will give an indication of where they are at. Xavs win i think they have it pretty wrapped up.

For what its worth, would make Rd 18 pretty big if Beauy win this week as they should beat Carey the following round putting them on 30. Would quite likely mean that St.Bernards v Blues will be for A Section 2014. Could be the case for Bernies anyway if Blues beat Beauy.
The VAFA rep side have this thing all bottled up, it is theirs for the losing....

Agree think Beauy lose to Blues this week, Beauy beat Carey (at home), Blues beat Bernies last round and Bernies to B grade by 1/2 a game! Lot more depth this year than last!!

I like the footnote added to the DLS match report on their website. Have seen this ground twice already this season and could not agree more with the sentiments.

"What was presented for players of both sides today was a disgrace. Several inches of putrid, foul smelling mud but with both teams needing a win for different reasons there was no option but to play.
Despite the best efforts of the home side to find an alternative venue, zero help from local councils or VAFA HQ consigned the game to a surface not seen since the 70s and 80s. While the home side were probably better suited to the conditions I am sure they would have preferred a more sporting deck to play the game on.
Our home ground has rightly had its share of detractors over the years but we have not served up anything like what we saw today, even when bog heaps like this were commonplace. The winning scores in the two Under 19 games played at ‘Dairy Bell’ today were 21 and 27 goals. Our seniors and reserves managed 10 goals between them in two games.
Fortunately we only have to play on this twice a year and I feel for the Blues and Blacks who have this garbage dished up to them week after week. I hope for their sake the University get there act together and present a suitable playing surface, not just for Premier division football but for any sort of football.
Disappointing that an organisation as big and with as many contacts as the VAFA would not make the effort to help the Blues in rescheduling."

I couldnt agree more!!!! It is an absolute disgrace that University serve this surface up as a suitable playing surface for football. It obviously isnt.
The VAFA heirachy should hang their heads in shame instead of sitting on their hands over situations like this.
The old Newmaket cattle yards would be better than what was presented last sat. at University.

Unlike excuses to be in a De La Salle match report...

This isn't about excuses (i am not a DLS man by the way), this is about the state of probably the worst ground in the amateurs. It is not fit for football at the moment, and hasn't been since about Round 9, and no one should have to play there.

It's a farce.

Old Carey 3rds were rewarded for refusing to play on it by having the points awarded to Uni Blacks 3 weeks back, you have to think the VAFA holds little respect for the process available to a team/club that does the correct thing and refuses to play on basis that the surface was unfit and unsafe = points awarded at the expense of a duty of care!

Uni Blacks and Uni Blues both transferred their Senior and Reserves games against Old Carey to Princes Park No.1 Oval in Royal Parade earlier this season (adjacent to Visy Park, home ground of the Carlton Cricket Club), the surface and the amenities, in my opinion are more than satisfactory for Premier football, albeit that the oval is slightly narrow.

I have read the article. Can’t see anywhere where they have offered up excuses. Just a comment (supported by other posters) on the state of the ground. This includes acknowledging the efforts of the Blues to find an alternative and sympathy for both tenant clubs for having this served up as a home ground. I see that the backhander for the VAFA has now been removed so perhaps they considered that in hindsight that was a bit unfair.

Good to see some decent editorial comment. Most clubs can be bothered putting in much at all.

For what its worth, the Blacks v Bernies game has been transferred to EP this week....

Uni Blues in all sorts it seems.

So are Collegians on the back of yesterday’s effort. 100 point loss to a team that have won 2 of their last 10. I see my old sparring partner Ronny backed them as still an outside finals chance just a few days ago. Interested in your thoughts on yesterday efforts Ronny.

I was a touch surprised by Collegians effort (or lack of) to be honest, if they won the finals door would have still been slightly open. Great win by the Sharks, pretty much sent UB packing. I can't see much changing from here on. Carey to B Section with UB

Xav's vs. SBMT
Blacks vs. Scotch (will play each other 2 weeks in a row)

I'll go with Xav's and Scotch to win then a SBMT to knock off Scotch leaving a SMBT vs. Xav's Grand Final with Xav's getting the job done.

Really gone out on a limb there

What happened with Collegians? Credit to De La but still a shock result? Injuries on the day?

"Uni Blues in all sorts it seems"

So the loss by Uni Blacks ( who rested some players : Brock McAuley & Jason Johnson ) to St.Bernards at EP on Saturday has made survival pretty difficult for Uni Blues

I dont think injuries on the day account for a loss of that size. Zimbachs off in the first 5-6 minutes with an ankle, and Sautner off by 5 mins into the 2nd, but that was it. Collegians have always had trouble matching up against DLS, no matter where they are placed or their form.

ST Bernards win makes it much harder for Uni Blues to stay up now. Uni BLues would have to win both their last two games considering their percentage (SBMT at home, and STB at the Pit) and hope for other results to go their way (assuming that Beaumaris beat Carey this week).

ST Bernards V Uni Blues in Round 18 could be the game for relegation.

For what its worth it is surely in Blacks best long term interests if Blues go down. I am sure there were significant reasons for them to both be "rested".

Saunter was still playing well into the 3rd quarter although you would never know it, as I don’t remember him touching the football. As good a defender as Tom Humphrey is surely Sauntner must have been playing injured to have such minimal impact. Zimbachs was injured early but the signs were already there as De La were about 3 goals up to that point kicking into a stiff breeze.

Great club Collegians but to me they looked like a team that have climbed the mountain and just don’t have it in them to climb it again. Rumblings from some of the Lions faithful that training attendances have been poor for few weeks and that those coming through to replace those ageing top liners are not quite up to it. Expect some serious recruiting by the purples in the off season.

This is utter BS that they rested players. why would blacks do that when they still had a shot a locking in a second chance in the finals and second spot on the ladder?

Cause they know they have no chance of winning the flag and the next best thing for Blacks would be to see the Blues go back to B section for a while.
