I see a poll has been placed on the VAFA website asking fans what the best surface in the VAFA is. The Uni oval is one of the nominated options, is this the league or whoever runs the site taking the p15s or do they seriously believe it to be a good surface.

Note HQ was not even placed on the list, didn't even want to support thier own deck. FWIW the junction is leading by some margin

it would def be taking the p.i.ss i am more concerned with the 8% of ppl who have voted it the best.

i did pop in there for a kick the other day geez the new pavilion is certainly pushing for the no.1 in the vafa

Thoughts on the ANZAC Day clash on Friday? Should this game be a tradition for St Bedes and OS or be changed up every year?
Who wins this years clash between the 2 sides with OS having the home ground advantage?

The Junction Oval has its moments as well. I remember one season when OM's were recently in A (probably around 2010), when the ground staff made a complete hash of taking out the centre wicket area and replacing it with normal turf at the start of the season. There was a large step up to the centre wicket, and players were tripping over it constantly the day we played there. From memory there were also large sandy patches around those edges. We had considered calling the game off beforehand.

It's been a while since i played there (so not sure how good it still is), but i always found Marcellin's ground to be one of the best surfaces.

I'm happy for them to keep that as their day. I prefer the traditional Saturday afternoon game. Less disruption.

Made the mistake of leaving the Scotchies v St Bedes game at ¾ time. Thought it was done and dusted by then.

A scrappy game in the first term. Scotch had some good fortune by being awarded a mark resulting in the last goal of the quarter that appeared to me and those with me to have been taken after the siren. In fairness the umpire was at the furthest point from the siren.

The scrappy play on the first quarter wasn’t helped by the unwillingness of the umpires to pay free kicks and by allowing scrimmages to persist for too long. My guess is the duty observer had a quiet word at quarter time as they found the pea in their whistles in the second term and the game started to flow with Scotch looking the better outfit.

Credit to St Bedes for what must have been a strong final term to take the choccies.

For what its worth, Trinity seem to have an outstanding record against Old Xavs. Always jag a victory against them despite ladder positions. Might take the Premier coaches a few weeks to work out how they play but are they a chance for finals action this year?

Early days, but a few trends are starting to appear. Blacks will be good, Trinity look like they could be a surprise and push for September action, Xavs started slow but only a fool would write them off. I think there will be a clutch of teams between third and sixth including but in no particular order Bernards, Scotch, St Bedes, & the Sharks. Collegians copped a hiding but I am loathe to write them off. Old Brighton could be a brief sojourn back to the top grade. I saw De La yesterday and they look like one of the smallest Premier teams I have seen in years. The fact that their twos who are normally very competitive got flogged by the Sharks reserves, and their thirds look like they may have forfeited yesterday, it would be a mighty effort to stay up for them.

Pretty good assesment there. I was speaking to a De La official during the week who told me without a word of lie that of the 50 blokes who played seniors for them last year 30 are not playing this year for a whole variety of reasons. Of those at least half are automatic senior selections. No wonder they are battling. Will be some sort of miracle if they can stay up but I dip my lid to those who stuck around as they must have known they were in for bloody tough season. They are a pretty resilient and proud club and I cant see them down and out for to long.

At this stage i see Uni Blacks being head and shoulders above the pack. What i saw on the weekend from them was premiership football.

I'm not so sure at this stage. Blacks only just got over OX in round 1. In round 2, OT kicked poorly and won by more than UB did. Too early to get a good indication. At this stage last year SBMT were consigned to the scrap heap.

If they can maintain the level they were at on the weekend, they are. I saw enough to put them at the top of my list. Just my opinion, but i've seen enough of their game style now, and it is a winning style of football. The only issue they will have (barring injury of course) is adapting it to their dung heap in mid July/August. That alone will ensure that they drop a few games towards the end of the season, but i have them finishing on top.

I hear xavs only had 7 from their premiership side playing in Rounds 1 & 2 with plenty of big ins over the coming weeks. Look out if they get back to near full strength.

I've only seen one of their games. On the weekend when they played my team. I've seen enough over the years to know when a team has got it together.

Like i said. Just my opinion. Take it for what you will.

I think they had nine from the 2013 premiership playing on the weekend, but still missing some big names like Goss and Waller. From memory i think at least 8-9 of last years premiership side are no longer there, or will spend most/all of the season playing VFL.

I wasn't able to make it to Harry Trott (opted for the blues and the pavvy), but from what I heard, it was a tight struggle for the better part of the game. I've seen the Blues and Blacks play this year and to be honest, the blues look better, albeit against weaker competition.

are collegians seniors going to play night games at harry trott or is it just for fri night 19's/1st 18 at wesley to use?

Its early days with the lights and its only my take on it, but I am sure they would look kindly to hosting themselves to play there or maybe
"hire" it out other leagues and competitions. As mentioned, definitely for the school 1st XV111 etc. Come summer of course, with the sharing
of the ground with the VCA,(co tenent). night cricket matches could be on the agenda as well ???........... Only my thoughts on it though.

De La are shot ducks, years of depth has deserted them and the playing group has had significant changes on top of a new game style from a new coach. They have not fielded a Club XVIII side this year and from reports if they don't get a thirds team up this week they will pull the pin on that also. It's a shame for such a proud club, but all clubs go through rebuilding phases, this one might just take longer than you would expect. No yo-yo this time.

Congrats to big Juice Wintle....
300 BIG ONES FOR LUKE WINTLE
07wintleL11.jpg
Arguably the best player to ever pull on a St Bedes / Mentone Tigers jumper, Luke Wintle this week play’s his 300th game for the Tigers, to become the first player to achieve this milestone for the club since amalgamation in 1993 of Mentone Football Club, St Bedes Old Collegians Football Club and Mentone Junior Football Club. Comprising 267 Senior and 33 Under 19 games, the big man has the honour of never having played a Reserves game. Space does not allow us room to list all of Luke’s achievements over such a long and illustrious career, but suffice to say there are many of them including, 2 Time Club Best & Fairest Winner, 4 times Runner up, many most consistent awards, best finals player, and a best first year player award. Also known as Juice he is a Triple Premiership Captain through the Halycon years of 2006-2008. Luke also won the Jock Nelson and Ian Cordner Medals for BOG in the 08 AND 07 Grand Finals respectively. He was Club Captain from 2001-2008, was also named Captain of the best SBMT Team of the past 20 years, and was deservedly made a Life Member of the Club in 2009. Besides his achievements at St Bedes / Mentone Tigers, Luke has been a Four Time VAFA State Representative, as well as being the Representative Captain in a stirring win over the VCFL at Shepparton in 2011. Luke was also named as the Captain of the VAFA Team of the Decade in 2010. Outside of the above playing accolades, it is off the field and around the club where Luke has really left his mark on all of us. His affable demeanour and infectious nature, makes him a great leader, his knowledge of the game, coupled with a cool and level head, makes him popular amongst all his peers, - team mates and opponents alike. His determination to come back from a “double groin” operation over the pre season to achieve this record breaking milestone just shows the make up of the man, his determination, his love for the game, the club, and his mates, totally shone through as he pounded the pavement for hours to get himself fit to make it, more importantly not totally for himself, but to help and contribute to the development of the younger players around him as we make an assault on our aim to go that one step further than 2013. The family support for Luke has contributed greatly to his success, as it is a bit of a family affair at the Tigers. Lovely wife Kelly and his two young sons, both budding Tigers are his biggest fans, proud parents Margaret and Peter always there to lend and offer support, while brothers Paul and Michael both still playing have enjoyed the successes with Juice through this fantastic journey. All at St Bedes / Mentone Tigers congratulate you Luke an achieving this wonderful milestone in your life, we wish you well in your endeavours today, we feel sure the boys will lift and win the game for you, you are indeed a “true club champion” and more importantly a “champion bloke”

Tips this week:
Beauy v Xavs - in form and while Xavs will be tough to beat, i think Beauy might just scrape over the line.
OB v DLS - just going with the home ground advantage, hard ground to win at
SBMT v OT - OT to hit their first roadblock for the year
Collegians v Bernards - Bernards by 100 points today
Blacks v Scotch - Jamieson back for Scotch this week, plus new players Routman and Bull are starting to fit in nicely. Scotch by 6 goals.
