B Section Premier B - 2013

Super Sunday. The clubs with clearly the most depth and most suited for stay in A grade meet in the first semi. Will Freezer or Salopeck play? Nothing split these 2 sides this year and a neutral ground and good umpires sets up great contest. Really toss of the coin and need to see who is available . Having said that I feel on their day with best sides in the top 2 OT and OB are the best sides . However this season has shown that anyone can beat anyone so looking forward to a great series.

I think its fair to say all teams have played the season with injuries, also giving them extra time to recover coming into finals with Top4 light years ahead of the comp. The depth of all teams is good, with OM having the most players to play all games (4). The Ladder positions of both sides for each club indicates the depth of all teams.

OT - 1st & 7th (not as good, but they don't need to fill two sides for finals now)
OB - 2nd & 3rd
OM - 3rd & 2nd
SKOB - 4th & 1st

This is the strongest and most open B Grade has been for some time, with any of these 4 sides a serious threat next year in A Grade. All 4 sides can win this year, but you'd have to have either OT or OB due to double chance and the week off.

Pretty spot of Footy Gods.

You have to like the teams with the double chance.

Im going with OMs to knock off Skevs

Trinity to beat OB

Then OB to beat OMs.

Should be a fascinating finals series!

For what its worth I wrote a little piece a few weeks back about how even the comp was etc. That view has changed. In my opinion the GF will be won by OT who have clearly been the best side all season. They have lost 3 games, one to each of the finalists on their home grounds. Their biggest loss was by 4 goals to OB on a windy day. Seriously if anyone else had this form in any other section it would be shut the gate.
The other 3 sides are very even and it will be a cracking finals series to see who joins OT in Premier Section. If OT dont take it out they should be very disappointed.

OT clearly the best side all season?, I guess they're on top for a reason.
A very consistent quality team, will be in A Grade next year, but still think its anyones flag.
OB have the potential fire power to demolish sides, with 4 players in the Top 10 goal scorers this season
(OB: D.Anthony, T.Mentiplay, M.Karayannis, M.Dewar OM: A.Armstrong, OT: A.Ramsden)
It should be a cracking game on Saturday, with OT favoured by the bigger ground.

Predictions for this weekends games?
OT vs OB
OM vs SKOB

Confirmed on several fronts.

Edit:

Having said that, we've got the WRFL CEO trumpeting to all and sundry that Werribee are coming across, and I've just read in today's local rag that Werribee will crack the shits and stay in VAFA if they are not put straight into WRFL Div1. WRFL are not giving that commitment and will announce the divisions after this years finals are over.

Interesting times.

With the WRFL hell bent on getting the third division up, and need the two under 18's sides to bolster their feeble competition, I think you will find the WRFL accommodating to their demands.

The WRFL have been chasing the western based clubs for years, they aren't going to put a roadblock in front of the biggest club when they are a chance to go across.

Well done to OM's, dead eye dicks when it came to kicking with the cyclone that always destroys football at EP in September. Having said that, I think OT's deserve to win next week, they have been terrific all year along with The Tonners, who hopefully will keep their list together and add a few for a real crack at A Section.
As far as SKOB goes, until they recruit a 198cm ruckman, a FF, a CHF and CHB they will just be making up the numbers in B.

For once I agree with bs. When are the knuckle headed administrators of this competition going to see the elephant in the room that comes around each finals time being the windswept wasteland that is ep? Imagine a final at Victoria park or one of the other great suburban grounds in the vfl. You'd get better crowds and a much higher standard of football. Well done to Brighton, thoroughly outplayed trinity

Try playing at Casey Fields, makes EP appear like Etihad with the roof closed.

I managed to get down to HQ sat & sun to see both matches, and apart from that usual crappy wind, it was a perfect weekend for finals football.

I was impressed with Old Brighton, they came out firing and beat up on a very good side. I've seen a handful of Trinity games, and the level headed polished outfit really got sucked into OB's aggression and game style. Quarter time's minor scrap were signs that OT had taken the bait, and it fell apart from there. I suggest OT don't fall for this again and they focus on their brand of footy, or dare I say it, it might be straight sets out. Old Brighton tackled hard, got numbers around the contest, and restricted the run of OT that usually generates across the half back line. OB's coaching staff need a pat on the back for the game structure they went in with.

SKOBS did it again, they keep failing to fire in finals. To OM's credit, they were very sharp in front of goals, and seemed to be missing a couple of key players also. SKOBs have a great structure, great players and they seem to be fit, but they need to work on converting this into the big games. Hopefully they keep their list, with no holiday wonderers, and come back stronger next year.

OM vs OT will be a very tight game, I can't wait to get down there and see these two sides crack in with A grade and grand final on the line. With the expected HQ winds, OT sharp kicking and run will be the key. I don't think I've seen a better run a spread team in VAFA, they just need to get the right players free to allow this though. But OM's game structure can lock OT down, and they are very good in front of goals. This will go down to the final minutes. OT by a goal

Beaumaris are a great story for the Ammos and one of the few successful ones. Alas South Melbourne Districts once a strong and feared club in the old South East Suburban League has been mediocre for all bar for two successful seasons in D4 & D3 when it first joined the competition. Bentleigh left and are now thriving with juniors coming out of their ears, and premierships beckoning before sizeable crowds and some very exciting local derby’s. The genesis of Bentleigh’s success occurred in the years when they were in the Ammos where they developed a junior program which took 6-8 years to develop and has now borne fruit for them. They owe a debt of gratitude to the VAFA and should be more respectful.

Not surprised by the defection of Werribee Districts. They were fighting a losing battle as local clubs picked off their best players. Now they will be able to compete on an equal footing in the WRFL.

Then we have Point Cook which will be the next target of the WRFL. The once powerful Old Westbourne has just ended a season in Div 3 where they were winless and ended with a percentage of 32%.They now face life in Div 4 with some leisurely trips to Mt Lilydale, Springvale and Manningham. At least they can look forward to a local derby against Point Cook. I wonder if both teams will compare notes about the travel they face when they have an ale after the game.

The VAFA has to accept that they will picked off by rival associations. Suburban clubs are just an after thought to the Ammos and have always been. I would not expect the Board to spend much time and energy with clubs that have two or three teams and no juniors i.e Glen Eira. Clubs which are prepared to invest time and resources into developing a plan for the future will eventually succeed. It is not upto the Board of the VAFA to do the work for them.

These suburban clubs work out that spending 10 years to try and climb to the top is pointless when the fall down the ladder is just as quick once they lose players or their junior programs falter. They then fall into the trap of wanting immediate success and try to buy their way to a flag like Deer Park are doing at the moment in the WRFL. Where will the likes of Deer Park be in 5 years time?

The Premier Division clubs have benefactors in private schools and can rely on a steady supply of players to come through, but it is getting harder as soccer starts to compete with the traditional Aussie rules dominance and the demographics of suburbs change.

If Uni Blues are able to keep a majority of their list together, they will absolutely smash B section. They were highly competitive in A, and a little unlucky to be relegated. Young is the best player in the comp, so if they keep him and Summers, they will be a real force. Straight back up in 2015.

They wont keep Young he was almost at Blacks this year and now with the drop he will be a Blacksman round 1 next year (easily the best player in the comp!), Uni Blues struggled until F.Watts pulled on the boots and almost single handed dragged them too a few wins, with him and Young not playing, Summers, J.Watts, coming to the end and Nash likely to go elsewhere (just because thats the kind of bloke he is!!), plus didn't seem to have may good 19's coming through with prem 19's getting relegated. They may not go back up as quickly as everyone thinks

Young is absolutely no chance of being at the Blacks next year. I'm not sure I can recall a big name player that has jumped from blues to blacks or vica verca. Jack Watts and Summers aren't exactly coming to an end in my book. Summers is 28 and Jack is around 26. It will be interesting to see what the club is really made of.

Silly post, they couldn't even beat last years B runners up, in fact they were absolutely smashed by them 3 weeks ago. Re Fergus Watts, I'm sure that after his amazing as well as truly unbelievable act of not receiving a cent for all of the hot summer pre-season nights, early morning training session, planning, recruiting and coaching duties, I doubt that his crooked old body can go around again, for free anyway ;)

I think you'll find that F.Watts may go around again if the body survived okay, but it wont be at Uni Blues, and when he goes, he is rumoured to be taking one or two with him.

Uni Blues just had a year that they could not afford to have, and will likely struggle over the next few years.
