Not a problem in the 3 games I've seen. If the players made as few blues as the officiators it would be outstanding footy.

I'm not sure it's reasonable to have to put-up with boundary umps who can't consistently elevate the ball and get sufficient depth for the ruckmen to have a fair shot at it. Yesterday there even a number of call backs. Or field umps making calls from front-on. Or goal umps making line calls from front-on.

Last time I looked the VAFA was devoting something like 65% of its revenue to umpiring - a large slice of which comes from the significant affiliation fees.

The umps have more staff and better facilities than ever before. The standard should be improving markedly as I see it.

I've heard it right across the board

Saw an umpire on the weekend, after call for a ball up, then allow advantage for one team to play on. Finally called it back.

Comical, but as there have been 12 senior list (A & B grade) umpires not return in 2016, it is of a big concern.

Old Haileybury aren't getting enough credit on here for mine, they pushed beauy all the way at banksia without their captain and valenti and have won all of their other games. Once valenti comes back at the half way mark of the season they will be an even tougher proposition and should be right in the mix for top 4 come the end of the season.

Recruiting umpires must be very difficult and retaining them even harder ... if you think the standard is that bad, sign up with them and have a crack yourself ... if you are too old / slow / or just unfit to run then hace ago at goal umpiring..

remember though fron what I understand as a goal ump the max you can get per game is something like $80ish per week take out petrol to travel all over Melbourne, getting to amd from training and also im pretty sure umpires hace to pay for the uniform ... add it all up and they done actually get that much...

im not saying the standard doesn't need to rise im just saying that even though 65% goes tp umpiring.. spread across the VAFA its not that much ...

I would have to agree with TheArmy above. I have never umpired before and I cannot imagine how hard a job it must be on a weekly basis. As clubs, yes we pay our subscription fees but lets be grateful that we do get professional outfits turning up to our matches. I think the umpiring bashing is unwarranted and does not help any situation.
I as an avid club supporter hope that my team does well every week and wins, and a lot of the time, blaming the umpire for our own teams inefficiencies is the easiest option.

Lets remember this fact. These guys/girls train two nights a week, most likely are subject to high scrutiny on the field on match day and then with their umpiring coaches during the week, lets not bag them further online.

In terms of "umpiring standards dropping right across the board" that is absolute nonsense.
I have it on very good word that they have at least three current ex-vfl senior umpires running around on the weekend with many more on the pathway programs toward the development academies. So lets cut this dribble out once and for all

I understand where you're coming from in a sense but it's a bit like the old "if you haven't suited-up to play AFL football you aren't qualified to comment on it" palaver.

Recruiting officials isn't easy but it doesn't follow that we should not be entitled to offer an opinion if we see a falling-off in standards. An objective falling-off like a boundary ump who couldn't regularly get depth and height at throw-ins to the point there were regular call backs. This is Prem 'B' we are talking about, not the lowest division.

In fairness, there have been quite a few retirements of quality umps in recent years.

I wouldn't have made the post had it not been a topic of discussion more generally.

Anyway, it's a topic more suited to the umpires thread. So back to the teams.

I dont care if you bag the umps or not... as log as its not over the top and is not that bad hat it droves them away and or makes the VAFA look bad.. I couldn't care less... atmosphere makes footy great and passion creates that... if it is true as Max says that they have lost some senior umps then im sure the standard will improve as time goes on.. but just like my club is atm when you loose top end talent it takes time for the younger ones to step up..

but hey as you said.. back to the footy !!!!

Very good team effort from Monash today. Big men were dominant and some great clearance play as well. Set it up kicking against the wind in the 2nd term.

Not surprised by any of the results but some of the margins were interesting.

It happened a couple of years ago when Uni Blues and Carey dropped to B, only for both to go straight back up again (first time in about 20-30 years that had occurred from memory). Looks like we may get the same again this season. OS and Beauy come down and both to go straight back up.

Probably if Schneider and Milne go the distance for the year. All be it I dont think Schneider has played a game yet?

Liked the look of your full fwd number 1. Couldnt remember him from C grade last year. Looked a real handful for our defenders.
And the fat bloke wearing no29 just got given too much space. Clever footballer.

Can anyone see the ladder changing too much ?
I think the top 3 stay top 3 come round 18. Will back Scotch in to finish top, then Beauy, then St Bedes.
Haileybury, Ajax and Monash fighting for 4th in my opinion.
Hampton will drop. Can see Brighton winning enough at Beach Rd to stay, leaving Parky and Fitzroy in a battle to stay in B.

Yes I agree with both your points AL. Young forward come to us from the bush this year. Big Maddy can play.

You've picked up a couple too. Number 68? red head looks a strong forward and should go well with Harrison.

Not much in your twos though at the moment??

judging by his round 1 efforts I can't help thinking they would be better off without Milne. Get 20 games into a young kid who might play 10 years. They'll still go up and will be better set to stay up for a couple of years.

Why would you worry about what they are doing, have a crack at SKOBS and Xavs

Have to disagree with that statement Les, from my opinion beauy have two or three of young small forwards they are already getting games into. Let's not forget Milne stats in the big time are remarkable for a small forward. The knowledge and confidence he distills in those around him is immense. In fact, he personally knows some of those youngsters he is playing alongside. He has a vested interest in the club and I would have no doubt have a helping in the development of the youth coming through at Beauy. Yes they could go up without him, but I think learning off him and having him around will make Beauy better off in the long term. Just an opinion

Don't understand that comment re: Milne. Hasn't he kicked 4 or 5 the last few weeks??
They are on top of the ladder undefeated, he is playing well, you'd be a idiot not to play him.
