Good luck to De La in ‘23, watched them late in the Season and they certainly put in, Uni Blacks were easily the best side in B Grade this year, although 2nd all season Beaumaris weren’t settled coming in to the Finals and when Haileybury got all their VFL players back no contest, does anyone think VAFA might go to one promotion/relegation per division a season one day ?
Couldn’t agree more with 1 up, 1 down. How is going up a division after losing a grand final attractive in anyones book.

People will argue it’s a reward for the season despite no silverware however I tend to disagree - focus is picking yourself off the canvas.

Uni Blacks were clearly the best team this year. They were defeated by the worst conditions seen in many years.

Should always be two up and two down.

It depends on how much you lost the gf by, if you lose by a few points then you deserve to go up and have a go at the next level. If you lose by a country mile then you wouldn’t want to go up, however; that can determine what type of club you are. Crack in and don’t give up each game you earn respect by those that you play against.

I'm probably an outlier here and the 2 up, 2 down is part of the fabric of the VAFA but personally I hate it. I prefer the idea of earning promotion by winning a flag and don’t see any reward in having to compete in a higher grade after coming second. It also works the other way with relegation. A few years back (2013?) Uni Blues won 7 games and lost several others by less than a kick. For much of the season they were only a game or two out of finals contention. Yet they finished 9th got relegated and then absolutely waltzed through B grade the next season on the way to a premiership. They were clearly an A grade team who were a cut above the rest, which made the competition a bit of a farce.

I know most others in VAFA circles have a contrary view and that’s fine but I’m not a fan. Maybe 2 up 2 down in the divisions to encourage movement through the grades but perhaps consider Premier A-C 1 up and 1 down. Just my view.

Agree completely, some Clubs need more than 1 Season to adjust to B Grade and then A Grade is super competitive and wouldn’t it just give some stability to the overall Competition

The two up and 2 down system is what differentiates the VAFA from all other comps. It promotes continuous movement within the grades. I think the discussion is only looking at it from a promotion point of view but what about the other way.

Too many times you see teams in the other comps languish in a grade due to the fact that each year there is always one other team worse than them. How is a team winning 2 or 3 games for 6 or 7 years remain in the highest grade good for the comp?? I reckon East Ringwood won 3 games a year for about 6 years in a row and remained in the Premier Division all that time. Them remaining in Premier doesn't serve the competition, or East Ringwood for that matter, in any way. Sure, you are going to have the odd occurrence that JJ lists above, but its rare.

The VAFA system enables teams to rise through the grades faster than any competition. It also allows teams to go back, refresh and reload.

I think that this is what makes the comp so great.

And the no drinking…

Makes a mockery out of the system when the second bottom team wins 4 or five games and are still relegated.
I think that is what makes the comp great.

I recall one year where with 2 games to go we were in contention for the finals as well as relegation. Made for an exciting end to the season.

I don't mean to be flippant here but 5 wins means you lost 13 games. Probably deserved to be relegated.

And I noticed that Old Geelong has it's back to school match at Geelong College in Newtown this coming season, hosting St. Bernards. I guess it's not that hard to get from Essendon to Geelong as opposed to the other side of the West Gate!
Teams from the 'other' side of the WestGate have no problems travelling to the 'other' side of the same bridge.

PEGS, St Snowdogs, TherryPenola, Westbourne, and Williamstown CYs are comfortable within the VAFA family, although travel has been bequeathed upon the anointed.

Football clubs apply for membership into the VAFA acknowledging: -
  • They will become a member of a well-run and disciplined organisation, and
  • Travel is a given.

100% well said

Well run and disciplined, from the recent posts that is not the opinion of most people. Rabel and have no idea comes to mind.

FWIW correct it makes the season a lot more interesting with 2 up and down. Other leagues have dead rubbers from half way through the season when the bottom side is hopeless.
