More bad news for Hampton which is sad. The strength of the junior club was always your greatest asset.
Uncle Mick, can you shed any light on whats happening there at the moment? I am not having a crack at the club in any shape or form but it is quite surprising considering Hampton were a club on the up just a couple of years ago.
A raft of player departures, now the U/17's folding.....it all seems to be going wrong and in such a short space of time?

Not a great result for the club, but this is the problem we've been faced with for countless years. We have a strong junior program, but unfortunately a lot of them are Haileybury & Brighton Grammar school boys who inevitably are forced to play school footy ahead of their club - and quite often end up playing for the old boy school teams. Once they get to the U/17 age group is where it truly becomes a problem. We're still as strong as ever in the junior grades, we're just finding it tough to get that transition to U/17-U/19 footy. Occasionally, we have some success as evidenced in a couple of U/19 premierships in the past 10-15 years, but predominantly we lose out to the schools. At the end of the day, we've still been able to produce enough talent to be a competitive outfit.
The past couple of seasons however, have seen an unprecented shift in player numbers. Whilst from the outside it may look a certain way, the fact is the majority of them have gone for offers of $500+ a week upwards to $1,200. For the early-mid 20's in this day & age where we've seen an inflated cost of living that hasn't been reflected in average wage increases means money more than ever is at a premium. If you can get it for doing something you love, then why not? The club has been proactive in making necessary changes within and I believe we're on the right path. Time will tell.
Back to the U/17s situation. We had 2 teams with 13-14 players. It made sense to combine them and have an U/19 side at the expense of an U/17 team. Currently only 2 players from the combined squads won't continue. 1 being an U/17 player who works Saturdays and therefore can't play in the U/19s.

Funny old day @ The Barnyard with no less than 7 posters (2 to OC, and a whopping 5 to the Vultures). Can't say it was of the highest standard, but the defensive pressure of Parkdale stymied our efforts to make it a shoot out. Despite leading comfortably at halftime, OC got too conservative with the footy and Parkdale pounced, slowly reeling it back to 10 points at the final change. Down to 17 men (seemed a pretty innocuous incident to us), the Vultures rise to the occasion and probably deserved to pinch it given the last 15 minutes was played almost exclusively in their forward half.

Still the best team won.....;)

The VAFA Live Scores tell us that OC won by a goal. The VAFA website tells us that there was a draw between OC and Parkdale. What the hell is the result?
The Ammos have to get the scores right. This is crap.

Scribe - who played well for vultures?

All 'homegrowners' for mine Derm!

Hampton, Tobin and Platt were very good. Still Mitch Grant did prove a handful when he moved from floating across halfback and became a far more dangerous forward option. Only kicked one but played a part in a couple more.

To quote a much missed BF veteran, never write off the Vultures.

Roys apparently snuck home by a couple of goals over Marcellin, after scores were locked at 3/4 time.

They did indeed. Were well served by some old timers (apologies to Clarky and Jimmy O) and new boys Luke Ablett and Josh Vansittart. great to see big Ross Borland stand up when the game was on the line too.

Marcellin were pretty impressive today too, by the way. Bloody tall up forward. Tough to match up on.

Those old timers (John & Jim) of which you speak Anthony are clearly Fitzroy Fossils aren't they? You and I should know how that feels. :D

Haha, you're not wrong frase. Haven't kicked a ball in anger for six years but I still wake up on a Sunday feeling like I've played the game!

Hi Rissoles, have not seen you at the Barn Yard lately. You must be a
bit short of a Red. Got some good stock in at the moment.

The actual result was a draw. The problem is the Iphone App the VAFA
have had developed for the online scoring. To say the least it is garbage.
The scorer brushed his Iphone & a goal was added. This happened late in the quarter & after time had concluded he was not able to correct the result.

Apparently the App also does not last a full quarter & the phone operator has to keep logging in everytime they want to use. I'd say a case of not doing enough testing before rolling out the App.

Luke Ablett won the game for Fitzroy when Marcellin appeared to be in control. First he kicked an inside out torp from under the pack for a 30 metre goal then, next bounce, he roved the tap and drilled a 45 metre lace out pass to the full forward.
You cannot buy class like that!!

"Tobin" a homegrowner ? i believe he was a superstar recruit from St Bedes Mentone??

Gidday BTB, I trust the beard is not obstructing the view of your bow tie.
I've been spending time increasing my cellar so I've got plenty of reds atm.
And will be relocating south shortly so the frequency of future visits to the Barnyard may become limited.
Thanks for the explanation.
Knowing who's behind the redtext livescore system, it does not surprise me that it doesn't work properly. You should give him some 'constructive' feedback next time he's at the Barnyard.
All the best and keep that place in order.

Ahh, The Fly, fancy something he is involved in to working properly, amazing....
RedTXT is actually cool, although the fact that the iPhone app doesn't properly work is neither here nor there, or that's what The Fly says anyway.
