Certainly not treating a great VAFA man like Bedders as stupid. He has forgotten more about VAFA footy then I will ever know. However clearly you are if you believe the SFNL promotes a level playing field.

And to suggest that some APS schools don’t promote their brand through sports is just as idiotic. Most are not be seduced by it by it but plenty are. Unfortunately not everyone is born with a silver spoon and find it a struggle even to send their kids to “run of the mill” schools like De La Salle and Salesian. Despite the run of the mill tag it doesn’t seem to stop these elite types picking them and kids from the public system off with offers of scholarships.

Have only ever heard my old school described as run of the mill by one other VAFA poster. My most humble apologies if I have this wrong but is the timing of your arrival here and the threatened departure of that poster more than just pure coincidence?
Mate, how would I know what school you belong too? What's that got to do with anything? What's silver spoons got to do with anything? Did you grow up as the poor cousin? You are very selective with your comments.
The basis of my discussion with the other poster was that kids should go to school during the week, not be playing football matches.
And you really can't tell me a person bases where their kid goes to school on whether they have a good football team? What a load of cods wallop.
If so I made a bloody terrible choice sending my kids to Camberwell Grammar, God help them.

A competition in which success is measured by the size of your cheque book is hardly an "even playing field".
Bit of an unfair put-down there Rooster.

No question it's an inferior competition to the V.A.F.A in lots of respects and I'd suggest many connected with the S.N.F.N.L would not dispute that.

However, under Wayne Holdsworth and Garry Cranny and with guidance from AFLVic that competition has gone from a basket case 10 years ago to a well-run viable entity today.

They've held on to all their clubs, got Bentleigh back and have added Hallam, Carrum Patterson Lakes, Endeavour Hills, Port Melbourne Colts and one other I can't readily recall.

Oakleigh were considering jumping ship this year according to Bedders contacts and one other V.A.F.A club considered returning to the fold as well it was rumoured.

The chatter has been that the S.N.F.N.L CEO was one of those whose name came to attention in early conversations with head hunters tasked with finding a new V.A.F.A CEO. An indication the comp is well administered in their view.

As I said, it's not in the same street as the V.A.F.A. Neither is it a football minnow and deserves credit for reinventing itself.

They are going to have some magnificent facilities at Linton Street as part of the St Kilda redevelopment too I understand.

Meanwhile, the erstwhile VAFA competition hangs its hat on a derelict ground and facility at HQ that it now shares with a member club. Outrageous, the outgoing CEO should hang his head in shame.

They could do worse than employing Phil Cramer as their new CEO, the things he did at Old Camberwell were amazing.

I believe that CEO is on a mission to take over the southern world. Oakleigh have been amazing this year, good on them.

Old Melburnians had to have their own venue, after the Junction Oval was removed from them. Not a lot of ready alternatives.

Elsternwick Park's future is up to the community..of which the VAFA plays it's part.

If the rumours are true, then there will be upgrades. Elsternwick itself will get new rooms and an upgraded ground. A third ground, at the bottom end of the park area maybe key to Old Melburnians using the venue. Do that, and then the EP surface, lighting and scoreboard..and both the admin and umpires rooms, will be upgraded.

To be honest I actually agree with you. The SFL has improved significantly in recent years and for that they deserve some credit. There are new clubs touted to be joining and in time the points and salary cap (if managed properly) should further enhance the comp.

However they still have a long way to go. The take up by clubs of U19s is still poor and until they get that right the VAFA will still be the destination comp for kids coming out of juniors. In my view it should be compulsory, at least for Div. 1 clubs, to have U19s but many still don’t. Can you imagine any Premier VAFA club not having unders?

They have a glut of underperforming clubs in the Dandenong area mired in the bottom grade while they allow entry for news clubs from that same patch. At least two cannot field reserves and will be lucky to survive into next year. East Brighton have been a strong club for years but shortly after they won a flag the money ran out and then so did the players. And not that long ago the coach of one club used his own hard earned to back roll several premierships. Interestingly after a fruitless stint elsewhere he is back at that club and using the same model.

But yes I would agree that the SFL is a significantly better comp than it was 5 years ago.

You really think I would go to the hassle of a new username, setting up emails to tell you that De La Salle is a run of the mill school?

Please, believe it or not I don't go to bed thinking about you or De La Salle College.

Back to my self imposed ban from the lunatics and this asylum.

Might be better run, but the standard is terrible.

Phil Cramer can stay valuing properties please, not needed.

I know it's not you. Has been reported.

Fair enough and point taken. My clumsy suggestion did come with something of a rider and the penny is now starting to drop. You must admit it is eerily coincidental!

All good, any whispers on the new CEO? Last question before I leave again.
C'mon me ol' mucker, cut the Nellie Melba stuff. We all know BF gives real meaning to your life and that Canada would be grief stricken if you left the asylum you played an integral part in creating.

The goss is they've settled on who will lead the ship, just awaiting the imprimatur of the movers-n-shakers.

Tips Round 7

Well I thought 4 was pretty good last week and 2411 and I are neck in neck from our private comp which we started last week...

So for those interested here we go.

So as I said last week OGs are confused, they came into the year with huge hype and an AFL player and are a flop....they are looking forward to round 12 against Kew to notch up another win and will struggle against the rampaging Swans like Old Ivanhoe this week
Caulfield despite two serious injuries to key players last week will just get over the improving Marcellin at home
Old Mentone too good for Old Camberwell on the postage stamp At Keysborough
Haileybury
Despite so much riding on this weeks tips I'm tipping Kew at home to beat Willy in a close encounter . The man in the crowd will count down the last 10seconds and they will celebrate long and loud .

Cheers

I'm not sure, even if Beaser was there, that your last call will ring true.

I'm tipping an Old Haileybury v Marcellin matchup in the grand final at Sandringham this season, with OH being the premiers.

Your wisdom is rarely questioned. However, Marcellin after being smashed by 74 points Caulfield aren't even guaranteed of staying in C Grade, let alone playing off for the Grand Final

Have to agree with Max here. Caulfield were not too scruffy on the weekend. I think the Eagles had 1 goal to 3/4 time.
Would be shocked if Caulfield didn't get up to B this year. Very talented side.

Popped down for a look at Premier C at the weekend. The Willy V Kew game at Vic Park was pretty entertaining. Reasonable level of footy on a fast deck and a wind down the far end of the ground.

But for some small bloke from Willy acting like tarzan but playing like jane, the game was played in reasonable spirits.
