Well, my lions were just not that good on the weekend.

It seemed to me that our side had a down week after being up and about for the first four weeks of the season.

Hopefully from our end we can pick our bundle up and play well at home this week against Old Brighton in another tough game to get our season back on track.

There were a few surprises, but I can say I didn't see Bernies not kicking a goal in a half of football coming. It looks like the snowdogs are going to struggle to kick a winning score this season.

I also note that from the 25 games in A section, only 3 games have had a side kick over 100 points. Footy in A grade this year is quite contested and spirited, but there isn't a great deal out high scoring involved.

Is it just me or do the other "boffins" agree. I feel that the standard in A grade isnt what it used to be, Covid's interference?
Or am I dreaming?

Sam Tucker was a late call up for Richmond VFL this week and kicked 5 goals. By far his best haul at any level this year

Using this as an example the VAFA is better than the VFL, which of course it is not.

Good luck to Master Tucker, a great effort, another SKOB baby making his way in the world.

Whilst I’m here; the Collegians president made an interesting claim at the SKOB lunch a couple of weeks ago, telling those gathered that his team were the fittest in the comp.

Firstly, how can you make that statement? Secondly, they’ve been smashed in the last quarter in back to back games, which would suggest his aspersion is wide of the mark.

My point was that if your looking for a decline in standard then VFL is where that has happened. VFL is busted and stand alone teams been treated disgracefully.

I agree the standard is not what it has been in the past few years, but it is still great football to watch.

I believe Collegians are far fitter than they have been in the past few seasons, with a greater number of players completing full pre-season training than in 2019, 2020 and 2021. The malaise started in 2019 when many were just mentally spent after getting so close to winning grand finals in 2017 and 2018.

I dont think he meant it literally, it was more an indication that their fitness was right up there with anyone. I went to the Col v Xavs and to the contrary, they didnt stop running, they just didnt have the talent in the last 15 mins to capitalise
on any opportunities that came their way...

XavsAFL to win game Scotchies to win fights
Brahton over tiring wesleyAFL
UniAFL 45+ player points over CaulfieldAFL
Melbournians over OTs comfortably
SKOBAFL to keep Bernies under 35 points in a one sided affair.

Brighton to continue to press their claim as a contender
Uni to register 45+ player points and win easy
OTs to continue their annus horribilis
SKOB's super coaching panel scheme their way past the Bernies and take home the JOC cup.

Interesting to see if anything comes of the umpire being knocked down i n the 1st couple of minutes of the Collegians/OB game. He copped it right between the shoulder blades.

Assisted off the ground and not sure if he cam e back.

It also appeared that there were 3 field umpires running that game. That ground doesnt warrant 3 umpires (IMO).

Accidental glancing bump

Ump 'appears" to land safely in a "controlled" landing!

Player onus so will be interesting

Think Ump was trying to milk it just a little

My lions were simply just not good enough against a really good, well drilled and consistent Old Brighton outfit.

The highlight of the day for the boys in purple was the goal after the half time siren by Viv Michie, which capped off a terrific second term, however the remaining three quarters were dominated by Old Brighton.

The tonners are a terrific side headlined by Hill with able support all across the ground. Elliot Le Grice proved he is the best key defender in the competition by holding David Mirra to just one goal and little impact, although from my vantage point, Mirra was repeatedly held by his jumper by either his opponent or another player in the contest, however these free kicks went sight unseen by the umpires throughout the day.

Full credit to the tonners, they are an incredibly even side and their reserves smashed our reserves too.

Collegians will be looking forward to a trip across the Yarra River to Uni Oval to take on Blues next week. We have a good record of late against Blues away, so let's hope that streak continues, because we desperately need a win to keep in touch with the top 4 in what is shaping to be an incredibly even season this year.

Apparently accidental bump, ump briefly concussed, player onus will be interesting, you have no idea.

He came back later after being assessed and passing the appropriate concussion protocols. You don't "appear" and "milk" anything while being observed for suitability for Higher Things. That was a stupid and unworthy comment.

The highlight of the day for the boys in fluoro was me winning the aftermatch meat raffle in Umpires Appreciation Week. This Umpire Appreciates the kilos of top quality nosh from the Purples sponsor Peter Bouchier, the pork chops went down a treat for tea on Saturday night!
