Good stuff and extra brownie points for getting banned from the main board!!In my jubilation, I flipped a few birds at some rats over on the main board and got myself banned. Now that is out of my system, I figured I'd come back and have a read through these threads and post some thoughts.
I expected us to win the Grand Final. My reasoning wasn't particularly logical but I had never conceptualised a world where we finally break our Preliminary Final Hoodoo and then lose the following game (having won a PF, I now know that the next game is a Grand Final, some people refer to it as The Big Dance, weird). So aside from the fact that we don't have a history of heart breaking Grand Final defeats there were probably a few other elements that had a spring in my step pre game:
- we keep beating Sydney
- we keep winning at the G
- our form was red hot
- dropping a few games on the back of personnel issues was the only difference between 7th and 1st, with the bye rectifying that issue ultimately.
We were harder at the contest. More effective around it. To borrow a few phrases from the BMAC era we were "stronger for longer" and when the Swans pushed back, we "hung in there." The phone box, we owned it. The TARDIS, we owned it. The scoreboard, we owned it. Straight kicking early was a huge factor. Who'd have thought that this team would nail goals from everywhere early in the Grand Final when we've pissed away so many chances over the years.
The scoreboard and style of footy suggests a tight, hard fought contest, which it was. Did it really look like going other way to me though? Nope. We would not be denied. It was a nice culmination of the greatest month of footy any Club has ever dished up. Winning three trophies in the manner we did is going to be difficult to argue against.
The scenes pre and post game were glorious. Absolutely glorious. If we were to win the next three flags, I can't see how anything could compare. It was pure jubilation. I hit my peak up in West Sydney as that was the more dramatic, emotionally charged contest for me I hate what GWS represent almost as much as I love the Scray, it was a perfect storm. Sydney are worthy foes, I respect them and their fans (even the sooks online).
We were by far the best 7th placed team in the history of the game. People are ignoring the context of the season when they all about the ladder and were writing us off in the finals based on us finishing 7th and not being worthy as a result. It should have been another "what if" moment for us, after the season we've had, to manfully earn what would have been in any other year a top 4 spot and a clear path to Glory, to be the winningest 7th placed team in history would've sucked. But we did it anyway. We knocked over the form team. We played an all time great, we snapped the neck of a predetermined powerhouse and then stared down the only team that could match us physically at the contest, the minor premiers nonetheless.
And then a Flag Wagged.
