A bit more on the incident.

Ahead of the 2024 season, the MCG underwent major security upgrades with the installation of AI-powered scanners.

Previously, fans would wait in line for someone with a metal detector to check each individual.

The new technology streamlined that process, screening fans as they walked through entry gates.

Evolv Technology, the company behind the equipment, said it used "sensors combined with AI to differentiate between weapons and common metals people carry."

It has been used across a number of stadiums and arenas for major sporting events across the world including the NFL and NBA in the United States.

Mr Issko said fans would be understanding if security measures needed to change ahead of Saturday's clash between Richmond and the Brisbane Lions.

"We know security is needed and if they have to make a change until they work out what's happened, I think fans will accommodate that," he said.

This is my assumption. Any time my wife comes to the footy, her bag barely gets checked. You could easily hide something at the bottom of the bag.
I often have a backpack especially if coming from elsewhere. So often its just quick lift the jumper on top, no big obvious bottles or cans, then move on. Same with the metal detector scan, its more performative than thorough at either the MCG or Marvel

ABC news just mentioned:
The security system worked (AI/scanners/face recognition whatever the system is) and referred them to a manual check.
Apparently human error was the problem

Now what is human error.
Are they just going through the motions which is a possibility.
Did they just check the bags and got passed the body scanner check.
I don't know the MCG system on those two arears as i was not pulled up the in 2 Grand Finals i attended.

But The Gabba body scan is random and i must confess i try to avoid it by just not making eye contact. Has worked so far.
It's quite possible that given the AI system there is still in its infancy (I think it's been up and running for about a year), they have a pretty low threshold for what gets referred for a manual check, ie being conservative/risk averse.

This means that the vast majority of cases referred for a manual check would be fine, ie false positives.

Thus is would be easy for the people in charge of the system and/or doing the manual checks to get a bit complacent. That doesn't justify it of course, but that would be the thought process of the people involved I imagine.

I guess another possibility is that one of more of the security staff were in on some plot with the accused, and simply waved them through in violation of the process.

We treat the Tiges with footy insouciance, we are doomed.

I'm home in Thailand.

The Lions play at 12:15 - HOW TIDY IS THAT FOR FOOTY? :D

I remain committed - the Lions, undefeated through the season......not JUST the home and away, the SEASON.

B2B, undefeated. AFAIK, never been done.

Love youse, peace :)

ลุยกันเลย Brisbane Lions!

I'm very much allowed to have rant all is good now can't wait to see the boys play tomorrow

yes your very entitled to have a rant, thats what these chat rooms are about. In fact as members and supporters I suspect we all have wanted to have a rant at some stage.

mine would be for those members during Covid that had paid a full membership for the Gabba, good seats say around $1000 for the year. We were give an option by the AFL, a refund or effectively donate your season membership money to your club. I pay for 3 tickets each year and chose to donate the $ to the club.

No thanks, no recognition, nothing on-flowing into the next year, no personal letter/email.

Yep we can all bitch and complain, I just guess in which forum and when we choose to do it.

My chips were under seasoned at the last home game, which upset me. No apology given.
My rants…
I want to see pushes in the back paid as feee kicks.
I hate Collingwood.
I want an AFL administration committed to the well being of the game rather than money.
I want holding the man paid as a free kick.
I really hate Collingwood.
I want incorrect disposal paid.
I don’t care how many ball ups there are. Ruck contests are good.
Did I mention how much I hate Collingwood?

3d printed acrylic guns that work are a thing now - don't see how they can scan for those.

Looking forward to the time when Ithere are Ai dickhead scanners that work.

Obviously I do need to counter this unbridled optimism to some extent.

So far our results in 2025 have been the exact reverse of our results in 2024. If this persists it's going to be a long season. And not in a good way!

Tomorrow is a great chance to break that trend.
