"War Horse" Curnow Explains His System.
There is probably not a better-known footballer playing to-day than F. C. Curnow, North's champion ruck man, who is affectionately known as the "war horse." In his time he has played with four different league clubs, and is at presenet assisting to coach the red-and-whites.
Curnow first played football for the Moonta Club in the Yorke's Peninsula Association in 1904, but left a few years later for New Zealand. He played there for two years—1907 and 1908—and then returned to South Australia to live in Adelaide. He played for South Adelaide in 1909, and for Port Adelaide a year later. In that season Ports went top after having been beaten only twice. They also defeated the premier teams of Broken Hill, New South Wales, and Western Australia. Callinan, Congear, and himself formed the rucks in those days. From Port Adelaide Curnow went to Unley, and played for Sturts in 1912-13-14, and 1915, and then again moved, this time to settle permanently in North Adelaide. In his early days he played in the ruck and forward, but of recent years has been spelled in the half-back lines. He is one of the oldest men in the league still playing, but is still in the pink of condition, as his remarkable speed last Saturday proved.
