Premiership sides who drank their own bath water?

It was Gaff’s own fault he missed out. Agree that the Eagles deserved their win.

Regardless of who's fault it was, the rest of the team still had to step up to overcome it. Sheed was brilliant for the rest of 2018 filling that void, shame injuries after that limited what he could do.

2007 was cursed, Judd, Cousins and Kerr all injured before or during finals.

Would still lose to Geelong if fully fit, but would have been way more competitive than whatever that was from Port Adelaide.

The hawks definitely drank the bath water but Id argue the loss of their CHB (croad) without anyone to replace him who could play on the big KPFs and the loss of their no1 ruckman (campbell) created structural issues that they couldn't overcome until they acquired brian lake.
Not to mention injuries to Roughead and Franklin late in the year when they had to win to make finals.

Geelong 08 10 11

Actually throw in 2013-2021 as well

For a side claiming to be a dynasty side they're missing the premierships to back it up. Should have bettered the Lions and Hawks with a four-peat.... or even an Octo-peat.
08 we choked.

2010, Collingwood was just better.

Geelong in 13 big what if. Varcoe missed chance. Who knows what happens in extra time. I still fancy Hawks but had they beaten you I reckon they beat Freo despite losing at home in week 1.

Chappy BOG in the semi final but gets suspended.

Enright misses out, we bring in Josh Hunt and our defence look awful all night.

Hawkins stuffed back all year but we manage it terribly, and he can barely move for finals.

That one stung. I realise Hawthorn had more shots at goal etc but a fit and firing Geelong team that year >>>> than all the "missed opportunities" Cats teams 2014-2021. 2013 the team's ceiling was premiership quality, and I agree they'd have redeemed themselves for the QF blunder.

The eagles have been guilty of it each time they won the flag.

1993
1995
2007
2019

Those premiership defences were abysmal. Lost games they shouldn't have lost. Blew top 4 chances at home in their final games as well as top 2. 1995 was probably the worst of them all.

Bombers 94
Hawks 2009
Cats 2023

All Missed finals.

Who else?
2007? If by losing the 2008 GF, yes, but Cats lost one game before the 2008 GF after winning the 2007 GF. The rest I agree with. But you can then add Pies 2023

No I meant WCE not you guys. You guys didn't choke in 2008 or get cocky you lost to a better team on the day and one that was good all year. The Eagles in 2007 got ahead of themselves in my opinion. But also a lot of that was due to Ben cousins not being there.

hawks had 12 more shots. thats a smashing everywhere except the scoreboard. play the game again with your changes and cats likely lose by more cos the accuracy discrepancy is unlikely to repeat

So? Geelong had 9 more scoring shots in the '08 grand final, including 7 more at HT when the game should've been put to bed. When you score a goal instead of behind every event after changes anyway, as it's a centrebounce reset.

Enright was our best defender/rebounder (probably the best in the comp) while Chapman was still a Goliath in big games (like a better version of Burgoyne) who regularly destroyed Hawthorn. Josh Hunt came in and was a disaster in defence.

Hawkins was one of the very best forwards in the comp in 2012 but was absolutely cooked with the broken back at the end of 2013. Imagine him dominating that game like the 2012 classic.

Make the changes and Geelong win. Alas, when two sides are even, the fitter, fresher side usually wins. It was a lucky escape for Hawthorn in reality but everything they did after that for 2 years was close to flawless.

Well in 2008 hawks rushed 13 of those 12 extra scoring shots so .... there goes that argument.

I note that you disputed none of my points around the players in question for the 2013 game - or indeed that changing a scoring shot from a behind to a goal changes every event thereafter anyway. That is fine to act as a concession and settles our discussion. All teams get lucky at times. There's nothing wrong with admitting it.

I reckon there are more non-Premiership sides who drank their own bathwater, and therefore resulted in zero premierships, than premiership sides....
Collingwood 2025?

Collingwood 1990. End of story.
A team of battlers (Daicos aside) who managed to have all the cards fall for them in a year when other teams had off years or weren’t yet there (Hawks, Cats, Eagles).

It was pure hubris by the club for years afterwards - they always thought that 1990 was a genuine champion team that was just one top up away from reclaiming premiership glory. Look at all the bizarre recruiting (or attempted recruiting) of former stars that they thought would again give them the one missing piece - Barry Mitchell, Gerard Healy, Dermott Brereton, Richard Osborne, Adrian McAdam (!!!).

The biggest example of this mentality was appointing Shaw as coach. By 1999 they were wooden spooners and a laughing stock.

A veritable Roman Bath full of misguided and unearned hubris.

'A team of battlers who needed all the cards to fall their way to win a flag, and were wooden spooners 9 years later'?

I'm not sure you understand the concept of the thread...

Cant count 1992 Eagles when they come back and win again in 94? Seems unfair

2018 Eagles though. But oh boy. Litres of bathwater was drunk. Fell off an absolute cliff after glugging so harhard
They changed their club song when they sung it after they won the flag. Cocky as ****.

Yes, but it's probably fair to point out that Collingwood was in the business of poaching from other clubs for years beforehand as well.

That said, don't forget Brad Hardie ;)

No, I think Gordon Farkas got it right. They believed they were a lot better than they were, and sealed their own descent along the way.

And Woewodin and Scott Cummings. Hang on I'm not supposed to join in. Sounds like we were drinking every other clubs elderly players bathwater though

Scored a try for the Lions within minutes of coming on Saturday night which is a decent achievement at his age.
