Premiership Window

Look I know its still raw...but the club (and fans) need to come to the conclusion that not only is the season shot, but the signs are that our Premiership window is gone.

Here's why:

Our best players are (ages as at 1/1/2013):
Judd 29
Murphy 25
Carrots 29
Scotland 32
Simpson 28
Waite 29

That is the only group with any claim on top shelf quality at the moment. Worse is our 23 and under guys are virtually devoid of All Australian possibility.

Yarran
Gibbs
Kreuzer
Garlett
Henderson
Laidler

Ok they could be 'good players'. I don't see an All Australian in any of them unless Yarran and Gibbs can find a heart which seems increasingly unlikely. Kreuzer? He's 23 now. Never been anywhere near being in the best 50 players in the comp let alone All Australian.

Judd just looks a 'really good player' to me now. He seems a shadow of his former self. Carrots is frankly our best player now. He gets the ball, uses it well, shuts down his opponent every week. He's 29 too.

I think the scariest thing is we don't have a player (Yarran aside) who was born in the 90s who really looks to have a lot of ability. That means we don't have a gun (or possible gun) 18, 19,20, 21 or 22 year old in the side. That's frightening when you consider most of our better players are near 30.

These are the lost years. With a better coach and set up we should have been challenging for a flag in the last (including this year) three seasons. We keep convincing ourselves we are building. What rubbish. We convinced ourselves (I eventually fell for it but was wrong) that we are better off without Fev. What rubbish. Should have fixed that guy's head. Malthouse would have. Was a once in a generation player.

Point of all this? Club shouldn't bother going after guys like Cloke. Malthouse will realise that I hope. We need to start from scratch before we become the Bulldogs - so shit there's nothing to work with. Trade some older players for draft picks. Renew the list. Yes we've had coaching problems that should have done better but as we look forward we have far bigger problems.

To win a premiership you need All Australian players. Apart from Murphy we don't have one on the list capable of being one under near 30.

Stop. Pause. Lose the emotion. Think. Before the place becomes an uncompetitive rabble again.

Him being there doesn't necessitate a one dimensional forward line. That's game plan tactics and midfielders picking targets. Hawthorn isn't one dimensional just because Buddy is there.

I understand what you're saying, but just like ex-copper Alan Jeans had Dipper up against a wall and put the fear of God into him, don't you think Fevola may have been different if he was given tough love when he was a 21 year old ? It seems to me that Carlton were always way too soft on him.

I doubt he had psychological issues when he was 22.

When the coach is saying Waite is "our Franklin" you know the forward line is devoid of presence and potency. Fevola hasn't been convicted of a crime. Isn't in jail. He had a problem on the piss. And a big ego. Funny that we got rid of him because guys like Gibbs wouldn't tolerate him. He had heart Fev. He was a superstar. He would have stood up on a night like last night. Gibbs wouldn't carry his bags to the ground. I'd like to hear that other players don't want to play with Gibbs any more because he is spineless. A far worse crime than Fev ever committed. Get some ****ing perspective.

Was Fev more selfish than Yarran? Skirting the packs not putting his body on the line? Murph last night? Garlett? One arm in instead of body? Was Fev more selfish than Gibbs? Makes a lot of sense......

He was a one in a generation player he just played at a club that didn't know how to handle him... There's plenty of games over the last 3-4 years we would have won had he been in the team.

This is that year for us, in the preseason there will be much soul searching and most of the boys will come to the conclusion that this afl capper is really hard and it requires true mental fortitude.

This is baseless guff. Why are we fine? What facts do you have to support that view? We can't kick. Our key positions are a mess. Our better players are older. We are spineless front runners and have no resilience. WHY are we fine? Who said you have to have a year where everything goes wrong? Shane Rogers? Whats he done???? Fair point - am relying on the scuttlebutt at the time which said Murph Gibbs and Judd wanted him gone....HOWEVER...not one player came out and said "keep him, let's work through this". If they did internally they obviously have no impact or influence and never at any point has that leaked out of the biggest leaking organisation on Earth. They have no guts. Gibbs especially. Self satisfied smile. Done nothing. Happy for him to leave.

So you think a 20 y/o Gibbs could influence what happened to Fev? Or one of his mates in Judd would want him out?? Not even Sticks wanted him to go as he thought he could be fixed.

I would not be pointing a finger at any player.

The reason I say, steer away from the Fev stuff is because it's been done to death and we need to find a fix for our problems...

Carlton is a lot better off now than with Fevola. Windows, you are wrong on so many different levels. We have the potential to have one of the most dynamic forward line structures in the AFL. I guarantee you were not making these claims last year when we had Betts, Garlett, Walker and others continually bobbing up and kicking match winniing totals.

Carlton does not need the Coleman medalist to win a premiership. If I could find a site that gave a list of seasonal goal kickers for each season over the past decade that didn't include finals you would see how there is not much correlation between the Coleman medalist (and leading goal kickers) and team success. In fact, at least twice over the past decade the Coleman medalist has failed to make the finals altogether.

The team needs a healthy summer, a better forward coach who can capitalize on the dynamic nature offered by our smaller forwards and perhaps the introduction of one or two players. To put it down to the team needing a Brendan Fevola type forward is very short sighted given that our best success over the past decade came in a year when we had three players in the top eleven goal kickers. This year two of them, Garlett and Walker, had down years due to both injuries to themselves and the effect of injuries to other players.

We have so many more important holes to fill than relying on a Fevola type forward.
