True. But always looks weak in a contest. Want Brown to succeed but have serious doubts he will.
I see brown like a young Brian lake. Lake was big , good in a 1on1 but was found lacking when the ball went to ground . So lake worked very hard on his marking and used spoiling as a last resort so not to bring the ball to ground where his weakness was . If brown can work on reading the ball in flight and his marking he could avoid some of his deficiencies . Until then he will put himself and fellow defenders under pressure .

I don't get this. Brown routinely throws himself at the contest.

I think you mean he 'routinely' throws himself to the FLOOR during a contest. Has to be one of the softest yet physically capable players in the AFL. I don't see why he has to be so soft an play with no composure. He's a seasoned player now.

You would think it was his first game. Only his first game back in 2007 was actually awesome...

Hurn was never any good anyway, sure he kicks long but he only gets like 5 possessions a game, no tank no courage and no leadership. We're better off without him to be honest, Smith will be twice the player.

Tongue in cheek, of course!

Hi Folks... would appreciate any news on what time training session on Monday 6th is. Over in beautiful Perth 'til the 7th and will be my only chance to catch a training session. I'm pretty sure it is at McGillivray Oval.

the last one started at 7.30am at McG, then on to Kings Park and then somewhere indoors for gym work. I think the early start was due to 1. a long day of training and/or 2. it was quite hot that day.
Usually they start 9.30-10am but we may hear more nearer to 16th.

Thanks BT. Will keep an eye out for it although, the club website doesn't seem to provide training times generally, and front office doesn't re-open until 8.30am on the 6th.

We’ll be back next year with an open training session on Monday, January 6 at 9.30am, and we hope to see you all there for the first training run at UWA Sports Park (McGillivray Oval) for season 2014.

Thought this was the appropriate thread to post in so, happy new year everyone!
I hope 2014 brings us more success than 2013 did and thank you all for the incredibly fun football year! Brad Scott week, #returnthewings and Mod Monday are just some of the fantastic things that we have all experienced and I hope we can have another one. Bring on season 2014 and I wish that all of BigFooty enjoy their new year! Thanks everyone! :)
Go the Eagles!

have a bad feeling about Hurn going back to SA as a free agent

Wouldn't be the end of the world and I'd expect a first round pick as compensation. We could end up with picks 8 + 9 or 10 + 11 as Collingwood did last year and give us an opportunity to pick up two very good mids, 2014 is supposidly a good draft for talls so quality mids may well slide to 10 + 11.

If we lost Hurn this year and ended up with Sheed + Acers how upset would we be?

Better than trading with those scum at Port.

Yeah still pissed with Port, if Hurn goes it should be the Crows only and it will be a lotto with what compensation we get if 2013 is anything to go by.

Hard choice hurn or first rounder ! As much as a first rounder sounds nice its still speculative if they will end up as good as hurn . Would be pissed if the afl scrapped free agency compo and we lost Hurn .
If we lost hurn who would be our rebound kicker ? Smith , Wilson :)

Wilson is the closest type, he's solid body wise, medium to tall and has a big penetrating left foot kick.

Half back flankers are basically semi defensive running defenders / mid fielders these days and we have quite a few on our list:

Colledge
Wilson
Smith
Carter (smaller)
Yeo (taller but slight of build ATM)
Ellis
Rosa is an option, certainly doesn't skirk backing into packs.
Schofield if we use someone else at CHB (Barrass in 2015?)
Waters who I want across the HFF
Tunbridge is another bigger bodied option
Butler / Bennell / Brennan can also play the rebounding HBF role

But none have the leg of hurn , it's not his defensive skill we need to replace! Maybe we will be less reliant on hurn with Simpson as coach using precise kicking and marking to come out of defence . I want yeo in the midfield with his line breaking pace and Ellis on HFF or wing using his kicking skills inside 50 , so a decent replacement for hurn is not on our list. Apart from suckling and Trent McKenzie there are no comparison for hurns boot . It will be a very sort after attribute and we will need to pay top dollar for his next contract .

Sure Hurn's biggest asset is his kicking and there are very few who could match it but if he does take the option of free agency and make a move we do have plenty of options across half back.

Gaining an extra first rounder could be the difference in landing a trade for a player such as H Bennell or another well credential'd ex WA player or drafting in a couple of A grade mids. Teams can quickly rebuild with a couple of top 10 picks plus a low second rounder plus free agency.

All I'm saying is it wouldn't be a total disaster, losing a Darling or a MacKenzie would hurt more.
